Steven Gale Dawson – Benton, IL

Steven Gale Dawson, 68, of Benton went to his Heavenly home on May 12, 2022. He was born in Christopher, IL on May 10, 1954 to Richard “Gale” Dawson and Betty (Pilson) Dawson. Steve was a member of Grace Awakening Church where he served as head trustee for many years.

He is survived by his loving, devoted wife of 25 years, Brenda (Jones), his children: Damian (Kelly) Dawson, Derek Dawson, Sara (Josh) Hilton and Amber Blythe, as well as his true loves, his grandchildren: Mayci Dawson, Cameron Dawson, Makenzie Dawson, Taylor Dawson and his “little buddy” Fletcher Blythe. Also surviving are his sister, Sharon (Brad) Pioveson, his favorite niece Michelle (Kai) Nuernberger, great niece and nephew, cousins, wonderful in-laws, and many, many friends. He was preceded in death by his grandparents, parents, and his life-long best friend, David “Shad” Shadowens.

Affectionately known as Pops, Poppy, Big Dog, Stevie Wonderful, and a slew of other names throughout the years, Steve was loved by all who knew him. He never met a stranger, which was sometimes unfortunate for the stranger since he was such a big talker. He was a teller of big stories, (mostly all true), which he would often repeat everytime he had a chance. His comic book knowledge could easily keep a conversation going for hours. If you weren’t interested in that, he’d gladly tell you all about the inner workings of a sewer plant or coal mine.

Steve loved the simple things in life; his church, his family, his dogs, super heroes, and a good margarita to name a few. He loved music and dancing, even though his moves resembled that of a long distance skier. His sweet tooth was unparalleled, and it was a common occurrence for him to order dessert before anyone else finished their meal. Despite his size, he really was just a fruity drink, baseball cap, and a movie-loving teddy bear. He never turned down the opportunity to see the latest “kick-ass flick” (his words, not ours) and stop in for a meatlovers Bonanza Quatro’s pizza.

Steve was a giver. He would literally give the shirt off his back or the last dollar in his wallet if he saw someone in need. He was a terrible handyman (not admittedly), but that never stopped him from showing up with tools when there was a project to be done. There was a giant heart in his big tough-guy exterior. The sacrifices he made for his family and friends did not go unnoticed, and we are positive he was met with a “Well done, thy good and faithful servant” upon his arrival at the pearly gates.
Funeral services will be held at 1:00 P.M. on Sunday, May 15th at the Grace Awakening Church with Rev. Ken Petty officiating. Visitation will be from 5:00 P.M. to 7:00 P.M. on Saturday at the church.

In lieu of flowers, Memorials may be made to the Family to assist with medical expenses.
