NWS Paducah issues statement regarding high heat indicies this afternoon

Below is a special weather statement and the hazardous weather outlook for Southern Illinois.

…HEAT INDEX VALUES NEAR 100 DEGREES LIKELY THIS AFTERNOON…

High pressure aloft will bring another hot and humid day to the
region. Temperatures climbing into the lower half of the 90s this
afternoon will combine with high humidity levels to push heat
index values up to near the century mark. In fact, readings could
be up close to 100 degrees for several hours between noon and 5
or 6 PM.

Those working or playing outdoors today should make sure to have
plenty of water on hand. Stay hydrated and take frequent breaks
from outdoor activity. Prevent vehicle heat related deaths. Look
before you lock!

.DAY ONE…Today and Tonight

Heat indices will top out near 100 this afternoon.

A few isolated thunderstorms will also be possible today, mainly
during the heat of the afternoon. Lightning and brief heavy rain
would be the main thunderstorm hazard.

.DAYS TWO THROUGH SEVEN…Thursday through Tuesday

Scattered thunderstorms will be more likely on Thursday and then
again Sunday, at which time a few isolated severe storms cannot be
ruled out. Lightning, locally heavy rain, hail and damaging wind
gusts will be the main thunderstorm hazards. Otherwise, isolated
thunderstorms cannot be ruled out Friday and Saturday.
