Larry Massie-Valier, IL

Larry Massie, 72, of Valier, passed away on Monday January 7, 2019.

He was born on December 16, 1946 in East St. Louis, IL to Fred and Rithel Louise (Sisk) Massie. He married Cindy (Cox) Massie and together they had two sons Todd and Dan. He later married Anna (Graham) Massie on August 2, 2003 and she survives of Valier.

He is also survived by his two sons Todd (Dana) Massie of Troy, IL and Dan (Stacey) Massie of Carbondale; and their mother Cindy (Cox) Massie of Carbondale; step-daughter Julie (Nathan) Birk of Waterloo, IL; grandchildren Joelle, Mikayla, Anthony, Chace, Connor and Easton.

He was a retired school teacher, teaching at Christopher Elementary School for 34 ½ years. During the summer months he also worked for the Railroad and at Rend Lake as a Ranger with the Corp of Engineers. He was an Eagle Scout, member of the Christopher Jaycees, 32nd Degree Member of the Scottish Rite, a member of The Order of the Sword of Bunker Hill, Past Master of the Christopher Masonic Lodge Post 1016, and a member of the Sesser Masonic Lodge.

He was preceded in death by his parents, one sister Nancy Massie and one brother Mike Massie.

A memorial service will be on Saturday January 12, 2019 at 1:00 PM at the Gilbert Funeral Home in Christopher with Brother Dale Burzynski officiating. Visitation will be on Saturday from 11:00 AM until the time of the service at 1:00 PM. Masonic Rites will be on Saturday at 1:00 PM at the funeral home.

Kelllie Lynn Owens – Benton, IL

Kellie Lynn Owens, 41, of Benton, passed away peacefully at 3:08 a.m., on Thursday, January 3, 2019, at her residence surrounded by her loving family.

She was born on July 19, 1977, to Freddie D. and Katherine L. (Shaw) Higgerson in Pinckneyville, IL. Kellie worked as a Supervisor for Abbott EMS. On February 26, 2000, she married John Dean Owens, and they resided in Benton, IL.

Kellie started her career as a first responder in 1999, as an EMT, which she very much loved. She would then go on to further her education and career, and became a Paramedic. After many years of experience, she started her career in law enforcement as a Benton Police Officer, after several years she made the decision to return to her true love and passion of being a Paramedic for Abbott EMS as a Supervisor, and a part time Buckner Police Officer. Kellie deep down was a teddy bear at heart, fun and lovable. She enjoyed spending time with her husband, her two spoiled cats Johnny and June, and baking and cooking for family and friends.

Kellie is survived by her loving spouse of 19 years, John Dean Ownes; her mother, Katherine L. (Shaw) Higgerson; one brother, Michael Higgerson and wife Stacy.

She was preceded in death by her father, Freddie D. Higgerson; and one brother, Chris Higgerson.

Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to Pate Funeral Home, 301 South Main Street, Benton, Illinois 62812.

A celebration of life will be held at a later date.

Burial will take place at Masonic and Odd Fellows Cemetery, Benton, Illinois.

Myrl Conner-Sesser, IL

Myrl Conner, 81, of Sesser, IL passed away on Saturday December 22, 2018.

She was born on August 8, 1937 in Franklin County, IL to Wathie and Loney (Mocaby) Bennett. She married Oscar Conner on August 8, 1953 and he preceded her in death on December 4, 2010.

She is survived by her children Debbie (Randy) Hagston of Scheller, Tina (Mike) Melvin of Mulkeytown, Terryl (Leon) Dilliner of Sesser, Mike (Vicki) Conner of Herrin and Dana (Tony) Derington of Benton, KY; grandchildren Brent, Chanda, Amy, Jeff, Josh, Ginger, Anthony, McCartney and Bailey; 12 great grandchildren; two sisters Sharon Reichert of Herrin and Yi Drew of Tamms; one brother Dale Bennett of Ringold, GA.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, one son Tim Conner, four brothers Lindell Bennett, James “Cotton” Bennett, Wathie “Preach” Bennett and Donnie Bennett, two sisters Bernice Skurat and Mildred Wisnewski.

Myrl was a homemaker and a member of the West City Church of God and loved to sing.

Funeral services for Myrl will be on Wednesday December 26, 2018 at 1:00 PM at the Brayfield-Gilbert Funeral Home in Sesser with Brother Larry Cook officiating. Visitation will be on Wednesday from 11:00 AM until the time of the service at 1:00 PM. Burial will be at Maple Hill Cemetery in Sesser.

Barbara Holman Stilley – Benton, IL

Barbara Holman Stilley, 84, of Benton, IL passed away Sunday afternoon, December 16, 2018 at SSM Health Good Samaritan in Mt. Vernon.
She was born in Franklin County, IL on November 10, 1934, the daughter of Herbert Ray & Etta Mae (Harmon) Holman.
She retired from Good Samaritan Hospital after 21 1/2 years. She was a member of the West City Baptist Church.
She is survived by her children, Michael Burge, Roanoke, IN, Larry Burge and wife Mylene, of Benton, Herbert Burge and wife Letticia, of Jackson, TN and Andy Burge and wife Becky, of Bourbonnais; 19 grandchildren, several great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren; sisters Daisy Moore and husband Arnold, of Benton and Carolyn Holman, of Ewing; brothers Rod Holman and wife Angie, of Flora and Larry Holman and wife Thelma, of Centerville, OH. She was preceded in death by her parents and one brother, Melvin.

Edith “Edie” Pennell – Buckner, IL

Mrs. Edith “Edie” Pennell, age 57, of Buckner, passed away at 3:52 p.m. Monday, December 17, 2018.

Funeral Services for Edie will be held at 1:00 p.m. Thursday, December 20, 2018 at the Leffler Funeral Home of Benton, with Rev. Ryan Mulvaney officiating. Visitation will be from 11:00 a.m. Thursday until the funeral hour at 1:00 p.m. at the Leffler Funeral Home.

Edie was born on August 12, 1961 in Benton, the daughter of Lyndell McChesney and Edna May (Hall) McChesney. She was married to David Pennell, and he survives.
She worked, for many years, as a caregiver, until her health failed her. She enjoyed photography, antiquing, and going to yard sales.
Edie attended the Faith Church of God in Benton.
Mrs. Pennell is survived by her loving husband David Pennell of Buckner; two sons: Kevin McChesney of Southern Illinois, Kasie Curtis and wife Nikki of Buckner; two grandchildren: Kevin and Ashlynn; five sisters: Joy Burton of Edwardsville, IL, Christine Thomas of Benton, Diane Miller of Herrin, Terry McChesney of Mt. Vernon, IL, Sue McChesney of Texas; three sisters-in-law: Sandra Halicek of Harrison, MI, Janice Budd of the Orlando, FL area, and Susan Sabiack of Florida; and several nieces and nephews.
Edie was preceded in death by her parents; step-mother Marty McChesney; and a brother Jim McChesney.

Patrick Lynch – Christopher, IL

Patrick Lynch, 88, passed away on Sunday December 16, 2018 at his home.

He was born on February 23, 1930 in Chicago, IL to Owen and Mary Ellen (Marrinan) Lynch. He married Dimple (Carpenter) Lynch on August 24, 1952 and she preceded him in death on August 29, 2017

He lived in Chicago and worked as a union carpenter Local # 10, until retiring and then moved to Christopher in 2000.

He is survived by his three children Matt (Liz) Lynch, Patsy (Steve) Leo, and Phillip (Jeanne) Lynch; daughter-in-law Christine Lynch; grandchildren Christopher (Renee) Lynch, Nicole (Ryan) Whitmer, Patrick “PJ” Lynch, Dusta (Tom) Wheatly, Phillip (Suzanne) Lynch, Andrew Lynch, Ian Lynch, and Daniel Lynch; great grandchildren Alyssia Betsinger, Hannah Betsinger, Evan Whitmer, Katelynn Lynch, Braedan Lynch, Alex Peyton, Lillian Lynch, Brycen Lynch, Erika Lynch, Claire Wheatly, Benjamin Lynch; two brothers Matt Lynch and Jim (Sandy) Lynch.

He was preceded in death by his wife, parents, one son Owen Lynch, one grandson Michael Lynch, one sister Mary Carrol, two brothers Larry Lynch and Jack Lynch.

Bonnie B. (Pritchett) Hopkins – Benton, IL

 Bonnie B.(Pritchett) Hopkins, 62, of Benton, Illinois, passed away at 2:11 a.m. on Sunday December 9, 2018 at Franklin Hospital.  Bonnie’s final act ofkindness was to give the gift of life through organ donation.

Bonnie was born in Cicero, Illinois on August 7, 1956.  She was the daughter ofthe late Russell and Agnes Pritchett of Benton, Illinois. She graduated fromBenton Consolidated High School and Northeast Louisiana University. She earneda Bachelor of Science in Pharmacy in 1979 and worked as a Registered Pharmacist throughout her career until establishing a contracting business later in lifewith her surviving husband.

Sheis survived by her husband of 13 years, Brad Tucker; two children from her former marriage, Leslie Hopkins (Sandy White) of Benton, Illinois, and Mark Hopkins (Heather Murphy) of West Frankfort, Illinois; a step-son, Austin (Tammy) Tucker of Stone Lake, Wisconsin; one grandson, Tony Hopkins of Marion,Illinois; one step-grandson Andrew Tucker of Stone Lake, Wisconsin;parents-in-law Nadine and the late Gene Tucker of Benton, Illinois; twosisters, Irene Poyner of Martin, Tennessee, and Judy (Danny) Lampkins ofHardin, Kentucky; one sister-in-law, Brenda (Tony) Crawford of Portage,Wisconsin; and her beloved extended family.

Because of her delightful personality, Bonnie never met a stranger.  She loved her family and friends with all her heart. She loved watching her children’s sporting events when they were young.  She enjoyed music, her TV shows, and her pets. She also enjoyed playing Scrabble with one of her very best friends, the late Joni Sims.

Bonnie is preceded in death by her parents; and father-in-law.

A luncheon will take place from 12:00-1:00 p.m. on Sunday, December 16th at the St Paul’s Lutheran Church at 1 W Frankfort Plaza, West Frankfort, Illinois 62896, (618) 932-3450, with a Memorial Celebration of Life Service, officiated by Pastor Alan Janneke following the luncheon.  All who knew her are welcome.

A private family interment of ashes will be held at a later date in the Masonic & Odd Fellows Cemetery in Benton, Illinois.

Charles “Chuck” Vogel, 88, of Christopher passed away on December 9, 2018. He was born on June 5, 1930 in Christopher to Martin “Bill” and Maude (Jones) Vogel.  He married Naomi (Eldridge) Vogel on May 22,1955 and she survives of Christopher.

He is also survived by his daughter LuAnn (Rick) Polley of Mulkeytown; two grandsons Charles “Kip” (Ashley) Polleyof Granite City, IL and Tyler Loren Polley of Fort Lauderdale, FL; one greatgrandchild Taylor Ray Polley of Granite City, IL; one sister Frances Furlin;five nieces and nephews Jo Ellen Eldridge of Springfield, IL, Debbie (Ron)Frost of Austin, AR, Michael Eldridge of East Hazelcrest, IL, Jeffery Eldridgeof Sauk Village, IL, Teresa Eldridge of Lowell, IN; and several great nieces andnephews.

He was a member of the Masonic Lodgeand had served in the US Army during the Korean Conflict. He was also a memberof the First Christian Church in Christopher. He was preceded in death by his parents, step-father Joe Berolatti, mother and father-in-law Genell and Bob Reid, two brothers-in-law Pete Furlin and Raymond Eldridge.

Jane M. (Vaughn) Baine – Sesser, IL

Jane M. (Vaughn) Baine, 70, of Sesser and formerly of Aurora passed away Sunday night, December 9, 2018 at her home surrounded by her family.

Mrs. Baine was born in Aurora on January 30, 1948, the daughter of John Pierce & Alverda (Johnson) Vaughn.

Mrs. Baine was a member of Rescue Free Will Baptist Church in Whittington. She loved to make jewelry, and paint pictures. Her grandkids were her life.

She is survived by her husband, John T. Baine II, of Sesser; daughter Sara Montgomery, and husband Leonard Jr., of Benton; son John Travis Baine III, and wife Theresa, of Waterman, IL; grandchildren Alexandra Bree, and husband Kurtis, Shaina Baine, Micah Montgomery, J.T. Baine, Abigail Montgomery, Leonard “Trey” Montgomery III, Landon Baine and Melina Baine; great-grandson Talan Bee; sister Ruthann Gregg and husband Michael, of Prescott Valley, AZ; brother Jonathan Vaughn, of Sycamore, IL. She was also survived by several nieces and nephews.                

Mrs. Baine was preceded in death by her parents, two brothers, Roland Vaughn and Charles Vaughn and by one sister, Linda Kay Parks and her husband John.

Funeral services will be held at 10:00 A.M. Thursday, December 13th at the Morton & Johnston Funeral Home in Benton with Rev. Bryant Harris officiating. L. Jane Webster – Benton, IL

Mrs. L. Jane Webster, age 90, of Benton, IL passed away with her children by her side at 6:48 p.m. Tuesday, December 4, 2018 at Evelyn’s House Hospice Center of Creve Coeur, MO.

Celebration of Life Services for Mrs. Webster will be held at 3:00 p.m. Sunday, December 23, 2018 at the First Christian Church of Benton, with Pastor Kurt Sanders officiating. Visitation will be from 1:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m. Sunday, December 23, 2018 at the First Christian Church.

Arrangements are through the Leffler Funeral Home of Benton.

Jane was born on October 1, 1928 in Mogg, KY, the daughter of Edward Vernon Galloway and Mary Lillie (Harbin) Galloway. She married Alfred Jack Webster on August 28, 1948, and he preceded her in death on December 6, 1990.

Mrs. Webster formerly worked as a secretary with the U.B.E.W. Local in West Frankfort, and she was a member of the First Christian Church of Benton.

She enjoyed crocheting, cooking, reading, traveling, car rides, shopping trips, chocolate, her puppy dog Molly, and especially enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren.

Mrs. Webster is survived by two children: a son Brian Webster and wife Mila of Harriman, TN, a daughter Janetta Baker and husband Dale of Vonore, TN; two grandchildren: Christy Shannon Ayars of Ringold, GA, Devin Webster Baker of Chattanooga, TN; a sister Lucille Horton of Miami, FL; several nieces and nephews; and her church family.

Jane was preceded in death by her parents; husband; a son Brandon Jay Webster; two sisters: Nancy Brock, Jessie Ward; three brothers: Al Galloway, Barry Galloway, and Gene Galloway.

Memorial contributions may be made to the First Christian Church building fund, or the Evelyn’s House BJC Foundation for Hospice, and donations will be accepted at the church.
