James L. Hudson — Benton, IL

Mr. James Lawrence Hudson, age 67, of Benton, passed away Monday, July 6, 2020 at his home.

Jim’s wishes are to be cremated, with no public services.

Cremation services are with the Leffler Funeral Home of Benton.

James Lawrence Hudson was born on July 16, 1952 in Christopher, IL; the son of Forrest C. Hudson and Helen J. (Hunt) Hudson.

He was a retired lineman with General Telephone and Electric.

Jim is survived by three grandchildren: Cheyenne Hudson, Casey J. Hudson, and Sydney Hudson; three great-grandchildren; and a half-brother Forrest S. Hudson; and his two close friends Connie Hogan and Gary Craig.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a son Forrest Hudson; and a brother Michael R. Hudson.

Deanna Renee Upton — West Frankfort, IL

Deanna Renee Upton, age 52, of West Frankfort, passed away at 12:00 noon, Monday, July 6, 2020 at her daughter’s home.

Deanna’s wishes are to be cremated. A private family service will be held at a future date.

Deanna Renee Upton was born on October 12, 1967 in New Mexico; the daughter of Ernest Gene Upton and Elizabeth Jean (Williamson) Upton.

She was a homemaker.

Deanna enjoyed going camping, spending time with her family, especially enjoying spending time with her grandchildren.

She is survivedher four children: Amber Mateycak and husband Keith of West Frankfort, Ashley Stinson and husband Jeremy of Colorado, Paul Parcell of Colorado, and Jeremy Upton of West Frankfort; eighteen grandchildren: Susan Plock and husband Thomas, Angela Mateycak, Keith Ray Mateycak, Nala Mateycak, Kalijah Mateycak, Nicholas Mateycak, Isaiah Cosby, Noah Stinson, Constance Stinson, Kaiah Stinson, Brooklyn Stinson, Issac Parcell, Jade Parcell, Miley Burdick, Ashlyn Upton, Landon Upton, Caitlyn Upton, and Hayden Upton; two great-grandchildren Pagann and Gracelyn; two brothers; and several nieces and nephews and their families.

She was preceded in death by her father Ernest Gene Upton, Sr., her mother Elizabeth Jean Coffey, and a brother.

Robin Lenard-Christopher, IL

Robin Lenard, 63, of Christopher, passed away on July 7, 2020 at her home.

She was born on February 19, 1957 in Christopher, IL to Robert Cook SR. and Betty (Tindall) Dial.

She is survived by her children Rebecca (Michael) Bourland of Christopher, IL, Christina (Kevin) Hulford of Spring Hill, TN and Robert Cook of Christopher, IL; grandchildren Ashley, Derek, Jenny, Nick, Syaria, Carissa, Billy, Mackenzie and Cameron; great grandchildren Cheyenne, Trinity, Blake, Justin, Sydney and Journey; one brother Carlos (Carrie) Dial of Christopher; one sister Tamela (Rick) Grammer of Christopher and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, and three brothers Delmar Tindall, Rocky Connor and John Connor.

Funeral services will be on Friday July 10, 2020 at 4:00 PM at the Gilbert Funeral Home in Christopher. Visitation will be on Friday from 2:00 PM until the time of the service at 4:00 PM.

Gary Dean Nave – Benton, IL

Gary Dean Nave, 84, of Benton, IL passed away Sunday morning July 5, 2020 at SSM Health Good Samaritan Hospital in Mt. Vernon.

Gary was born in Blackwell, Oklahoma on April 26, 1936, the son of Carl & Edna (Suenram) Nave.
Mr. Nave married Patricia Unger at St. Adrian’s Catholic Church in Chicago, Illinois on October 13, 1956.

Gary was a huge hunter and fisherman and he loved being in his boat.
Mr. Nave is survived by his wife of 63 years, Patricia Nave of Benton, children Monica Ryan, of Chicago, Michelle Caffero, of Chicago and Mary Nave-Wurtz, of Highland Park, IL; grandchildren Elizabeth Ryan, Joe Ryan, Matt Ryan, Nicole Caffero-Garcia, Rene Caffero and Sophia Nave-Quartararo and one great-grandchild, Angelina Del-Cid.

Mr. Nave was preceded in death by a son, James Dean Nave and by his parents.

Kent Alan Alsobrooks — Cumberland City, TN (formerly of Benton, IL)

Kent Alan Alsobrooks 59 of Cumberland City, TN, formerly of Benton, IL, died July 4,2020 at Skyline Medical Center in Nashville, TN.

He was born to George and Loretta (Summers) Alsobrooks on October 11, 1960. He lived a very colorful and interesting life.

Kent attended elementary and high schools in Benton, IL. He was valedictorian of the Class of 1978. That same year he and his best friend accepted a personal invitation to visit former President Richard Nixon at his home in San Clemente, CA.

During his younger life, Kent achieved many accomplishments. He became a member of the RLDS Church in 1968. He was a grade-school spelling bee champ, won numerous essay contests, and had the privilege of traveling to Honduras in the Open Door Exchange Program.

Kent had many interests and hobbies. He was a life-long St. Louis Cardinals fan. In recent years he became an avid country music fan. He belonged to several fan clubs and established personal acquaintances with a few of his favorite singers. He has a collection of photos with these country music stars. Kent also collected personally autographed photos of several movie and television personalities.
He was an entrepreneur. Over the years he was employed in sales, owned a lawn business, and worked in the family sign business.

Kent was preceded in death by his grandparents Humbert and Lilly Summers, Marshal and Irene Alsobrooks, his aunts Wanda Summers, Lola Kearney, and Sue Kupiec, and uncles Harold Summers, Glenn Summers and Lloyd Alsobrooks. He is survived by his parents, sister Gayla (Dana) Hill of Christopher, an aunt and many nieces, nephews, and cousins.

Visitation will be at Morton and Johnston Funeral Home in Benton from 5:00 – 8:00 pm on Tuesday, July 7. Funeral service will be at 2:00 pm on Wednesday, July 8. Burial will be at Jackson Grove Cemetery. As per the current guidelines in place a maximum amount of 50 people will be permitted in the funeral home at a time. If you are planning on attending the services it is recommended that you wear a mask and practice social distancing.

Evelyn Durham – Benton, IL

Evelyn Durham, 98, of Benton, passed away at 7:50 p.m., on Thursday, July 2, 2020, at her home surrounded by her loving family.

She was born November 2, 1921, to Frank and Rose (Lee) Corn in Macedonia. On April 21, 1940, she married Mathew Durham and he preceded her in death.

She was a loving mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. Her biggest joy was her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She loved giving advice and was very active. She especially enjoyed going on bus travel trips.

Evelyn is survived by her loving family, one daughter, Linda Inabnit of Macedonia; one son, Joe (Catherine) Durham of Mechanicsville, VA; one daughter-in-law, Leona Durham of Benton; one sister-in-law, Eloise Corn; nine grandchildren, Shane Inabnit, Shawn (Robin) Inabnit, Chad (Ashley) Inabnit, Michael Durham, Wade (Angie) Durham, Paige Durham, Connor Durham, Travis (Melissa) Sons, Kristal Hamilton; twelve great-grandchildren, Grayson, Cassie, Skylar, Cody, Peyton, Tyler, Kiley, Eli, Zoey, Camdon, Trevin, Tyler and many niece, nephews and cousins.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Frank and Rosa Corn, her husband, Mathew Durham, one son, Larry Durham and one brother, Bob Corn.

Services have been entrusted to Pate Funeral Home, 301 South Main St., Benton, IL.

Graveside services will be held on Tuesday, July 7, 2020, at 10:00 a.m. at Brady Cemetery in Akin, IL, with Ron Winemiller, officiating. Phase 4 Restore Guidelines will be in effect.

Charles Ray Clark- Johnston City, IL

Charles Ray Clark, 66, of Johnston City, IL passed away on Sunday June 28, 2020.

He was born on October 27, 1953 in Elgin to William and Joan (Bloom) Clark.

He is survived by his mother Joan (Bloom) Clark Galloway of Cleburn, IL; two brothers Billy Joe Clark of West Frankfort, IL and Robert L. Clark of Cleburn, IL and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his father, and one James A. Clark.

Charles lived at Progressive Management in Johnston City, IL. He was very athletic and loved competing in the Special Olympics. He also enjoyed going bowling and going out to eat.

Graveside services will be on Wednesday July 1, 2020 at 11:00 AM at the Union Cemetery in Dahlgren, IL with Brother Larry Cook officiating.

Dorothy Mae (Fowler) Webb – Ewing, IL

Dorothy Mae (Fowler) Webb, 99, of Ewing passed away peacefully in her sleep on Wednesday evening at Helia Health Care of Benton.

Dorothy was born in Ina, IL on May 1, 1921 to Joseph H. & Ruby (Duncan) Fowler. She married Leo P. Webb on December 7, 1940 in Perryville, MO. Together they spent 53 happy years. Dorothy worked for many years as a cook for the Ewing Grade School as well as enjoyed quilting, gardening and spending time with her family, especially her great-grandchildren who called her ME ME.
She was a founding member of New Hope Free WIll Baptist Church.

Cynthia Jean Sims-Mulkeytown, IL

Cynthia Jean Sims, 84, of Mulkeytown, passed away on June 25, 2020 at her home.

She was born on November 1, 1935 in Mulkeytown, IL to Val and Mary (Etherton) Norris. She married Carl Sims on April 28, 1951 in Pocahontas, AR, together they enjoyed 69 years of marriage and he survives of Mulkeytown.

She is also survived by her children Glenn (Susan) Sims of Mukwonago, WI, John (Laurel) Sims of Waltonville, IL, Arlie (Robert Kokott) Sims of Chicago, IL, Carla Sims of Centralia, IL and Mary (Michelle Leeper) Sims of Christopher; several grandchildren, great grandchildren and great great grandchildren and one sister Caroline Conner of Christopher.

She was preceded in death by her parents, step-mother Laura (Swisher) Norris, one son Thomas N. Sims and one sister Mildred Mannino.

Graveside services will be on Sunday June 28, 2020 at 3:00 PM at the Ward Cemetery in Mulkeytown with Pastor Bill Wiggs and Zip Biby officiating. Burial will be at Ward Cemetery in Mulkeytown.

In lieu of flowers donations can be made to the Ward-Greenwood Cemetery Association and will be accepted at the funeral home.

Clara Aline Crocker Brown – Sesser, IL

Clara Aline Crocker Brown, 99 years, 11 months, and 12 days passed away peacefully at her home in Sesser, on Saturday June 20, 2020.

Clara was born July 7, 1920 in Goode Township to Raymond J. and Mary Della (McBride) Crocker. Clara lived most of her entire life within a mile and a half of her birthplace. She married Andrew Earl Brown on December 19, 1939 in Jackson, Missouri.

Clara, attended rural schools; Mount Tabor and White Oak for her elementary education and in 1936, graduated from the Goode-Barren Township High School. After graduating high school she attended Southern Illinois University for a limited elementary certificate and taught at the White Oak School, northwest of Sesser.

After being a housewife and raising her children; with the encouragement of her father, she worked 19 years at the Franklin County Housing Authority in Benton and West Frankfort. Once retired from the housing authority, she worked for Goode Township in Sesser for 16 years.

Throughout Clara’s life she was a member of: the Goode Township Home Extension, American Legion Auxiliary Bates Post 560, Daughters of the American Revolution, and several genealogical societies such as: the Jackson County Illinois Genealogical Society, Grayson County Kentucky Genealogical Society, Jefferson County Ohio Genealogical Society, Southern Illinois Genealogy Society in Carterville, West Franklin Genealogical/History Society in Mulkeytown, and the Prairie Historian in Waltonville. Clara was also a charter member of the Goode-Barren Genealogical and Historical Society in Sesser. She was instrumental in starting the Goode-Barren Genealogical Library located in the back of the Goode Township.

During Clara’s later years with her love for genealogy; she mastered learning to use the computer, and spent countless hours searching the internet and corresponding with others. During her time spent working on her own family genealogy, she discovered her direct descendants came over on the Mayflower.

Clara spent many hours walking Maple Hill Cemetery; her hard work paid off in 1996, when she published the Maple Hill Cemetery Book; which she loved doing. The book was dedicated in memory of her husband. She also gathered information that was used for the publication of Horse Prairie Cemetery book. Clara took great pride in her yard and the love she had for flowers.

Above all, she loved her family. Clara is survived by two children: Ruth Ann McGlasson of Sesser, and David Earl Brown and wife Sharon Kay (Kerns) of Creston, IL.

At the young age of 38, becoming a grandmother, and not knowing what lied ahead of her; she opened her home to her grandchildren for various reasons throughout her life. She was proud of her home and the haven it provided throughout the years.

Clara was preceded in death by her husband Andrew “Earl” Brown, who died July 14, 1993. Her parents, Raymond J and Mary Della (McBride) Crocker; daughters, Glenna Jean (Brown) Roberson and Joyce Elaine (Brown) Gunter. Son-in-law, Hershel Lee Gunter; Sister, Dorothy Elizabeth (Crocker) Moody; brothers, Elmer Ellsworth Crocker, William “Bill” Crocker and Burton “Burt” Raymond Crocker. Sister-in-law, Wilma “Jean” (Dillow) Crocker and brother-in-law, Merle Moody and nephew, Carl Crocker. A special double cousin, Venona Lucille “Lucy” (Crocker) Laird. Clara also preceded in death by three special dogs who brought great joy to her: Rock, Bob and Krispy.

Graveside services will be on Sunday June 28, 2020 at 11:00 AM at the Maple Hill Cemetery with Brother Larry Cook officiating. Burial will be at the Maple Hill Cemetery in Sesser. Brayfield-Gilbert Funeral Home in Sesser is handling arrangements.
