Charles Melvin House – Benton

Charles (Chuck) Melvin House, 67, passed away unexpectedly on Tuesday, December 5, 2017. He was born in Benton on January 9, 1950, the son of James A. and Jaunita House. He was married to Barbara Curtis and she survives.

Chuck served his county honorably in the US Army from 1969 thru 1971, including a 12-month tour of duty in Vietnam. After returning from the service, he began a long and fulfilling career with Ford Motor Company at various plants in Michigan, where he resided for over 45 years.

Chuck was a fun loving, jolly person who was quick witted and always ready to play a prank or tell a joke. He was also an avid fan of NASCAR.

Chuck was preceded in death by his parents and an infant son, Eric. He is survived by his loving wife Barb, step-daughters Toni Hawkins and Dana(Clint) Hoelzer, first wife Lana, sons Brian (Heather) House, Jeremy House, and daughter Angie (Mark) Kinney. Chuck will be greatly missed by his nine grandchildren, Tyler, Haylee, Payton, Salemah, Logan, Jacob, Tiffany, Karah, and Kacey.

He is further survived by his sister Sue (Ed) Doty, brothers Butch Seibert, Ron (Carol) House, Lou (Leslie) House, as well as numerous nieces and nephews.

Visitation will be held on Sunday, December 10th from 5:00 P.M. to 8:00 P.M. and Monday December 11th preceding the funeral at 10:00 A.M., at Morton and Johnston Funeral home, 410 South Main Street in Benton. Pastor Kurt Sanders will be offiicating. Military Rites will be administered by the Benton American Legion & VFW Posts and the National Guard Honor Squad.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the First Christian Church Building Fund and will be accepted at any time at the funeral home.

Donald Rumsey – West Frankfort

Donald Gene Rumsey, born May 9th, 1952 to Junior and Ruth (Beames) Rumsey, left this world peacefully on Tuesday, December 5th at 1:55 p.m. in Herrin Hospital.

Gene is survived by his wife of 45 years, Susan (Loftus). He is also survived by his daughter Tiffany Williams, her husband Robert and their daughter Brooklyn, sons Harrison and Jase. Also surviving is his son Dallas, Dallas’ wife Lauren, and their sons Kaede and Reid. He is also survived by his Aunt Anna Lois Rumsey, and double cousins N. Wayne Rumsey, Joyce Rumsey, and Sue (Don) Loudermilk. Also surviving is his brother and sisters, James, Sheila, Gayla, Roberta, Sara, and his extra special sister Traci.

Donald Gene, DG, Genker, Geno or Pop (he answered to them all) was a very avid Cardinals baseball fan. He particularly enjoyed the days of Jack Buck and Mike Shannon on the AM radio. Gene also enjoyed fishing, hunting, and spending time on the beach with his wife Susan. He loved spending summer afternoons in the back yard by the pool, listening to the radio and cooking on the grill.

Donald Gene was employed at General/Continental Tire for 39 years, where he was a very dependable, dedicated worker. DG worked whatever schedule was needed to support his family.

Donald Gene’s wishes were to be cremated with no formal funeral. A graveside ceremony will be held at a future date. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Hospice of Southern Illinois, or to his grandchildren’s education fund.

Michael Settle – Benton

Michael Anthony Settle, age 62, of Benton IL,  passed away at 12:27 a.m. Tuesday, December 5, 2017, at the Franklin Hospital Emergency Room of Benton.

Memorial Celebration of Life Services will be held at a future date.

Leffler Funeral Home of Benton is in charge of the arrangements.

Mr. Settle was born on September 7, 1955 in San Francisco, CA, the son of Joel Settle and Naomi (Taliferro) Settle. He would marry the former Janaune Yankee on June 28, 1992 and she survives.

He formerly worked in data processing and accounting with H & R Block and 3ABN Radio.

He enjoyed music, especially playing the piano, and he loved to cook.

Mr. Settle was a member of the Thompsonville Seventh-Day Adventist Church.
He is survived by his loving wife of 25 years, Janaune Yankee of Benton; two daughters: Tae-Elise MR Settle, Gueyshen MN Settle, both of the Los Angeles area; ten grandchildren; three brothers: Joel Settle of Las Vegas, NV, Frederick Settle and Edward Settle, both of the Los Angeles area; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his paternal and maternal grandparents, and his parents.

Troy Doty – Benton

Troy Edward Doty, II, age 48, of Benton IL, passed away at 5:55 a.m. Tuesday, December 5, 2017, at his home.

Funeral services will be held at 3:00 p.m. Saturday, December 9, 2017 at the Leffler Funeral Home of Benton with Pastor Sue Solomon and Jim Laurent officiating.

Visitation will be from 1:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m. Saturday at the Leffler Funeral Home.
Mr. Doty was born on June 21, 1969 Du Quoin, IL, the son of Troy Edward Doty and Flora (Bray) Doty. He married the former Shannon Keller on October 25, 2016, and she survives.

He owned and operated his own construction company. He was a member of the Sons of the American Legion Post #280 of Benton, and he was a member of the Fraternal Order of Eagles Aerie 2898 of Benton.

He enjoyed boating, motorcycles, and his dog Trixie.

Troy is survived by his loving wife Shay Doty of Benton; two step-daughters: Erika Grimes and Kelsey Docherty, both of Benton; his mother-in-law: Pearl Vanhoorebeke; a grandson Allen Martin; two sisters: Nikki Gorby and husband Robert of St. Petersburg, FL, Debbie Mandrell of West Frankfort; a sister-in-law Cindy Keller, who also was his caregiver during his time with Hospice; three nieces: Rikki Bonthron and husband Raymond of Benton, Stefanie Bonthron of Benton, Danielle Mandrell of West Frankfort; three nephews: Justin Lipsey of West Frankfort, Shaun Mandrell of West Frankfort, William Bonthron of Benton; numerous cousins and many friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a nephew Trent Terry; two brothers-in-law: Tom Mandrell and Darrell Lipsey; many aunts and uncles; and his close friend Patrick Carr.

George Evilsizer-Christopher

George Evilsizer, 84, passed away on Saturday December 2, 2017 at Memorial Hospital in Belleville.

He was born on October 19, 1933 in Buckner, IL to George and Goldie Mae (Shover) Evilsizer. He married Charolett (Greenwood) Evilsizer on February 5, 1955 and she preceded him in death on April 25, 2016.

Survivors include his daughters Sherry (Sam) Timmons of Loyce City, TX, Cindy (Joe) Friend of Royalton, and Sue (Mike) Clements of Fairview Heights, IL; grandchildren Amy (Chris) Cates, Niki (Jacob) Tindell, Alexa (JD) Jones, Eric (Brittney) McElroy, Marty Clements, and Crystal LaChance; 15 great grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents and 7 sisters.

He was a United States Air Force veteran serving during the Korean War.

Funeral services will be on Thursday December 7, 2017 at 12:00 PM at the Gilbert Funeral Home in Christopher. Visitation will be on Thursday from 10:00 Am until the time of the service at 12:00 PM. Burial will be at Harrison Cemetery in Buckner.

Marion Rolla-Christopher, IL

Marion Rolla, 63, passed away on Saturday December 2, 2017 in Mt Vernon, IL.

He was born on March 1, 1954 in Christopher to John and Mary (Renik) Rolla.

Survivors include his daughters Jennifer (Rusty) Tolley of Belle Rive, IL and Jessica (George) Evans of Albers; four grandchildren Ava Tolley, Atley Tolley, Tuck Evans and Quinnley Evans; one sister Elona Lundstrom of Chicago, IL; two brothers Michael (Barb) Rolla and Stephen (Diane) Rolla both of Christopher.

He was a special education teacher and was a member of the St Andrews Catholic Church in Christopher.

He was preceded in death by his parents, two sisters Loretta Moore and Phyllis Cantua and one brother John Rolla Jr.

Graveside services will be held on Monday December 4, 2017 at 2:30 PM at the St Andrew’s Catholic Cemetery in Christopher with Pastor Josh Wehrmeier officiating.  Friends and family are asked to meet at the cemetery.

Charles Ivan Prior, Jr. – Benton IL

Charles Ivan Prior, Jr., 72, of Benton, passed away at 12:02 a.m., Friday,  December 1, 2017, at his home surrounded by his family.

Ivan was born on December 30, 1944, to Charles and Mary (Parkhill) Prior in West Frankfort, IL. On September 27, 1969, he married Ginger Cremeens and they made their home outside of Benton. Ivan started as a coal miner in 1971 at Inland Steel, Sesser, IL and continued working in the mining industry for 25 years. In 1987, he became a proud business owner for 31 years.

He served in the United States Army during the Vietnam Conflict from 1967 to 1969 where he was the recipient of the Silver Star, Purple Heart, Vietnam Service Medal, Bronze Star, Combat Infantryman Badge 1st Award, Republic of Vietnam Campaign Ribbon and Device and Expert Badge Pistol.

Ivan attended Rescue Freewill Baptist Church in Whittington, IL. He was a HAM Radio Operator since 1964 and a member of the Franklin County Amateur Radio Association.

Ivan loved his grandkids dearly and enjoyed traveling with his wife Ginger.

He is survived by his loving spouse of 48 years, Ginger, his mother, Mary Marie Prior of Thompsonville, IL; one son, Matt (Leslie Beth) Prior of Benton, IL; one grandson, Luke Prior of Benton, IL; one granddaughter, Sedona Mae Prior of Benton, IL ; one brother, Paul Prior of Newburg, IN and one sister, Peggy (Gary) Clark of Pittsburg, IL. He is also survived by one niece and many nephews.

He was preceded in death by his father, Charles Ivan Prior, Sr.

Services have been entrusted to Pate Funeral Home, 301 S. Main St., Benton, IL.

Visitation will be held on Monday, December 4, 2017, from 12:30 p.m. to 2:00 p.m. at Pate Funeral Home, Benton, IL.

Funeral services will be held on Monday, December 4, 2017, 2:00 p.m. at the Pate Funeral Home, Benton, IL, with the Rev. Gary Clark and the Rev. Bryant Harris, officiating.

Norma Mocaby – Logan

Norma Jean Mocaby, age 78, of Logan IL, passed away at 11:23 p.m. Friday, December 1, 2017, at the Franklin Hospital Emergency Room of Benton.

Funeral services will be held at 1:00 p.m. Wednesday, December 6, 2017 in the Leffler Funeral Home of Benton. Burial will be in the Plasters Cemetery near Thompsonville. Visitation will be from 11:00 a.m. Wednesday until the time of the funeral at the Leffler Funeral Home of Benton.

Norma was born on February 26, 1939 in West Frankfort, the daughter of Humbert and Mary Lucinda (Nelson) Perryman. She married Claude Mocaby, and he preceded her in death in June of 1994.

Mrs. Mocaby was a fulltime homemaker. She enjoyed sitting outside on her porch swing, sitting by bonfires, and most of all she enjoyed her grandchildren.

She formerly attended the Logan Church of God.

Mrs. Mocaby is survived by her loving children: Denzil Mocaby of Logan, Helen Willett of Logan, Neal Mocaby of Logan, and Michelle Mocaby of Carbondale; nine grandchildren: Robert Willett, Terry Parkhill, Tiffany Barlow, Claudia Bolivar, Ada Mocaby, Bryan Mocaby, Lorissa Mocaby, Hailey Mocaby, Brooklyn Mocaby; twelve great-grandchildren: Bailey Willett, Payton Blankenship, Cami Roberts, Haden Jeter, Kade Jeter, Adalyn Jeter, Adonis Westerburg, Aurora Bolivar, Luciano Bolivar, Madison Parkhill, Colton Mocaby, Zaiden Mocaby; and a great-grandchild on his way Creek Neal Mocaby; three sisters: Maxine Ranson of Portland, OR, Joyce Fryman of Mattoon, IL, Linda Ray of Thompsonville; and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; and ten siblings: James Vernie Perryman, Beulah Webb, Ethel Moore, Mary Irvin, Nadine Wilson, Vonda Kerley, Novella Rich, Jerry Richard Perryman, Denzil Perryman, and Robert Nelson.

Louis “Louie” Pechenino-Christopher

Louis “Louie” Pechenino, 97, of Christopher passed away on Friday December 1, 2017 at 7:52 PM at the Herrin Hospital.

He was born on September 22, 1920 in Coello to Joseph and Jenny (Vallero) Pechenino. He married Paulagene (Reed) Pechenino on November 27, 1947. They recently celebrated their 70th wedding anniversary.

Survivors include his wife Paulagene of Christopher; one son Paul (Susan) Pechenino of Trenton, IL; four grandchildren Julie, Kenneth, Angela, and Amy; three great grandchildren Andrew, Gabby, and Louie.

He was a World War II veteran serving in the Army. He was a member of the Christopher American Legion, Christopher Lion’s Club, Christopher Library Board, and was an Alderman for the City of Christopher for many years.

He was a teacher and served as principal  at the Hoffman School in Cahokia.

He was preceded in death by his parents, one daughter Darla Siegrist, one son Gary Joe Pechenino, and one brother Tony Pechenino.

Funeral services will be on Tuesday December 5, 2017 at 11:00 AM at the Gilbert Funeral Home in Christopher with Matt Crain officiating. Visitation will be on Monday from 5:00 PM until 8:00 PM at the funeral home. Burial will be at St Andrew’s Catholic Cemetery in Christopher.
