Miners Drop Heartbreaker In Extras To Joliet

MARION, IL –  The Southern Illinois Miners got two home runs on Sunday from Kurt Wertz, Jr. and a game-tying, two-run shot in the bottom of the ninth by Ryan Lashley, but Rock Shoulders’ two-run home run in the tenth inning gave the Joliet Slammers an 8-6, extra-inning win at Rent One Park to complete a series sweep.

Miners DH Kurt Wertz, Jr., who homered twice in last nights game

The Miners grabbed an early advantage in the first inning as Lashley hit an RBI single following a walk by Craig Massey and a single by Nolan Earley. Later in the inning, with the bases loaded, a wild pitch by Shane Bryant brought home Earley and made it 2-0. Joliet would score four runs in the next two innings, three of which were unearned thanks to three Miners errors. With the score 4-2, Wertz clubbed a home run over the right field wall leading off the bottom of the fourth for his first hit of the year after being activated from the injured list on Sunday.

Ridge Hoopii-Haslam got that run back leading off the next inning with a solo shot of his own to make the score 5-3, and the Slammers would go ahead 6-3 on an RBI single by Chaz Meadows with two outs in the sixth inning. Wertz again led off the bottom half of the frame with a solo home run, this time to left field, to make the score 6-4. The ballgame then stayed 6-4 through the late innings as neither team could score off the other’s bullpen. Southern Illinois loaded the bases with none out in the eighth, but three straight strikeouts by Danny Concepcion held them off the board.

In the ninth, Earley tripled with one out down the right field line, setting up Lashley, who homered to left field off Joliet closer Confesor Lara to tie the game at 6-6. That sent the game to extra innings, and in the tenth, after a diving catch by Lindley in right-center field robbed Juan Silva for the first out, Edwin Gomez doubled and went to third on a flyout. With two down in the inning, Shoulders then hit a go-ahead, two-run homer to right field to give the Slammers the lead, and eventually the win when Southern Illinois got the tying run on base in the bottom half of the inning with nobody out, but failed to score.

Lashley went 2-for-5 with three RBIs, while Wertz, Massey and Earley had two hits apiece, with Wertz homering twice in the game, but it was not enough as the visiting Slammers swept the weekend series in Marion. Southern Illinois will take the field next on Wednesday night at 6:05 p.m. for a doubleheader against the Traverse City Beach Bums. Ethan Gibbons and a starter to be named will pitch for the Miners while Reinaldo Lopez and Augie Gallardo will toe the rubber for Traverse City.

50 INFLUENCERS OF REND LAKE COLLEGE: TIM WILLS, ALWAYS THERE WITH THE ASSIST

Reece Rutland – Sports Information Director, Rend Lake College

INA, IL –  Every year thousands of students make the commitment to come to Rend Lake College. Out of all those students, a few get the opportunity to represent the college on Warrior athletic teams. From that pool of former athletes, a select few have returned to Ina to coach or teach. But, only one man can claim the titles of student, athlete, coach, professor and athletic director.

Tim Wills in the classroom at RLC (photo provided)

Tim Wills (RLC Class of 1984) started his journey at RLC as a two-year starter on a historic basketball team assembled by then-coach Mitch Haskins. The Benton native attended RLC on a Presidential Scholarship. As a player, Wills and his team found notable success, setting 10 school records. For its achievement, the 83-84 team was inducted into the RLC Sports Hall of Fame, Class of 2017. For his part, Wills earned All-GRAC, All-Region and “Most Dedicated” laurels.

As a Warrior, Wills put up some impressive RLC career numbers. He averaged 8.2 ppg (549 points), 44.1% FG (189-429), 81.4% FT (171-210), 112 rebounds (1.7 avg.), 443 assists (6.6) and 156 steals / recoveries (2.3).

Like many of his teammates, Wills transferred on to a four-year institution to continue his athletic career. He transitioned to Southern Illinois University Edwardsville, and led the Cougars in assists during the 1987-88 season with 127, averaging 4.5 per game, good for the 10th best single-season total in school history. He also sits at number 19 on the list of career assist leaders with 190 over his two seasons at SIUE.

It was with the Southern Illinois University system that Wills got his start in coaching, acting as an assistant at both Edwardsville and Carbondale under his two previous mentors.

He made his return to RLC in 1992 to take over head coaching responsibilities for the Warrior team he once played for and to begin a teaching career in Health and Physical Education. He also began his first stint as the college’s athletic director.

Wills acted as men’s head coach for 18 seasons (1992-2010).

His coaching highlights include his 1995-96 team that won 20 games and attained its highest national ranking at No. 5 in Division II and produced a Warrior first . . . a First-Team All-America designee in 22-year-old sophomore Bryant Lowe (Cairo). His 06-07 squad ran away to a 21-10 record and managed 8-8 in a conference monopolized by Division I opponents. The team netted three players on the All-Region XXIV D-II list.

All of this happened with Wills coming on board right after one of the most turbulent times for the program. Just the year before his arrival, the Warriors were placed on probation and dropped to Division II. An estimated two-thirds of the team’s games were played against D-I rivals with many more resources at their disposal.

In the head athletic office, Wills served from 1992-2008, stepping down for two years before returning to the role in 2010 where he remains today. He has continued to teach uninterrupted since he joined the college professionally 25 years ago.

As a first-year A.D., he was responsible for a No. 1 ranked Men’s Golf team that finished third in the NJCAA D-II Finals; a Softball squad that won its first Region XXIV crown and advanced to the National Finals; a Baseball team that was 35-14 and ranked in the Top 30, and a Women’s Basketball squad that netted GRAC “Coach of Year” honors for former assistant Ronnie Ressel.

As an educator and athletic director, Wills helped build the Learning Enhancement Center (LEC) on campus. The LEC was established to provide academic support and transition services to students. It acts as the central resource for academic help on Rend Lake College’s campus. Tutors are available to help students in core subject areas and workshops are conducted to provide transition assistance.

From an athletic standpoint, the LEC promotes success among RLC student-athletes who are required to attend study sessions there. It is a proactive tool that has helped develop skills off of the court, field and track for many Warriors. Numerous athletes and teams at the college have been designated Academic All-Americans by the National Junior College Athletic Association under Wills tenure.

This isn’t the first time Wills has been recognized for his contributions.

He was honored with the Rend Lake College “Alumnus of the Year” award in 1996 for his accomplishments, hard work and dedication to the students and athletes of RLC.

“I can’t describe the feeling,” said Wills, when he received the honor. “You don’t expect to get anything like that . . . definitely flattering. It is most gratifying, considering it is only given once a year, there are many deserving individuals who could be considered and it is coming from a college for which I have the utmost respect.”

A Williamson County plane crash survivor recalls a terrifying day.

A flight instructor explains how he survived a deadly plane crash at the Williamson County Airport.

“The Lord has done absolute miracles. It was a miracle from the very beginning.” says Todd Greiner.

One year ago Saturday, Greiner took off with student John Alleman on a fateful flight.

“People don’t appreciate what the Lord has done unless they appreciate how bad things were,” says Greiner.

On June 10, 2016, around 4:30 p.m., fight instructor Todd Greiner took off for a training flight with long-time pilot and friend, John Alleman.

The two performed what he calls an “engine out” maneuver, when he says something went wrong.

Last Tuesday, at 9:15 a.m. the staff and medical personnel at Franklin Hospital, in Benton got to test their abilities to deliver urgent medical care under one of the worst possible scenarios—a simulated F4 category tornado.

The exercise briefing read, “At 0810 this morning Du Quoin, IL was struck by an F4 category tornado. Marshall Browning Hospital in Du Quoin, sustained significant damage requiring assistance by other hospitals in treatment of injured and immediate relocation of their inpatients.”

The idea was to treat the simulation as if it were a real emergency event, complete with a real-time control room and a briefing identical to what would have been released to local radio stations, online local news sources if such a disaster were to occur.

Cardinals Launch #CardsRatPack Campaign to Honor Whitey Herzog

Campaign to Celebrate the White Rat & His Pack of Players with a Pack of 24 Animated Baseball Cards

Press Release by the St. Louis Cardinals

The St. Louis Cardinals are using yesterday’s 37th anniversary of Whitey Herzog being named the manager of the team to launch the #CardsRatPack fan engagement campaign to honor the man that fans lovingly refer to as the White Rat.

Whitey Herzog, as Cardinal Manager. photofile.com

The unique social media-based campaign, which will center on a pack of 24 illustrated baseball cards that will come to life later this season as a weekly cartoon series on the team’s digital and social media platforms, will formally commence with a special #CardsRatPack ceremony honoring the 1982 World Series Champion and Hall of Fame Manager prior to tonight’s game.

“The #CardsRatPack campaign is designed to celebrate the White Rat and his amazing pack of players that defined one of the most extraordinary eras in Cardinals history,” said Ron Watermon, Vice-President of Communications for the St. Louis Cardinals. “We hope fans will enjoy the cartoon series and will actively engage with the team to celebrate Whitey and Whiteyball.”

While the fan engagement portion of the social media campaign commences today, the #CardsRatPack animated series will debut on Wednesday July 12th, the first of a dozen #WhiteyBall Wednesdays. Each week, for twelve weeks, the team will release two episodes via social media on Wednesdays and Fridays. In addition to the animated series, the team will release a limited number of corresponding illustrated #CardsRatPack baseball cards.

Each #CardsRatPack cartoon and baseball card is designed to convey an important part of the amazing story of the New Athens, Illinois native and the extraordinary pack of players he managed. Fans will need to stay tuned to the team’s social media to learn how they can collect the #CardsRatPack cards.

The team is encouraging fans to show their affection for the White Rat all season long by sharing video memories, photographs and other messages via social media using the hashtag #CardsRatPack.

As part of the #CardsRatPack campaign, the team is sponsoring a one-of-a-kind video contest asking fans to share their favorite Whiteyball memory for a chance to have their personal video transformed into a professionally animated cartoon that would punctuate the #CardsRatPack series.    As part of the campaign, the team is also raising money for the Whitey Herzog Youth Foundation to help them further their work to teach kids the game of baseball.

While the #CardsRatPack campaign follows the Cardinals’ social media based fan engagement tributes to Stan Musial (Stand for Stan), Mike Shannon (#LikeMike), Red Schoendienst (#LoveRed2), and Lou Brock (#StLisLou), this effort will integrate creative storytelling along the lines of the team’s prior #NestFlix fan entertainment projects on social media, as well as their #CardsFanFlix video engagement, with the intent to not only engage fans, but also entertain, educate and connect multiple generations.

To produce the #CardsRatPack illustrations and cartoons, the Cardinals are working with Lion Forge Labs, a local creative services company that specializes in storytelling using comics, graphic novels, animation and gaming.

Partnering on these videos with the St. Louis Cardinals to help honor Whitey Herzog has been a highlight for us,” said David Steward II, CEO of Lion Forge Labs. “It’s a fun, creative way to tell his story, and we are grateful to be part of the #CardsRatPack campaign team.”

Mo says enough!

by Steve Dunford

The Press Conference at 1 Stadium Plaza this afternoon still has social media, abuzz.  This has been one of the most ugliest stretches of Cardinal baseball that I can remember.

I take a daily walk.  Today I left my phone at home.  I get home and I have a few texts and a few messages on Facebook.  Over anyone, when I receive one from my son it takes top priority.  He said the Cardinals have called a press conference for 2:00 p,m,  I think something is going down big.   I got home about 2:30.

Kolten Wong last night, playing for the Peoria Chiefs. He homered in last night’s game. Thank you for Chris Shannon from Canton giving me Wong updates. (Allison Rhodes – Peoria Chiefs photo.

I figured Peralta would be released, that was no surprise.  I figured it would happen when Kolten Wong was activated.   I was wondering what was going down.  I was wondering if Matheny was fired, of if a trade was made for a bat.

Every St. Louis media source, Facebook and Twitter was very slow to load, especially the Post Dispatch and Fox Sports Midwest.  I provided a link for Fox 2 and you can hear John Mozeliak’s opening remarks.

As a GM, Mo has grown on me.  I used to call him the bow tied geek.  Even though I cried like a baby when it happened, he used his head in letting Albert Pujols walk.  Sometimes he wins doing this and sometimes he loses, but signing players long term, buying out some of their arbitration years and free agency years is frugal.

I read several St. Louis media sources that covered the press conference.  Most stories had three basic points to them.

1.  It is not time to blow it up yet.

I know a lot of people whether it be the fans or even some in the press has called for Mike Matheny to be fired.  There were significant changes, but they were not earth shattering ones.  I think you could see Randall Grichuk traded in the next few days.  It the right set of prospects is offered, I think Tommy Pham could be dealt.   Greg Garcia might go if the right deal is offered.

It is not a matter if Magnerius Sierra will be back, it is a matter of when.  I see Jose Martinez and Chad Huffman as roster putty.  They are just filling gaps in the wall right now.  They are AAAA players.  They serve their purpose of providing pop off the bench right now.

The time to blow it up will lead into the next point.

2.  We will see where were at in 4-6 weeks

This will get us to around the All-Star break.  I have learned over the years to understand Mo Speak.  If the Cards get things back together, it would be the time to go out and get a bat.  I say if they are a few games over .500, the Cardinals will be buyers.

If they are a few games below .500 they will be sellers.  Some stories used the phrase, Matheny is put on notice.

The first one that will be gone, and I would hate to see him go is Lance Lynn.  He would be the most valuable piece in a deal.   I wish the Cardinals would have locked him up long term, similar to a deal that Mike Leake received.    Lynn will make a boatload of money pitching somewhere next year.  There is the same odds of him pitching in a Cardinal uniform in 2018 if loaned out as a rental, than if he would hit the free agent market.

Second would be Trevor Rosenthal, as he approaches his third year of arbitration and would be an unrestricted free agent in 2019.  He could bring two or three prospects in a fire sale.

I am intrigued how the name Matt Carpenter is floating out there.  Mo is a genius at this.  He knows when to hold ’em and when to fold ’em.  He is a sly poker player.  He leaks some names to the St. Louis media to see a reaction.  Sometimes he makes deals that comes out of nowhere.

Two players whose contracts are up, but the Cardinals still have team control is Seung Hwan Oh, and Aledmys Diaz.  They could be packaged.

If the Cardinals are out of the race by mid July, no telling what you will see.  There might be a new sheriff in town even.

3.  Johnny Peralta was a cancer

Mo did not put it as bluntly as I did.  But he basically said that he did not have time to seek a trade because the atmosphere of the clubhouse.

The last nail in the coffin for him was refusing to take balls at 1B.  I saw the red flag go up when he entered the game as a PH in the old fashioned butt kicking on Wednesday night.  When he stayed in at third and Gyroko moved to first, I was thinking if you were serious about staying around, he would have taken over at first.  I actually hated to see him get a hit on Wednesday.  I thought it might mean a few more days.

With the changes of the coaching staff, especially the reassignment of Chirs Maloney.  We will see what happens.  This is the second time Mo put the team on notice this year.  The other being during the Yankees series.  It worked last time. Hopefully it will work again.

As a side note, everything I have written about the Cardinals, on average has been increasing over 100 views each time.  I would like to thank you.

Lets hope for a sweep of the Phillies tonight.
