Sherry Lynn Johnson – Benton, IL

Sherry Lynn Johnson, 66, of Benton passed away Friday afternoon, April 30, 2021 at the Helia HealthCare in Benton.

She was born in Christopher, IL on Nov. 24, 1954, the daughter of Harold Dean and Flora Mae (Good) Furlow.
Sherry married Steve Johnson on Oct. 8, 1971 in Elizabethtown, IL, and he survives.

Sherry lived for her family, especially her granddaughter. Sherry started her career as a CNA, she then went to LPN school, then became a Registered Nurse, and over the years served as Head Supervisor over ICU at UMWA Hospital in West Frankfort, and was House Supervisor at UMWA when she left to go to Frankfort Health Care where she started as Director of Nurses, then became Administrator and retired from that position.

Granddaughter: KayLee Little of Buckner
Mrs. Johnson was preceded in death by her Parents & by 2 Sisters-Sue Travelstead & husband Raymond Travelstead and Bernadine Braddy.
Funeral services will be held at 1 P.M. Monday, May 3rd at the Morton & Johnston Funeral Home in Benton with Rev. Bill Perry officiating. Burial will be in the Mulkeytown Cemetery. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 P.M. Sunday at the funeral home.

Joe Ronchetto – Benton, Illinois

Joe Robert Ronchetto, age 74 of Benton; passed from this life to his Heavenly Home, to be with his Lord and Savior at 2:09 p.m. Wednesday, April 28, 2021.

Funeral services will be held at 12:00 noon Wednesday, May 5, 2021 at the Leffler Funeral Home of Benton with Rev. Kevin Bradley officiating. Burial will be in the Masonic & Odd Fellows Cemetery of Benton. Visitation will be from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 noon Wednesday at the Leffler Funeral Home.

Joe Robert Ronchetto was born on July 24, 1946 in Du Quoin, Illinois; the son of Domenick Joe Ronchetto and Juanita (Daniels) Ronchetto. He married the former Janet Sue Lampley on April 3, 1976, and together they shared 45 years of marriage.
He was a retired coal miner having worked with Old Ben Coal Mines #24 & 21, Shoal Creek Mine in Alabama, and the Cutler Mine. He was a ten-year member of the U.M.W.A., before becoming a company employee.

Joe was a member of Valier First Baptist Church, where he loved to worship his Lord playing the bass guitar and singing.
He enjoyed camping, fishing, line dancing, boating; but most of all he loved spending time with his grandkids.

Surviving is his loving wife Janet Sue Ronchetto of Benton; four children: Jo Lee Baker of Benton, Misty Altiparmak and husband Korhan of Helena, AL, Tatia Trover and husband Kevin of Herrin, IL, Clinton Ronchetto and wife Susan of Herrin, IL; grandchildren: Brooke Butcher and husband Nate of Benton, Kelsey Baker of Florida, Naylin Ronchetto of Benton, Kaya Altiparmak of Helena, AL, Landon Trover of Herrin, IL, Kaleb Stanhouse and wife Mackenzie of Du Quoin, IL, Devin Stanhouse of Du Quoin, IL; great-grandchildren: Zayden Butcher and Kyson Butcher both of Benton, Ariella Stanhouse and Zoe Stanhouse both of Du Quoin, IL; a brother Dom Ronchetto, Jr. of Mulkeytown, IL; and several nieces and nephews.

Joe was preceded in death by his parents: Domenick and Juanita Ronchetto; his father and mother-in-law: Alvis and Fay Lampley; and a nephew Clint Anthony Ronchetto.

John Henry Slayton – Addieville

John Henry Slayton, 77, of Addieville, passed away at 7:40 p.m., on Friday, April 23, 2021, at Memorial Hospital East, Shiloh, IL.

He was born on July 5, 1943 to Luther F. and Evelyn M. (Parrish) Slayton in East St. Louis, IL. John was a United States Marine Corps Veteran serving during the Vietnam War. John retired from Sears & Roebuck after 45 years as a Repairman. On July 30, 1962, he married Sherry Hutchens and she preceded him in death on November 16, 2017. To this union they had three children.

John was a loving father, grandfather and great-grandfather. He enjoyed restoring classic cars, building furniture, baking sweets. John took so much pride building the house which his family resided in.

He is survived by his two daughters, Lori A. Baum of Murphysboro, IL and Mary E. (Adrian) Johnson of Belleville, IL; one son, Robert S. Slayton of Beckemeyer, IL; three grandsons, Joshua Baum of Murphysboro, IL, Cole (Veronica) Johnson of Fort Bliss, TX and Jack Johnson of Belleville, IL; three granddaughters, Heather (Kelly) Baum-Cusick of Carbondale, IL, Kaitlyn (John) O’Quinn of MO and Emma Johnson of Belleville, IL; five great-granddaughters, MyKayla Baum of Waterloo, IL, Macie Baum of Carbondale, IL, Michelena O’Quinn of MO, Tenley Baum of Carbondale, ILand Aubreen O’Quinn of MO; one brother, James (Lydia) Slayton of Granite City, IL; one sister, Clarcie (Terry) Tyler of Collinsville, IL; and many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

He was preceded in death by parents, Luther F. and Evelyn (Parrish) Slayton; wife, Sherry Ann Slayton; and sister Frances Slayton.

Funeral Services have been entrusted to Pate Funeral Home, 301 S. Main St., Benton, IL.

Visitation will be held Tuesday, April 27, 2021, from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m., at Pate Funeral Home, Benton, IL.

Funeral services will be held at 1:00 p.m., on Wednesday, April 28, 2021, at the Pate Funeral Home, Benton, IL.

Burial will take place in the Masonic and Odd Fellows Cemetery, with military rites by the Benton American Legion Post 280, VFW Post 2671 and the Marine Corps Honors Team.

Donna Manasco-Marion, IL

Donna Manasco, 70, of Marion, passed away on Friday April 23, 2021 at her home.

She was born on March 3, 1951 in Christopher to Charles and Patricia (Warren) Shaffer. She married Roy Manasco and he preceded her in death on September 12, 2019.

She is survived by her children David Shepard of Marion and Mike (Helen) Shepard of Carterville; grandchildren Wesley Humphrey, Brittany Shepard, Kayley (Jeremy) Dulaney, Elishia Shepard, Rebecca Shepard and Jarred Shepard; great grandchildren Lauren Dulaney, Isaac Peters, Alivia Peters and Sy Shepard and one sister Debra Shaffer of Sesser.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband and one son Jerry Litton.

Funeral services for Donna will be on Tuesday April 27, 2021 at 11:00 AM at the Gilbert Funeral Home in Christopher with Brother Toni Edmonds officiating. Visitation will be on Tuesday from 10:00 AM until the time of the service at 11:00 AM. Burial will be at Zeigler Cemetery.

Don Haskell Garner-Sesser

Don Haskell Garner, 89, of Sesser passed away on Saturday, April 24, 2021 at home with his family by his side.

He was born on November 22, 1931 in Sesser, IL to Reggie and Ruth (Stodghill) Garner. Don married Barbara (McGovern) Garner and she preceded him in death on February 16, 2012. Don worked as a coal miner until his retirement in 1994. Don loved his family and his greatest joys came from spending time with them.

He is survived by his children: Lonnie (Cheryl) Garner, Jayne Pettit & Dawn Garner. Grandchildren: Laura Garner-Mayer (Brent), Craig (Melodee) Garner, Kristen Anastasi, Justin (Ashley) Dickey, Shane (Bethany) Garner and Drew (Kayelee) Pettit. Great Grandchildren: Maty Garner, Jaycee Garner, Haydon Mayer, Caleb Lewis, Josie Anastasi, Emmalyn Dickey, Cru Garner, Nora Dickey, Ellie Garner, Cala Garner, Lahna Pettit, Croix Garner and Isla Pettit.

He was preceded in death by his parents Reggie and Ruth Garner, wife, Barbara Garner, son, Danny Garner, brother, Billie Garner, son in law, Larry Pettit and daughter in law, Debbie Garner.

Graveside services will be on Monday, April 26, 2021 at 11:00 AM at Mitchell Cemetery in Sesser, IL with Bro. Chris Hottensen officiating. Friends and family are asked to meet at the cemetery. The family would like to express their gratitude to Hospice of Southern Illinois for their compassion and kindness during this time.

Larry Wayne Lewis – Benton, IL

Larry Wayne Lewis, age 63, of Benton, passed away at 9:20 a.m. Thursday, April 22, 2021 at the Herrin Hospital.

His wishes are to be cremated. A private family Celebration of Life Service will be held at a future date.

Larry Wayne Lewis was born on March 23, 1958 in Decatur, IL; the son of Lester Lewis and Bessie (Moutrey) Lewis.

He enjoyed watching movies, attending church, spending time with his family. He loved animals.

Surviving are three sisters: Clara Lewis of Benton, Marie Ledbetter of Maroa, IL, Shirley Albright of Colorado; two nieces: Heather Bagley and family, Kimberly Ledbetter and family; two nephews: Johnnie Broughton and family, Michael Ledbetter and family.

Floyd Smith – Franklin County

Floyd Smith, 66, of Franklin County passed away Tuesday, April 20, 2021.

He was born in Christopher, IL on February 1, 1955 the son of Harold A. & Helen Flora (Willmore) Smith.
He married Kathy (Saddler) on October 29, 1995, and she survives.

Mr. Smith enjoyed having his grandbabies over, and fishing.

Mr. Smith is survived by his wife Kathy Smith, of Franklin County; children Rainey and David Gunter, of Harrisburg, IL, Bobbie Lenard, and friend Kevin, of Zeigler, IL, Michael and Linda Lenard, of Christopher, IL, Lance Lenard, of Franklin County, Chelsea Wininger and husband Josh, of Vincennes, IN and Josh Grimes, of Royalton, IL; 22 grandchildren, and one on the way; 9 great-grandchildren and a brother, David Smith, and wife Donna, of Benton, IL

Floyd was preceded in death by his parents, a grandson, three sisters, Clodena Lampley, Mary Nastasi and Brenda Smith.

Irene Toigo-Christopher, IL

Irene Toigo, 91, of Christopher, passed away on Tuesday April 20, 2021 at the Helia Healthcare in Benton, IL.

She was born on July 18, 1929 in DuQuoin, IL to Clyde Rabrum and Pearl (Spann) Vaughn. She married John Toigo JR and he preceded her in death on October 5, 1976.

She is survived by her children Joni (Ed) Perkins of Chrsitopher and John (Lori) Toigo III of Christopher; grandchildren Casey Cavinder, Tracy Cavinder, John Toigo IV, Celeste (Nick) Batts, Sarah (Gene Furlow) Toigo, Jesse Perkins, Jacob (Misty Knight) Perkins and Ethan Perkins; great grandchildren Rylan Perkins, Kynslee Perkins, Madison Perkins, Hayes Batts, Payton Batts, Ivy Furlow, Riley Furlow, Tori Crain and Caleb Furlow.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, two sisters Zelma Robbins and Gladys Bannaster and four brothers Lee Vaughn, Rabrum Vaughn Sr., Clem Vaughn and Clyde Vaughn.

Irene was a member of the Christopher-Greenwood United Methodist Church for many years.

Charles Harding – Thompsonville, IL

Charles Harding, 90, of Thompsonville, passed away at 3:55 a.m., on Monday, April 19, 2021, at Herrin Hospital.

He was born on December 4, 1930, to Charles and Mertel (Cranndel) Harding in Gary, IN. Charles worked as a head paymaster and general clerk for the railroad. He married Patricia J. Klasner and she preceded him in death.

Charles was a loving father and grandfather. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, gardening and spending time with his grandchildren.

Charles is survived by his three daughters, Edith Flannigan of Thompsonville, Yvonne (Kim) Grace Wohlfeil of Benton and Teresa (Eddie) Fredrick of Thompsonville; five grandchildren, Charity (Drew Henson) Wohlfeil, Aaron (Melinda) Carrol, James Schwei, Sherri Heist, Stacey (Jerry) Sanders; one sister, Twila Blankenbaker; one brother, Gary Milton Harding and many great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Charles William and Mertel Grace Harding and his wife, Patricia J. Harding.

Anthony “Buddy” Velasco – Christopher, IL

Anthony “Buddy” Velasco, 84, passed away on Monday April 19, 2021 at the Memorial Hospital of Carbondale. Buddy was born to Tony and Rose Velasco on October 12, 1936.

Buddy is survived by his wife Beverly Velasco, four children, twelve grandchildren and eight great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents and one son. There will be a celebration of life at a later date.
