Obituary – Harold Kniffen – Ewing, IL

Harold Kniffen, 84, of Ewing, IL, passed away Monday, April 11, 2016 at SSM Health Good Samaritan, in Mt. Vernon, IL.

Harold was born on Sept. 20, 1931, in Spring Garden, IL, the son of Ray and Mary Ellen “Shorty” (Friar) Kniffen.

He married Delena (Harmon) and she preceded him in death on June 3, 2002.

Harold was a former mayor of Ewing. He owned and operated the Ewing Garage. He was a Mason and had served as Past Master and was very active in the lodge. He was also very active as a Shriner. His passions were antique cars and steam engines.

He is survived by his son, James Kniffen, of Merrionette Park, IL; grandchildren Stacy Paguet and husband John, of LaGrange, IL, Kelly Kniffen, of Chicago; great-grandchildren Owen James Paguet and Cameron John Paguet; brother Nick Kniffen. He is also survived by several nieces and nephews.

Harold was preceded in death by his parents; his wife Delena Kniffen; daughters Sharon Kay Kniffen and Sandra Fay Kniffen; son Ralph Edward Kniffen; one sister Thelma.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, April 16, 2016 at Johnston Funeral Home, in Ina, IL, with the Rev. Mike Kniffen and the Rev. Michael Lee Kniffen officiating. Visitation will be from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. on Friday, April 15, 2016 at Johnston Funeral Home. Burial will be in Hams Grove Cemetery, in Belle Rive, IL.

Masonic rites will be conducted at 7:30 p.m. on Friday at the funeral home.

Arthur Ford Baker – Benton, IL

Arthur Ford Baker, 85, of Benton, IL, passed away Sunday, April 10, 2016 at Good Samaritan Hospital, in Mt. Vernon, IL.

Mr. Baker was born on April 6, 1931 in Champaign, IL, the son of Arthur G. and Louane (Ford) Baker. He married Suzanne George in 1958 and she survives.

He was a Korean War veteran, a member of the First Christian Church, in Benton, for more than 70 years where he was a Deacon Emeritus. He was a graduate of University of Illinois and was a member of Theta Chi Fraternity. He loved hunting and fishing.

Mr. Baker is survived by his wife Suzanne, of Benton, daughter Allison Myers and husband Rick of Metropolis, IL, son Dale Baker and wife Janetta, of Maryville, TN; sister Meridy Gillespie and husband David, of Chatham, IL; nephews Dan Aiken, Joel Aiken and Andrew Gillespie, nieces Paula Fuller and Kristin Mapes. Mr. Baker was preceded in death by his parents.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, April 13, 2016 at Morton & Johnston Funeral Home, in Benton, with Pastor Kurt Sanders officiating. Visitation will be from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. on Tuesday, April 12, 2016 at the funeral home.

Arthur “Duke” Duchene — Mulkeytown, IL

Arthur “Duke” Henry Duchene, 78, of Mulkeytown, IL, passed away April 10, 2016 at Herrin Hospital.

duchene 1He was born August 19, 1937 in Mulkeytown, the son of Emile Duchene and Marie (Hubbard) Duchene.

He married Joyce Kay (Knight) on April 6, 2002 and she survives of Mulkeytown.

Mr. Duchene was a coal miner and worked at Orient 6. He was an Army veteran and served during the Vietnam era.

Mr. Duchene was a member of the UMWA and the American Legion in Christopher. He was an avid NASCAR fan and also liked to hunt and fish.

He is survived by his children, Ron and Lisa Williams, of Benton, IL, Rhonda Bush, of West Frankfort, IL, Lisa and Tony Rodriguez, of West Frankfort, IL and Stephen and Brittany Chirch, of Benton, IL; grandchildren Melissa Wade, of West Frankfort, Justin Williams, of West Frankfort, Morgan Williams, of Johnston City, IL, Branden Eubanks, of Benton, IL, Nathan Malec, of West Frankfort, IL, Tricia Malec, of West Frankfort, IL, Amanda Owens of West Frankfort, IL, Tasha Dirks of West Frankfort, IL, Brandi Bowling of West Frankfort, IL, Chelsea Williams of West Frankfort, IL, Layla Chirch of West Frankfort, IL, Phillip Parker Chirch of West Frankfort, IL.  He is also survived by several great-grandchildren and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, one brother, and one son-in-law Kevin Bush.

Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. on Wednesday, April 13, 2016 at Gilbert Funeral Home, in Christopher, IL with Brother Harol Whitlock officiating. Visitation will be on from 11 a.m. until the time of the service on Wednesday, April 13, 2016 at the funeral home.

Dennis Carl Parker – Benton, IL

Dennis Carl Parker, 64, of Benton, passed away Saturday, April 2, 2016 at the Illinois Veteran’s Home in Quincy, IL surrounded by his family.

He is survived by his wife, Kathy (Stewart) Parker, of Benton; daughter Leann (Parker) Stilley and husband Jason; grandson River Hagen Stilley, of Paducah; brother Roy Parker and wife Lulu, of Benton; sister Shalyn (Parker) Settlemoir and husband Curt, of Benton, as well as nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Roy Lee and Yulanda (Rector) Parker; father-in-law and mother-in-law Jim and Ann Stewart, nieces Emily and Ann Parker and nephew Jason Settlemoir.

Mr. Parker was a veteran of the U.S. Air Force.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. on Saturday, April 9, 2016 at Immanuel Baptist Church, in Benton, with the Rev. Mark Minor and the Rev. Ron Cremeens officiating. Burial with military rites will be at Masonic & Oddfellows Cemetery in Benton. Visitation will be from 12 noon until the time of the service at 2 p.m. Saturday at the church.

Ralph Ivan Davis – Mulkeytown, IL

Ralph Ivan Davis, 75, of Mulkeytown, IL passed away April 4, 2016 at Marshall Browning Hospital Emergency Room, in Du Quoin, IL.

Mr. Davis was born on February 5, 1941, in Herrin, IL, the son of Ralph Davis and Myrtle (Miller) Davis.

He married Laura Jean Davis on October 29, 1966 and she survives.

Mr. Davis was a coal miner at CONSOL Coal Company, in Sesser, for 22 years. He was a member of the Mulkeytown Christian Church and a member fo the American Legion, Christopher, IL.

Mr. Davis is survived by his children, Bill and Robin Acord, Mulkeytown, IL; grandchildren Stephanie Cambron, Benton, IL and Ryan Acord, of Mulkeytown, IL; great-grandchildren Gauge L Hagerman, Harper Cambron and Hudson Cambron; sister Mable Chapman, Herrin, IL, and step-sister Elaine Gottlieb, San Antonio, TX.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

Mr. Davis’ wishes were to be cremated. Graveside funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Friday, April 8, 2016 at Mulkeytown Cemetery with the Rev. Kurt Jensen officiating. Friends and family are asked to meet at the cemetery.

Eleanor B. Winget – Remington, IL

Eleanor B. Winget, 89, of Remington, IL, passed away April 4, 2016.

Eleanor was born April 20, 1926, in Harrisburg, IL, the daughter of William L. Bricker and Iva Marie (Jack) Bricker.

She married Dempsey Winget and he preceded her in death on Feb. 2, 1965. She was a beautician.

Eleanor is survived by her children, Leah and Richard Alexander, of Maiden NC, David and Kay Winget, Little Rock, AR, Daniel Winget, Rensselaer, IN and Iva Biggs, of Florida; 10 grandchildren; 20 grandchildren; six great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband one daughter Beth Alexander, one sister Mary Swaringin, and one brother William Bricker.

Graveside funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. on Friday, April 8, 2016 at Mulkeytown Cemetery, Mulkeytown, IL with the Rev. Kurt Jensen officiating.

Friends and family are asked to meet at the cemetery.

Shirley Sue McClarin – Benton, IL

Benton, IL — Shirley Sue McClarin, age 74, of Benton, passed away at 2:22 p.m. Thursday, March 31, 2016 at the SSM Good Samaritan Regional Health Center in Mt. Vernon.

Funeral services will be held at 1:00 p.m. Monday, April 4, 2016 at the Leffler Funeral Home of Benton with Rev. Harol Whitlock officiating. Burial will be in the Masonic & Odd Fellows Cemetery in Benton. Visitation will be from 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Sunday evening at the Leffler Funeral Home of Benton.

Ms. McClarin was born on April 29, 1941 in Benton, the daughter of Charles Elkins and Ruby (Kirk) Elkins.

Shirley was a door greeter at Wal-Mart in West City. Earlier in her working career, she was employed as a housekeeper at the Franklin Hospital.

She enjoyed working, watching television, her cat, and spending time with her family.

Shirley is survived by her daughter Marcia and husband Art Gostowski of Benton; a granddaughter Janet and husband Matt Dunn of Melbourne, FL; four great-grandchildren: Xavier, Alex, Marcus, and Max.

Ms. McClarin was preceded in death by her parents.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Franklin County Animal Shelter, and will be accepted at the funeral home.

Chlora Corgnati, 85, of Christopher, IL, passed away March 29, 2016 at Eldorado Rehab & Healthcare, in Eldorado, IL.

Chlora was born on December 15, 1930 to Benjamin Bright and Rosa (Whitworth) Bright.

She was married to Tony Corgnati and he preceded her in death on March 19, 1992.

 Chlora was preceded in death by her husband, parents and one brother and one sister.

Chlora wishes were to be cremated with no services, her ashes will be interred in the San Carlos Catholic Cemetery in Herrin IL

Timothy L. “Yo Sam” Jones – Christopher, IL

Timothy L. “Yo Sam” Jones, 43, Christopher, IL, passed away March 29, 2016 at Franklin Hospital Emergency Room, in Benton, IL.

timothy jonesMr. Jones was born May 25, 1972, in Mt. Vernon, IL, the son of Thomas L. Jones and Cheryl Daggs. His father preceded him in death.

He was a truck driver.

He is survived by his children, Stephanie Conner and fiance Cody Cluck, of Florida, Jennifer and Tyler Ham of Florida; his step-father, Larry Colp, of Christopher, IL; grandchildren Selena Cluck and Ayden Ham. He is also survived by several aunts, nieces, nephews and great nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his father, grandparents, uncles, aunts and two grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. on Monday, April 4, 2016 at Brayfield-Gilbert Funeral Home, in Sesser, IL with Brother Mark Miller officiating. Visitation will be on Sunday, April 3, 2016 from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the funeral home. Burial will be at Maple Hill Cemetery, in Sesser, IL.

Gail Ivan Furlow – Buckner, IL

Gail Ivan Furlow, 69, of Buckner, IL passed away on  March 27, 2016, at his residence.

furlowHe was born on April 13, 1946, to Perry and Zelma (Holman) Furlow. Gail was a member of the United States Army serving in the Vietnam War.

Gail is survived by his loving daughter, Crystal Gail Van Ausdoll and husband Tim of Vienna, IL; three grandchildren, Emily Hudson and husband Jacob, Collin Van Ausdoll and Grace Van Ausdoll; ; three sisters, Connie Lambert, Brenda Kovach and Marylin Kindler.

 He was preceded in death by his parents, Perry and Zelma Furlow and one brother, Virgil Furlow.

 Visitation will be held Thursday, March 31, 2016,  from 10:00 am – 1:00 pm at Pate Funeral Home, 301 South Main St., Benton, IL.

Funeral services will be held on Thursday, March 31, 2016, at 1:00 pm at the Pate Funeral Home, Benton, IL, with Pastor Jason Todd officiating. Burial will take place in the Harrison Cemetery, with military rites by the Benton American Legion Post 280, VFW Post 2671 and the National Guard Honors Team.
