Pastor Rick Warren: God Designed Us for More Than This Earth

God Designed Us for More Than This Earth

“We fix our eyes not on what is seen, but on what is unseen. For what is seen is temporary, but what is unseen is eternal” (2 Corinthians 4:18 NIV).

God created us to live in heaven with him for eternity. Heaven is our home, not Earth. That’s why we sometimes experience discontentment and dissatisfaction in life. We’re not completely happy here because we’re not supposed to be! Otherwise, we might think we can live without God. He created us to long for something much better — a home is heaven with him.A fish would never be happy living on land, because it was made for water. An eagle could never feel satisfied if it wasn’t allowed to fly. You will never feel completely satisfied on Earth, because you were made for more. You will have happy moments here, but nothing compared with what God has planned for you.

This is also why some of God’s promises seem unfulfilled, some prayers seem unanswered, and some circumstances seem unfair. But this is not the end of the story.

Realizing that life on Earth is just temporary should radically alter your values. Eternal values, not temporal ones, should be the deciding factor for your decisions. As C. S. Lewis observed, “All that is not eternal is eternally useless.”

The Bible tells us to “fix our eyes not on what is seen, but on what is unseen. For what is seen is temporary, but what is unseen is eternal” (2 Corinthians 4:18 NIV).

FCN Daily Bible Verse

Do not be deceived: God cannot be mocked. A man reaps what he sows. The one who sows to please his sinful nature, from that nature will reap destruction; the one who sows to please the Spirit, from the Spirit will reap eternal life. Let us not become weary in doing good, for at the proper time we will reap a harvest if we do not give up.

Principles for Personal Change: New Thinking

Principles for Personal Change: New Thinking

“Instead, there must be a spiritual renewal of your thoughts and attitudes” (Ephesians 4:23 NLT).

Change requires new thinking. In order to change, we must learn about God’s truth and start making good choices, but we also must change the way we think. We’ve talked about this before: The battle over sin starts in your mind, not in your behavior. The way you think determines the way you feel, and the way you feel determines the way you act. If you want to change the way you act, you start by changing the way you think. In addition, if you want to change the way you feel, you must start with the way you think.

Think – Feel – Act

For instance, I can say, “I need to love my kids more,” but that isn’t going to work. Or someone can say, “I need to love my spouse more,” but that isn’t going to work. You can’t fight your way into a feeling. You must change the way you think about your kids, about your husband, about your wife, and that will change the way you feel, which will then change the way you act. The Bible says, “There must be a spiritual renewal of your thoughts and attitudes” (Ephesians 4:23 NLT).

Let me sum it up this way: You are not what you think you are, but rather, what you think, you are. The battle for sin, the battle to deal with those defects in your life that you don’t like — it starts in your mind. If you want to change anything in your behavior or anything in your emotions, you start with your thoughts and your attitude.

The renewal of your mind is related to the word “repentance.” I know repentance is a dirty word for a lot of people. They think it means something bad, something you don’t really want to do, something painful. They think of a guy standing on a street corner with a sign that says, “Repent. The world’s about to end.”

Repentance has nothing to do with your behavior. It is about changing your mind, learning to think differently. “Repent” simply means to make a mental U-turn. It’s something you do in your mind, not with your behavior. Changing the way you think will then affect your emotions and affect your behavior.

When I repent, I make a mental U-turn. I turn from guilt to forgiveness. I turn from purposelessness to purpose in life. I turn from no hope to new hope. I turn from frustration to freedom. I turn from darkness to light. I turn from hell to heaven. I turn from hatred to love.

I also change the way that I think about God. He’s not mad at me; I’m deeply flawed, but I’m deeply loved. I change the way I think about you, I change the way I think about my kids, and I change the way I think about my wife. I change the way I think about the world, I change the way I think about the economy, and I change the way I think about my past, my present, and my future.

So being renewed in your mind means more than changing the way you think about God and Jesus; it also means you change the way you think about your own defects. The Bible tells us, “Let this same attitude and purpose and [humble] mind be in you which was in Christ Jesus” (Philippians 2:5 AMP).

Talk It Over

  • What do you think of when you hear the word “repentance”?
  • Where in your life do you need to take the first step of changing the way you think?
  • We discussed turning from guilt to forgiveness, from purposelessness to purpose in life, from no hope to new hope. What type of “mental U-turn” do you most need in your life?

I have spoken with many farmers in the county and they all seem to have been able to plant a considerable amount of acres of corn and beans over the past couple of weeks. Even with the rain that we received over the weekend they were not discouraged. With more planting in the near future then the wait begins to see what happens in the fall.

The Illinois Farm Bureau anticipates that the Senate farm bill process will soon get underway. We’re working to get our priorities included in the Senate bill and will become increasingly engaged in that process as it moves forward. Our goal remains getting a farm bill passed that reflects Farm Bureau priorities through both the House and Senate before the current farm bill expires September 30.

As part of a 33-year effort to protect sensitive lands and improve water quality and wildlife habitat on private lands, the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) will resume accepting applications for the voluntary Conservation Reserve Program (CRP). Eligible farmers, ranchers, and private landowners can sign up at their local Farm Service Agency (FSA) office between June 4 and Aug. 17, 2018.

Syngenta has reached a settlement in the lawsuit concerning Agrisure Viptera and Agrisure Duracade corn seed that was sold to farmers who unknowingly purchased it before it was approved by China. The amount eligible claimants will receive depends on various factors, including the amount of the claimants’ interests in US corn priced for sale between September 15, 2013 and April 10, 2018. If you are interested in more information on this please call the office at 435-3616.

According to USA Today Bayer will retire the Monsanto name this week as the company closes its $63 billion buyout of the St. Louis-based seed and pesticide maker. “Bayer will remain the company name,” Bayer said in a statement. “Monsanto will no longer be a company the name. The acquired products will retain their brand names and become part of the Bayer portfolio.”

With summer here I just want to remind our members that we have many discounts – along with local savings at Holiday World and Six Flags – if you are a Farm Bureau member you can log onto the Abenity App and see all of the discounts available to you. The saving are tremendous. If you are not a Farm Bureau member then join today and discover how much you can save. Just call the office at 435-3616 for more information.

Remember we are farmers working together. If we can help let us know.

Pastor Rick Warren: God’s Power to Keep Going

God’s Power to Keep Going

“I’m a mess. I’m nothing and have nothing; make something of me. You [God] can do it; you’ve got what it takes” (Psalm 40:17 The Message).

The Bible tells us that God always finishes what he starts: “God, who began the good work within you, will continue his work until it is finally finished” (Philippians 1:6 NLT). It doesn’t say, “God might finish it.” It doesn’t say, “God hopes to finish it.” It says God will finish it. What does that mean?It means if you have really given your life to Jesus Christ — if you’ve opened yourself up to God and said, “Christ, be number one in my life” — you are going to make it to heaven. There’s no doubt about it. Case closed. Done deal. You are going to make it across the finish line because it doesn’t depend upon your performance; it depends upon God’s sustaining grace. The only question is how you finish the race. You know as well as I do that some people finish a race poorly while other people finish a race well.

I don’t want you to just get into heaven. I don’t want you to just get across the finish line. I want to help you finish the race of life well. I want you to enjoy life, the abundant life — to figure out what God made you for and then do it.

How can you be sure you’re going to finish the race of life? Because of God’s sustaining grace. God doesn’t want to just save you. He wants to sustain you through life. He wants you to make it.

What is sustaining grace?

Sustaining grace is the power to keep on going when you feel like giving up. It’s the power to do the right thing when you don’t feel like doing the right thing.

There are many pitfalls in the marathon race of life. But regardless of what you go through, no matter what you face this year, you can count on God’s sustaining grace.

“My purpose in writing is to encourage you and assure you that what you are experiencing is truly part of God’s grace for you. Stand firm in this grace” (1 Peter 5:12 NLT).

Talk It Over

  • Why do we so often try to “just make it” through the week when God wants us to experience an abundant life?
  • How has God’s sustaining grace helped you endure a trial in your life?
  • In what situation do you need God’s help to stand firm? How are you asking God to help sustain you?

Daily Hope

You Have Direct Access to God

5

“You come to him as living stones, a spiritual house that is being built into a holy priesthood” (1 Peter 2:5 GW).

God says that you are a priest. Depending on your background, that may be scary or confusing. Peter is saying that the two benefits that priests have are now available to everyone who is a believer.

In the Old Testament, priests did two things:

  1. They had the right, privilege, and responsibility to go directly to God. They could pray and talk to God, worship, and fellowship with God. Everybody else had to go through a priest.
  2. The priest had the privilege and responsibility of representing God to the people and ministering to the needs of other people (serving).

Those are the very two things that are true of you when you become a believer.

The Bible says that when Jesus died on the cross, there was a veil in the temple that separated the Holy of Holies, where God’s Spirit was, from where man was. Only priests could go behind that veil once a year. When Jesus died on the cross, God ripped that veil — about 70 feet — from top to bottom, symbolizing that there no longer was a barrier.

You now have direct access to God. You don’t have to pray through anybody else. You don’t have to confess through anybody else. You don’t have to fellowship with God through anybody else. Read your Bible, talk with the Lord, and fellowship directly with him.

You have also been gifted for ministry to serve other people. Every Christian is a minister — not a pastor, but a minister. Anytime you use your talents and gifts to help others, you are ministering.

He saved us and chose us for his holy work not because we deserved it but because that was his plan long before the world began” (2 Timothy 1:9 TLB). Why did God save you? So you could serve him. A non-serving Christian is a contradiction.

How do you know what your ministry is? Look at your talents, gifts, and abilities. When you use those talents and gifts to help other people, that’s called ministry — nothing fancy or scary about it. It’s just helping others. Can you be a priest in a sales office? You bet you can. Can you be a priest as an accountant? Of course. Driving a truck? Sure. Anytime you’re helping other people in God’s name, you’re ministering.

Talk It Over

  • How are you using your gifts and abilities to serve God and others?
  • How have you grown closer to Jesus through other believers’ ministry and service to you?
  • How do you make the most of your status as a priest? Do you take full advantage of your direct access to God?

A Word for Today

NEVER TOO FAR GONE

READ 2 CHRONICLES 14:1 THROUGH 16:14; JOHN 9:1-23

During times of failure and weakness, we can convince ourselves that God could never forgive us. We imagine that our sins, addictions, and shortcomings have created an unbridgeable distance between us and God.

Can we ever be too far gone for God to save us? Can we sin so terribly that God will forsake us forever? Of course not.

After a period of idol worship, King Asa of Judah feared God’s judgment. The prophet Azariah came to King Asa and gave him good news.

“The Lord is with you when you are with Him. If you seek Him, He will be found by you, but if you forsake Him, He will forsake you” (2 Chronicles 15:2).

These are beautiful words of comfort and hope. They are words that can give us courage to stand up to seek God when we fail. They gave Asa courage to go out into his lands and destroy the idols that led his people astray. Let us take courage in this promise as well.

Thought for Today: God is never far from us—He is always ready to save us where we are.

Pastor Rick Warren: God Makes You New

God Makes You New

“Your name will no longer be Jacob …. From now on you will be called Israel” (Genesis 32:28 NLT).

You don’t have to stay the same! In conversion, we’re given a new identity. Look at Jacob in the book of Genesis. Once Jacob confesses his manipulative behavior, God gives him a new identity.

Notice that three things happen:

God gives Jacob a brand new identity (Genesis 32:28). Essentially, God says, “I know you’ve blown it. I know you’re conniving, but I see in you a prince. Beneath all your emotional hang-ups, all your insecurities, all the stuff you don’t want anybody else to know, I see a prince.” God is saying that today to you: “Beneath all of your sins and hang-ups, I see a princess/prince. You can be something great. You can be what I made you to be.”

God blesses Jacob/Israel (Genesis 32:29). Deep down, we desperately want God’s blessing. If we want God’s blessing, we have to take the steps God requires of us.

God gave Jacob/Israel a limp (Genesis 32:31). Remember, when they wrestled, God dislocated Jacob’s hip. Jacob walked away with a limp, and it served as a daily reminder to depend upon God.

God does his deepest work in your life when he deals with your identity — who you are and the way you see yourself. You will always tend to act according to the way you think about yourself. So God does his deepest changes in your life by changing the way you see yourself.

He says, “Let me show you how I see you.” When you see yourself the way God sees you, it’s going to change your life.

Talk It Over

  • Have you been asking God to bless you? If so, how have you made yourself available to hear his instructions so that you can take the steps he requires of you?
  • How do you look different when you see yourself through God’s point of view?
