McMahon throws shutout for Rangers Monday

METROPOLIS, IL-(Amanda Jarzynski – Benton Evening News Please click on link to read the full story. Here is an excerpt) Starting pitcher Ian McMahon proved that his team can rely on him whenever they need him to perform on the mound. The Benton Rangers (13-2) stood strong behind McMahon on Monday afternoon when they defeated the Patriots in a 1-run game (1-0). “It’s not easy to win down here,” said Brett Blondi, Rangers’ coach. “We played really well… Ian did a tremendous job on the mound. Scoring one was good enough today. We really have to tip our hats to Mac (Ian McMahon) for his performance. That would probably be his career best, he didn’t miss many pitches. He had an idea that he would have to be pretty good today.”

After not having played in a week due to inclement weather, the Rangerettes were challenged, but came out with a 10-2 victory over their Franklin County foes. “It really felt like we haven’t played in a week… there were times in the game when it showed,” said Ryan Miller, Rangerettes’ coach. “We played a little rusty… we hit the ball pretty well for the most part. We’re going out there and putting the ball in play which is something I’m really happy about. We’re putting pressure on the defense and we’re playing good defense ourselves.”

They also cheered for their head coach Brett Blondi who reached his 200th coaching career victory. “It’s nice. Better than losing 200, I guess,” Blondi said after the win. “We’ve been so lucky to have such good kids and support from the community, parents, administration and teachers. It’s a really nice place to coach and call home.” Blondi gave full credit of his accomplishment to the young athletes on the Rangers’ roster. “These guys are such good guys,” he said. “They pick each other up. They play with a level of maturity that I’m not used to. The guys in the past would tense up a little, but these guys play with confidence that if they make a mistake they can come back and win.”

Rangerettes win nail biter at Carmi-White Co. Friday

CARMI, IL- (Carmi Times. Please click on the link for the full story, Here is an excerpt) A challenging early-season schedule is taking a toll on the CWC Lady Bulldogs as their record dropped to 3-3 after a comeback rally fell just short in a 6-5 loss to the Benton Rangerettes on Friday. Benton opened the scoring in the top of the third with a run. CWC struck back with a two-out rally in their half of the inning when Shaelyn Perkins and Morgan Combs reached on hits. Breona Owen was hit by a pitch to fill the bases. Makynna Shaffer followed with an RBI single scoring Perkins, but Combs was thrown out at the plate attempting to score from second base. Benton added two runs in the fourth and a pair in the fifth when the Lady Bulldogs defense was unable to execute a couple of tough defensive chances which would have stopped the rally.

CARMI- (Carmi Times- Please click to read the full story. Here is an excerpt) Benton’s Zach Avery pitched all seven innings and held the CWC Bulldogs to four hits in a 4-0 win on Friday. The loss dropped the Bulldogs early-season record to 1-3. Justin Lamp got the start on the mound for the Bulldogs and pitched effectively also, but the Bulldogs were unable to give him any run support. Benton produced a run in the top of third and it appeared that the Bulldogs were about to strike back in the bottom of the inning when two-out hits by Easton Stewart and Bryce Northcott gave the Bulldogs a pair of speedy baserunners. The potential rally ended when Travis Black’s hard hit line drive was tracked down by the center fielder.

Benton subdues Eldorado 18-4 in five innings on Wednesday

ELDOROAD, IL (Amanda Jarzynski, Benton Evening News. Please click on the link to read the full story. Here is an excerpt) The Benton Rangers (4-0) baseball team showed no mercy to the Eldorado Eagles (2-3) Wednesday afternoon when the team in maroon took an 18-4 victory by slaughter rule in five innings. The host team Eagles earned only four hits throughout the game compared to the Rangers’ 13 hits (14 RBIs). “They came out and put some runs on the board, played hard, continued to add, ran the bases effectively and took advantage of their mistakes,” said Brett Blondi, Rangers’ coach. “I was happy with everybody.” But at the other end of the field, Eagles’ coach Brad Drust admitted to being slightly embarrassed by the way his team performed. “I’m not embarrassed by the score… I’m more embarrassed by our hustle today,” Drust said. “We were kind of lackadaisical in our hustle and that’s not the way we as a program play.”
