Virginia “Sissy” Lee Saul — Christopher, IL

Virginia “Sissy” Lee Saul, 80, of Christopher passed away on Monday June 26, 2018 at her home.

She was born on April 29, 1938 in Christopher to Noble and Vanada (Boner) Saul.

She is survived by her brothers and sisters Lawrence (Vicki) Saul of Washington, Mike (Paula) Saul of Zeigler, Mary Pullium of Collinsville, IL, and Linda (Mike) Melson of Coello; and also several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, one sister Joyce Bullock and one brother Kenneth Saul.

She was a member of Southside Baptist Church in Christopher.

Funeral services will be on Thursday June 28, 2018 at 1:00 PM at the Gilbert Funeral Home in Christopher with Brother John Overturf officiating.  Visitation will be on Thursday from 11:00 AM until the time of the service at 1:00 PM.  Burial will be at Harrison Cemetery in Buckner.

Karl E. Keller-Benton, IL

Karl “Mr. Bingo” Keller, 70, of Benton passed away on Wednesday June 20, 2018 in Benton.

He was born on November 14, 1947 in Benton to Albert and Ruth (Craddock) Keller.

He is survived by several sisters.

Graveside services will be held on Sunday June 24, 2018 at 2:00 PM at the Maple Hill Cemetery in Sesser.

Jack G. Johnson – Thompsonville, IL

Jack G. Johnson, 89, of Thompsonville, born July 18, 1928, in Benton, IL, passed away June 15, 2018, at Herrin Hospital.

Jack was a loving husband, father and grandfather.  He enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren, working outdoors, gardening, fishing and hunting.
Mr. Johnson is survived by his loving spouse of 69 years, Darlene (Kerley) Johnson; three children, Terry Johnson and wife Brenda, Pam Wiggins and Mike Johnson; 9 Grandchildren, 13 Great Grandchildren and 3 Great-Great Grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents; a son-in-law, G.A. Wiggens; and a sister, JoAnn Dillion. Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to Pate Funeral Home, 301 S. Main St., Benton, IL.
Visitation will be held Monday, June 18, 2018, 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m., at Pate Funeral Home.Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, June 19, 2018, 10:30 a.m., at the Pate Funeral Home.  Burial will follow services at Masonic and Odd Fellows Cemetery.

Charles Eugene Emery-Herrin, IL

Charles Eugene Emery, 74, of Herrin, IL passed away peacefully on June 14, 2018 at the Linda E. White Hospice House in Evansville, IN.

Charles worked for Southern Illinois Wilbert Vault Company for 42 years and retired in 2005.

He loved being around family, friends and riding his Harley-Davidson motorcycle.

He was a member of the Herrin Elks, Herrin VFW, and the American Legion.

Charles was born March 11, 1944 in Herrin to Noles and Myrtle Emery.

He is survived by two sisters, Dorothy Dunning of Carbondale and Vivian Hall of Herrin and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, five sisters Virginia Emery, Mary Emery, Clara Payne, Wanda Allen, and Delores Knight; three brothers Dean Emery, Mike Emery and Richard Emery.

Graveside services will be on Monday June 18, 2018 at 10:00 AM at the Blairsville Cemetery with Rev. Donnie Colson officiating.

Charles Ray Blankenship – Marion, IL

Charles Ray Blankenship, age 89, Marion, IL, passed away peacefully at 9:26 a.m. on Friday, June 15, 2018, in the Veteran’s Community Living Center of Marion.
He was born on Wednesday, May 22, 1929, in Marion, IL the son of Earl Blankenship and Helen (McKinney) Blankenship.
Charles attended school in Marion and was a 1946 graduate of Marion High School, and continued his education at Southern Illinois University of Carbondale, IL.
He answered the call of this nation by serving in the United States Army as a telephone installer during the time of Korean War.
He was first united in marriage to Evelyn Shoemaker.  He later was united in marriage to Roberta Norman Hill on Saturday, May 22, 1976, in Marion and together they have shared over 42 years of marriage
Charlie and Roberta enjoyed traveling for many years within the United States, Canada, and Europe.  Their 30th wedding anniversary was celebrated with a tour to Nova Scotia and the Canadian Maritimes.
Charlie’s working career was with the family business of E. Blankenship & Co. Auto Parts.  He had been manager of several of the Blankenship Businesses in Southern Illinois before retiring twice from the Marion store.
He volunteered with civil defense when it was first organized.  Charlie received his pilot license after taking flying lessons on his lunch hour.  He loved being able to fly solo.  He enjoyed card playing with friends, especially with his “poker buddies”.  He was a volunteer shuttle driver for Heartland Medical Center and was a member of the Heartland Auxiliary and the Marion Cultural and Civic Center Foundation.  He enjoyed having lunch at Marion Senior Citizens Center with wife Roberta at table five.  Spending time with family and dear friends was very important to Charlie.
He is survived by his wife, Roberta J. Blankenship of Marion; two sons, Dennis (Marcia) Blankenship of Marion and David Blankenship of Murphysboro; two stepdaughters, Cynthia Hill Plain (Robert) of Roanoke, VA and Kay Hill Jones (Keith) of Florence AL; four grandchildren, Anne Blankenship Craig (Rob) of Marion, Elizabeth Blankenship Yates (Kory) of Cookeville, TN, Jacqueline Plain Boyer (George) and Jake Plain (Sarah) both of Virginia; two great grandsons, Peyton and Nathan Craig both of Marion; brother-in-law, James Griffin of Pittsburg, IL;  two sisters-in-law, Dolly Blankenship and Sandra Blankenship both of Marion,  several nieces and nephews;  special great niece, Sara Roman and many friends locally and from tours of the travels of Charlie and Roberta.
He was preceded in death by his parents; three brothers, Earl Blankenship Jr., Robert S. Blankenship and William E. Blankenship, two sisters-in-law; Julia Blankenship and Delores Griffin, and his first wife Evelyn Blankenship.
Arrangements for Charles Ray Blankenship have been entrusted to Wilson-McReynolds Funeral Home, 900 N. Court Street of Marion.
The time of visitation will be from 9:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday, June 19, 2018, at the funeral home.
Following the time of visitation the funeral service will be at 11:00 a.m. with Dr. Bob Wagner and a member of the Carbondale Unitarian Church Leadership presiding.
Interment will follow in Rose Hill Cemetery of Marion.

Carolyn Joyce Atchison-Sesser

Carolyn Joyce Atchison, 79, passed away on June 10, 2018 at Continued Care Hospital in Paducah, KY. 

She was born on May 6, 1939 to Margaret Basso and Frank Silas Clark.  She is survived by her children Kent Dale Kellerman and Kimberly Kay Ratajczyk of Sesser; grandchildren Ryan Marlo and special friend Sarah Acosta of Valier, Timothy “TJ” and Kara Ratajczyk of Scheller, and Jennifer Troub of Stephenville, YX; great grandchildren Jackson Troub and arriving soon Raegan Jean Ratajczyk; and sister-in-law Marilyn Clark of Rome, GA. 

She was preceded in death by her parents, two brothers Kenneth Clark and Jerry Clark and one sister-in-law Mary Ellen Clark.  Her wishes were to be cremated.  A memorial service will be held at a later date.

Ricaldo ‘Rick” Androvandi-Sesser, IL

Ricaldo “Rick” Androvandi, 76, of Sesser passed away on Sunday June 10, 2018 at the VA Community Living Center in Marion, IL.

He was born on August 3, 1941 in Glen Rogers, WV to Albert and Ceda (Attilli) Androvandi.  He married Brinda (Bennett) Androvandi on April 5, 1991 and she survives of Sesser.

Other survivors include his children Joe Androvandi of Las Vegas, NV, Shelby Androvandi of Las Vegas, NV, Tom Hancock of Barnhart, MO, Joe Hancock of Fenton, MO and MaLynda Hancock of Valier; one brother Nick (Barb) Androvandi of Valier; and one sister Marie Agoot of Hawaii; also survived by several grandchildren and great grandchildren.

He was a Marine serving during the Vietnam War.  He had worked for Webster Vending Company for several years. Rick and his wife Brinda have owned and operated Tropical Sno in Sesser since 1996.  He was a member of the Resurrection Baptist Church in Benton.

Funeral services will be on Thursday June 14, 2018 at 6:00 PM at the Brayfield-Gilbert Funeral Home in Sesser with Pastor Paul Keller officiating.  Visitation will be on Thursday from 4:00 PM until 6:00 PM at the funeral home.

In lieu of flowers donations can be made to the Sesser VFW and will be accepted at the funeral home.

Charles E. Keaton – Benton, IL

Charles E. Keaton, 86, of Benton, passed away at 5:25 p.m., on Sunday, June 10, 2018, at Memorial Hospital, Carbondale, IL.

He was born on November 23, 1931, to Hiram and Cordia (Gill) Keaton in Benton, IL. He graduated from University of Illinois with a Masters in Music Education.  On August 15, 1954, he married the former Shirley Olson at the Methodist Church in Mt. Vernon, IL. Charles and Shirley resided in Benton, IL.

Mr. Keaton was a United States Army Veteran.  He was a member of the Illinois Federation of Teachers and the United Mine Workers of America.  Charles was a music education teacher throughout his career he worked for Brownstown Grade School and High School, Du Quoin High School and Sesser Grade School and High School.  After his retirement from teaching, Charles decided to work for Arch Mineral Mine for 10 years, then retiring.   He was a master carpenter and continued to stay active after his retirement.  He enjoyed building and continued working until the day of his death.  He found joy in helping family and friends with any project none too large, Charles was ready for anything.

Charles is survived by his loving spouse of 63 years, Shirley Ann Keaton; many nieces and nephews; a great nephew named after him, Landon Keaton Stewart; and a great-great nephew also named after him, John Keaton Pulliam.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Hiram Elmer and Corida Ellen (Gill) Keaton; three sister, Madge Jones, Mona Lee Bays and Lou Deane Bailey.

Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to Pate Funeral Home, 301 S. Main St., Benton, IL.

Visitation will be held Thursday, June 14, 2018, 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m., at Pate Funeral Home.

Celebration of Life will be held on Thursday, June 14, 2018, 1:00 p.m., at the Pate Funeral Home.

Virginia Harris — Benton, IL

Virginia Harris, 88, of Benton, IL passed away Saturday, June 2, 2018 at the Helia HealthCare in Benton.
She was born in Benton, IL on January 5, 1930, the daughter of Ed & Sara (Sadler) Gibbs.
She was married to Darrell Harris, he preceded her in death in 1979.
Mrs. Harris is survived by her grandson, Jamey Tennyson, of Carrollton, TX; great-grandchildren Jonathan Tennyson and Autumn Boyd; daughter-in-law Sandy Tennyson, of Sesser.

Mrs. Harris was preceded in death by her parents, husband, by two sons, Roger and Wilbur Tennyson, and by four brothers and five sisters.

Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Thursday, June 7, 2018 at Morton & Johnston Funeral Home in Benton with Pastor Ron Reynolds officiating. Burial will be in the Franklin Cemetery in Whittington. Visitation will be after 11 a.m. on Thursday at the funeral home.
