  • Southern Illinois and Howard are meeting for the first time in men’s basketball.
  • Each of SIU’s first four opponents this year are playing SIU for the first time.
  • Howard beat UMASS on Friday night to improve to 4-0 on the season. The Bison are averaging 97.5 points per game.
  • Howard guard RJ Cole was named the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Preseason Player of the Year. Howard’s Charles Williams was also a preseason first-team All-Conference selection.
  • SIU junior guard Aaron Cook has scored in double figures all three games and is averaging 15 points per game.
  • Senior guard Marcus Bartley scored an SIU-high 20 points on 6-of-9 shooting against Arkansas Pine Bluff. Bartley is 8-for-15 from the 3-point line (53 percent) through three games.

  • SIU has done an exceptional job limiting the opposing team’s best player in each of the first three games.
    • Game 1 at No. 2 Kentucky: SIU held preseason All-American Reid Travis to six points
    • Game 2 vs. #25 Buffalo: C.J. Massinburg was coming off a 43-point game against No. 13 West Viriginia. SIU held him to 11 points and scoreless in the second half.
    • Game 3 vs. Pine Bluff: preseason SWAC Player of the Year Martaveous McKnight was coming off a 41-point game and was averaging 35 points per game. SIU held him to 11 points.
  • SIU held No. 25 Buffalo to 62 points, matching the best defensive performance against Buffalo in the last three seasons.
  • UB last scored fewer than 62 on March 1, 2016 (vs. Miami (OH) – 59 points). Buffalo averaged 85 points per game last season.


CAREER NIGHTS


  • Several SIU players had career nights in Saturday’s 78-48 win over Arkansas Pine Bluff.
    • Brendon Gooch earned his first career start and responded with career-highs of nine rebounds and four assists
    • Rudy Stradnieks set a career high with 12 points in only 14 minutes
    • Marcus Bartley set an SIU high with 20 points and six 3-pointers. His six 3-pointers are tied for the most by any player in the Hinson era
    • Freshman Darius Beane played in just his third career game but set high standards with eight rebounds (four offensive) and four assists in 29 minutes.
