Elizabeth Annete Carter – West Frankfort, IL

Elizabeth Annette Carter, 69, of West Frankfort, Illinois, passed away Tuesday April 3, 2018 in Franklin Hospital – Benton, Illinois at 8:05a.m.

Annette was born March 15, 1949 in Herrin, Illinois to Robert and Anna (Thomas) Melvin.

She was preceded in death by her son, Larry Scott Marvel and parents.

Annette is survived by her husband, Willie Carter; five sons: Steve (Angela) Marvel, Jeff Marvel, Josh (Sara) Marvel, Todd (Brook) Carter; and Matt Carter; brother, Chris (Gina) Melvin; sisters, Roberta (Mike) McLaren and Pat (Jim) Clark; grandchildren:  Adam, Andie, Macaibe, Stevey, Levi, Abbey, Evan, Sierra, and Lauren; great grandchild, Everly.

Memorial services will be held at 2 p.m. on Saturday April 7, 2018 at the Union Funeral Home – West Frankfort, Illinois. Visitation will be held from 12 noon until the time of the service at 2 p.m.

Mardell Fern “Ginger” Gingles — Benton, IL

Mardell Fern “Ginger” Gingles, age 83, of Benton; passed away Monday, April 2, 2018 at her home.

Funeral services will be held at 1:00 p.m. Saturday, April 7, 2018 in the Leffler Funeral Home, with Rev. Steven Flach officiating. Burial will be in the Masonic & Odd Fellows Cemetery of Benton. Visitation will be from 12:00 noon to 1:00 p.m. Saturday at the Leffler Funeral Home.

Mardell Fern Gingles was born on May 13, 1934 in Summerfield, OK, the daughter of Jeff David Parks and Elsie (Dunn) Parks. She married Joseph Gingles, JR. on July 14, 1969, and he preceded her in death on February 26, 2011

Mrs. Gingles and her late husband formerly owned and operated Gingles 1 Bar in Glenview, IL, and Gingles 2 Bar in Christopher.

She enjoyed being a homemaker and taking care of her family. She liked eating out especially at Red Lobster and loved to watch old classic Western movies on television.

She and her late husband formerly attended the Faith Baptist Church of Benton.

Mrs. Gingles is survived by her daughter Jacqueline Rohr of Elk Grove, IL.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; a daughter Karol Rohr; and a son Mark Rohr.

Nancy Bundy – West Frankfort, IL

Nancy Bundy, 80, of West Frankfort, Illinois, passed away Monday April 2, 2018 in her residence at 10:42a.m.

Nancy was born January 22, 1938 in West Frankfort, Illinois to Stanley and Lola (Shafer) Durst.  She loved her family especially her grandchildren.  Nancy was a member of First Christian Church – West Frankfort.  She also was a member of the Lion’s Club and Knight’s Shield. Nancy was a retired Denning Township supervisor.  She was a Kentucky Colonel.

She was preceded in death by her daughter, Wendy Miner in 1979; parents; sisters, Jean Link and Donna Stone; special friends, Joanie Pugh and Kay Eader.

Nancy is survived by her son, George (Jean) Miner; grandchildren, Daniel Miner and Sarah (Brett) Bombick; great grandchildren, Matthew and Emily Miner.

Funeral services will be held at 11:00a.m. on Thursday April 5, 2018 at Union Funeral Home – West Frankfort, Illinois with Minister Brian Harris officiating.  Burial will be in Tower Heights Cemetery – West Frankfort, Illinois.  Visitation will be from 9:00-11:00a.m. prior to the service.

Memorials may be made to the Night’s Shield and will be accepted at the funeral home.

Florence “Ellinor” Williams — Sesser, IL

Florence “Ellinor” Williams, 95, of Sesser passed away on Friday March 30, 2018.

She was born on October 9, 1922 in Woodstock, IL to James and Anna (Darrow) Christopherson.

She is survived by her children Pamela (Harold) Kund of Riverside, CA, Nancy (Carroll) Kelly of Sesser, Ruth (Paul) Biggers of Springfield, Janet (John) Watson of Sesser, and Thomas (Donna) Williams of Decatur; grandchildren Greg (Kristin) Kund of Riverside, CA, Susan (Ron) Brown of Riverside, CA, Kristie (Wayne) Spotanski of Scheller, Andrew (Kelly) Kelly of Sesser, Mikah (Craig) Salonies of Wentzville, MO,  Deric (Trina) Brookman of St Louis, MO, Alice (Scott) Gray of Ellicott City, MD, John (Tina) St. Germain of Sunnyville, CA; great grandchildren Skylar Kund, Tobin Kund, Tyler Brown, Kiley Kelly, LaRaya Kelly, Landon Kelly, Karsen Salonies, and Will Salonies.

She was preceded in death by her parents, two sisters, six brothers and one great grandson Dylon Kelly.

She was a member of the Sesser First United Methodist Church.

Funeral services will be on Wednesday April 4, 2018 at 1 p.m. at the Brayfield-Gilbert Funeral Home in Sesser with Pastor Allen Miller officiating.  Visitation will be on Wednesday April 4, 2018 from 12 noon until 1 p.m.  Burial will be at Maple Hill Cemetery in Sesser.

Ethan James Marcus-Christopher, IL

 

Ethan James Marcus, 26, of Christopher, IL passed away on March 29, 2018.

He was born on November 22, 1991 in DuQuoin, IL.

He is survived by his mother Donna (Mark) Anderton of Woodlawn; father Brandy Marcus of Coello; son Parker James Marcus and his mother Hannah; grandparents Carrie and Gale Eubanks of Sesser; aunts and uncles Chris and Jill Murry and Alan and Robbi Rieckenberg; step sister Alechia and Gabe Sveda; step brother Khorey Anderton; and several cousins.

Memorial service will be on Wednesday April 4, 2018 at 10 a.m. at the Gilbert Funeral Home in Christopher with Rev. Daniel Ison officiating.  Visitation will be on Tuesday April 3, 2018 from 5:00 PM until 8:00 Pm at the funeral home.  Burial will be at Maple Hill Cemetery in Sesser.

He was an avid outdoorsman, who enjoyed hunting, fishing, boating and motocross.

Mark Reed Harrison — Benton, IL

Mark Reed Harrison, age 75, of Benton, IL passed away at 3:45 p.m. Friday, March 30, 2018 at the Helia Healthcare of Benton.

Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Tuesday, April 3, 2018 in the Leffler Funeral Home, with Rev. Eddie Paul Davis officiating. Visitation will be from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home.  Burial will take place at 11 a.m. Thursday, April 5, 2018 at the Antioch Cemetery, near Macedonia.

Mark was born on March 3, 1943 in St. Louis, MO, the son of Harold Harrison and Mildred (Reed) Harrison.

Mark attended Western Military Academy in Alton, IL where he graduated in 1961. He would further his education, attending and graduating from both SIU-Carbondale and Evansville University, and would receive a Master’s Degree.

Mr. Harrison was a History Professor and a caregiver to his family. He was a member of the First United Methodist Church of Benton.

Mark enjoyed reading, and he spent countless hours at the Benton Public Library. He enjoyed dining out and visiting with friends and family. He also loved to travel, especially to Scottsdale, AZ.

He is survived by two special friends and their families: Sherry Richardson and husband Steve of Benton, and Carole Book and husband Jim of Benton.

Mark was preceded in death by his father Harold Harrison; his mother Mildred (Reed) Harrison Smith; and two uncles: Guy Reed, and Carter Harrison.

William “Bill” Jerry Neal — Ewing, IL

William “Bill” Jerry Neal, of Ewing, IL went to be with the Lord this beautiful Easter weekend. Bill was a loving father, grandfather and described by many as one of the kindest gentleman on this earth.

Bill leaves behind two children, Charles (Barbara) Neal and Brenda Neal, two grandchildren, Amber (Tim) Anderson and Kyle (Kacee) Neal. He is preceded in death by his loving wife of 65 years M. Marie (Beaty) Neal, brothers Curtis and Dean Neal, sister Faye Neal, and his parents Rolla and Dollie Neal.

Bill enjoyed everyday to the fullest whether he was visiting with friends, farming, working on his antique tractors, interacting with his Masonic Lodge brothers or with his Church Family, he was always smiling/laughing or pulling a prank. At 95 years old he was still the first person in the restaurant to shoot the straw wrapper across the table if he got the chance.

He was a member of the Mt. Zion Southern Baptist Church during his 28 years with Caterpillar Tractor Company working as a welder and millwright living in Decatur/Mt. Zion, Illinois. After he retired from Caterpillar, Bill and Marie moved back to Ewing and joined Frisco Baptist Church until it’s closing then attended Immanuel Baptist Church in Benton.

Bill’s celebration of life will be a graveside service held at the Neal Cemetery southwest of Logan on Monday, April 2, 2018 at 11 a.m. with Rev. Eddie Paul Davis officiating.

Bill was instrumental in the formation of the Ewing-Northern Fire Protection District, building the first two water tanker trucks and the family requests donations be made to the Ewing-Northern Fire Protection District in lieu of flowers.

Bobby G. Phillips — Benton, IL

Bobby G. Phillips, 73, of Benton, IL passed away Thursday Evening, March 29, 2018 at SIH Herrin Hospital in Herrin.

Mr. Phillips was born on September 13, 1944 in St. Louis, MO the son of Robert and Levia (Martin) Phillips.

Bobby was an Army Veteran. He retired from Maytag after 32 years.

Mr. Phillips is survived by his wife, Mary Phillips of Benton; one daughter Laura (Keith) Tite, of Carrier Mills, IL; one son, Jonathan (Abra) Field of Benton; five grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; two sisters, Linda Bush and Sandra Brooks, both of Galatia, IL. 

 Mr. Phillips was preceded in death by his parents; one sister, Joyce Phillips; two daughters, Patricia Edwards and Tammy Tanner and a son James Stewart.

Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. on Monday, April 2, 2018 at the Morton & Johnston Funeral Home in Benton with the Rev. Roger Roper officiating. Burial will be in the Bethel Cemetery in Benton. Visitation will be from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home.

Alva ‘Bud” Bowlin — Benton, IL

Alva “Bud” Bowlin, 91, of Benton passed away on March 28, 2018 in Benton.

He was born on January 14, 1927 in Christopher to Alva and Sybil (Johnson) Bowlin.  He married Jessie (Lunsford) Bowlin on August 10, 1946 and she preceded him in death on December 22, 2013.

Survivors include his daughter Christi (Dwayne) Kirkman of Benton; grandchildren Jonathon Kirkman, Korby Kirkman, and Adena Bowlin and fiancée Jeff Clark; daughter-in-law Gay Bowlin; great grandchildren Kailey (Dave) McCain and Zack Kirkman; great great grandchildren David McCain, Keegan McCain, Zaedyn McCain, Roxzyn McCain, Lynlee McCain; and one brother Wendell Bowlin of Sesser and a special friend Wanda Kirkpatrick.

He was preceded in death by his parents, one son Cyril Bowlin, and nine brothers and sisters Cyril Bowlin, Zolace “Hunky” Bowlin, Gofrey Bowlin, Elnora Harris, Wilda Black, Anna Lou Bate, Kayoda Breeding, Agatha Sandefur and Rowena DeWitt.

He was a member of the Masonic Lodge, Ainad Shriners, American Legion and Eastern Star.

He served in the United States Navy during World War II.  He was the founder of Bowlin’s Foodland. Bud was an avid outdoorsman, he loved to hunt and fish.  He was especially proud of his son Cyril that was inducted into the National Freshwater Fishing Hall of Fame.

Funeral services will be on Monday April 2, 2018 at 12:00 PM at the Gilbert Funeral Home in Christopher.  Visitation will be on Monday from 10:00 AM until 12:00 PM.  Burial will be at Harrison Cemetery in Buckner.

In lieu of flowers donations can be made to the Benton Ministerial Alliance Food Pantry and will be accepted at the funeral home.

Maynard Steele-Christopher, IL

 

Maynard Steele, 84, of Christopher passed away on March 29, 2018.

He was born on August 19, 1933 in Vergennes, IL to Vernon and Helen (Spencer) Steele.  He married Mary Katherine (Kovach) Steele on June 24, 1959 and she survives of Christopher.

He is also survived by one son Mark Steele; one sister Sonja Kiselewski and two brothers Al (Pat) Steele and Gary Steele.

His wishes were to be cremated with no services.
