John Robert Brayfield, 89, died peacefully at the Marion, IL VA Hospital on May 21, 2021.
He was an Air Force veteran who served in the Korean War as a member of the Air Rescue team.
John was born on October 23, 1931 in Sesser, IL to Winsor and Norma Fay (Hackney) Brayfield. He was one of six children who grew up on the family farm. Upon graduation from high school, he attended Southern Illinois University and Southeast Missouri University before graduating from University of Illinois with a bachelor’s degree in Agricultural Science. John spent his career as a coal miner for Consolidated Coal in Waltonville, IL and owned/operated Brayfield Electric.
In his free time, he enjoyed traveling and spending time with family. He is survived by his wife Jane Brayfield of Christopher, Illinois, and sons John Brayfield (Betsy) of Valier, Illinois and Rob Brayfield (Cathy) of Maineville, Ohio; brother Richard Brayfield of Sherman Illinois and sister Joyce Donaker of Mulkeytown Illinois, three grandchildren and four great grandchildren. There will be a Hero’s Welcome ceremony at the Marion VA Medical center followed by cremation with no services per his wishes.
