Blackcats and Bearcats battle

By BRUCE A. FASOL

A fourth quarter comeback attempt by the host Christopher Bearcats fell short Friday night.

Christopher hosted high-flying Goreville in a Black Diamond Conference game. The Goreville Blackcats were not intimidated by their surroundings in the orange clad gymnasium. They set the tone of the game by jumping out to a 13-5 first quarter lead. The half time advantage for Todd Tripp’s team was up 23-16. Five more points were tacked onto the lead after three quarters. But, in the fourth frame, Christopher outscored the Goreville squad 18-14. But, the mini-comeback fell short.

Scoring for the Bearcats:  Mercks 17, Kuh 11, Young 10, atchison 8, Towers 3.

Dayton Tripp led the visitors with 20 points including 12 off three-point shots.

‘He’s Looking Down …’

By Tom Wheeler

One of the biggest upsets of the Holiday tournaments was the Christopher Bearcats win at Sesser over No. 3 seed Waltonville. The Spartans had defeated the Bearcats in the Christopher Thanksgiving tournament 48-41 but the Cats evened the score at Sesser 47-39.

Jake Towers, junior point guard led the Cats scoring with 13 points and senior R.J.Kuh was also in double figures with 11.  Last Friday night in a game against rival Zeigler-Royalton, who was on a hot streak after winning three straight games at the Sesser tournament, the Cats won 59-36. Towers were in double figures again with 11, 6-feet-6-inch Kevin Mercks had 16 and R.J. had a double-double with 18 points and 13 rebounds. Kuh’s game brought a smile to my face.

Let me explain!

R.J.’s grandmother is Pam McGee, a close family friend, and she asked me to talk to R.J. about her son Robert who was taken from us much too early in a terrible automobile accident in 1989. Pam knew how close Robert and my son T.J were and she wanted her grandson to know about his uncle.  We sat in the garage and checked some old tapes of Robert in grade school, then went thru some scrap books of Roberts’ athletic endeavors.  I stressed to R.J. how quick his senior year would go, and no one knew what tomorrow would bring, so make the best of today. More importantly, I told him to enjoy his teammates and coaches and for him to do whatever his coach needed him to do for his team to win.

I had no idea that by mid-year R.J. would be having a game against a good team and get a double-double. At the time of our talk I looked for him to be the ‘Dennis Rodman’ type player. Guard the opponents best player, rebound every shot, dive on the floor for the loose ball and take all those charges (he gets at least one a game).

When asked about R.J.’s recent scoring, Coach Eric Stallman answered, “I talked to R.J and explained to him with every one doubling down on Merck’s, he had to be more aggressive on offense. He has been and now his confidence is at an all-time high.”

T.J. was a freshman at Illinois when we lost Robert. He put the initials R.M. on every pair of shoes he wore the next four years and at the time simply said “I think of Robert McGee every time I lace up my shoes.” In 1994 when his Bearcat jersey No. 44 was retired at CCHS, he told the audience how proud he was that his 44 would hang in the Robert McGee trophy case, named in Robert’s honor.

R.J. is one of those Bearcats all around athletes, linebacker in football, pitcher for ZRC‘s baseball team and now enjoying a senior basketball season where he has become a very valuable clog in Coach Stallman’s program. And while all this is quickly going by I want him to know “Robert is looking down R.J. and enjoying this too.”

Bearcats defeat Cobden

By Tom Wheeler

The Christopher Bearcats only led 30-26 at half time but with some deadly outside shooting they outscored the Cobden Appleknockers 21-8 in the third frame to pick up a 68-45 victory.

The win improves Christopher to 6-1 overall.

Senior guard Tyler Atchison had three of four his long range bombs during this spell while running mate Jake Towers added two more.

Going into the last quarter leading 51-34 the Cats controlled the ball and knocked down their free throws, in fact they were 9 for 9 on the game. There was only 13 fouls called on Cobden in the game and 10 on the host Cats in a very well-played game by both teams.

Junior three man Eric Young led the scoring for the Cats with 24 points, his high game this season and was joined in double figures by Atchison with 16 and Towers with 14. Other scorers were R.J. Kuh 8, Kevin Mercks 4 and Hunter Wheeler 2.

Cobden was led in scoring by senior point guard J. C. Chapman, an all-tournament selection at this year’s Thanksgiving tournament, with 11 points. 6’2” junior Tyler Lewey was also in double figures with 10 while junior Austin Flamm was close with 9 points. Other Appleknocker scorers were Josh Aspen with 6, Garrett Marks with 4, Nathan Sweitzer with 3 and Jordan Waldrop with a bucket. Cobden also shot free throws well hitting 7 of 8 attempts. With the Cats 9 for 9, and Cobden’s 7 for 8 and a total of 16 of 17 made me wonder, when was the last time you saw a high school basketball game with only one free throw missed.

Coach Jeremy Varnier’s JV team won their fourth game in as many outings 52 -34 to raise their record to 4-0. Christopher will return to action Friday night as they travel north to take on the Sesser-Valier Red Devils in a key Black Diamond Conference match up.

Bearcats defeat Hamilton County, improve to 7-1

By Tom Wheeler

Coach Eric Stallman’s Christopher Bearcats played their third game of the week, all with the same results — wins. The Cats defeated the Hamilton County Foxes 52-40 at home on Saturday night to give then a 7-1 record on the young season.

If anybody would have told coach Stallman before the game that his Bearcats would defeat the always tough Foxes by 12 without their leading scorer Tyler Atchison scoring a field goal, he might not have believed you, but that is what happen.  Atchison only scored three free throws but his defense on the all-south candidate of the Foxes Levi Lueke set the tone for the game. The Cats showed they are not a one man team and have five guys capable of being the leading scorer each night.

Junior Eric Young led the Cats scoring with 19 points after dropping 24 on the Foxes last year.

Christopher jumped off to a quick 12-5 first quarter lead behind eight points from junior sharp shooter Eric Young. The home team outscored the Foxes by five in the second frame to go into half time leading 26-14 as big Kevin Mercks chipped in seven of his thirteen points and Young added four charity tosses on his way to scoring 19 on the night.

The third quarter the Foxes scored 15 points but still trailed 38-29 going into the final eight minutes. It was then time for junior point guard Jake Towers to step up.  A true point guard’s job is to protect the ball and hit his free throws and Towers showed the maturity of a seasoned veteran as he knocked down 8-of-10 free throws with the game on the line.  Towers joined Young and Mercks in double figures with 13 points on the night while senior R.J.Kuh had a hustling game scoring four points including two crucial free throws early in the last frame. Freshman Haunter Wheeler and Josh Calloni saw limited action without scoring.

The game was won at the free throw line for the Bearcats who hit 19-26 (73 percent) free tosses compared to 9-18 (50 percent) for the Foxes.

Hamilton County was led in scoring by Lueke with 11 who sat out most of the last quarter with foul problems. Logan Billington scored 9, Tyler Cross 5, Baliee Gay 5, Garrett Biggerstaff 5, Nathan Anselment 3 and Travis Stevens chipped in 2.

When Fox coach Keith Welch was asked about Young’s scoring he answered “it wasn’t a surprise, he dropped 24 on us last year at Mcleansboro.”  Christopher coach Eric Stallman called the victory “a big win for us.”

The Bearcat junior varsity of Coach Jeremy Varner also won all three games this week to raise their record to 3-0 going into Tuesday night’s home game with Cobden.

Christopher wins first conference game

By Tom Wheeler

The Christopher Bearcats defeated the Elverado Falcons 63 -34 in Elkville Tuesday night in their first Black Diamond Conference game.

The Falcons jumped out to a 13-9 first quarter lead and the Cats didn’t take the lead until 5: 03 in the second quarter when Tyler Atchison stole the ball and went in for a lay-up to tie the score at 17-17. After a Falcon turnover the Cats Eric Young rebound a miss shot and scored to put his team up 19-17. Atchison, the senior All -South football player, scored seven of his game high 19 points in that quarter and the Cats went in at half time winning 27-19.

The third quarter was a display of team basketball for CCHS as four players — Atchison, Young and seniors Kevin Mercks and RJ Kuh — each scored four points.  But Elverado outscored the Cats by three in the quarter keeping the Cats lead at half down to 43-38.

With their defense turned up in the final quarter the Bearcats outscored the host 20-6 with Atchison leading the way with four field goals. This led the way for Coach Eric Stallman to clear his bench and everyone saw action. Besides Atchison’s 19, Young was also in double figures with 15 (also hit the Cats only three) as was senior center Kevin Mercks with 12. Others scoring included Kuh, 6, JT Towers 4, Josh Calloni 4, and Maurice Brown hit a free throw.

The Falcons were led in scoring by Kyle Whittington and Andrew Jeschke with 9, Kody Ellett and freshman Alec Valerius  with 4, Josh Sarenson, Tyler Funk and Eli Fennell a bucket a piece and one  free toss by Lucas Jones and  freshman Brock Barnes.

Christopher’s JV team coached by Jeremy Varner won their first game of the year 40-21 over the Falcon JV squad. An oddity was that Elverado’s JV coach is Rob Kirk, the same Rob Kirk who was CZR’s freshman defensive coach this fall in football.

Christopher takes third place in Turkey Tourney

By TOM WHEELER

Eric Stallman’s Christopher Bearcats defeated the Thompsonville Tigers 49-39 Saturday night at the 38th Christopher Thanksgiving Tournament. The Bearcats had defeated Wayne City on Monday and lost to the 2012 champions Waltonville on Wednesday while the Tigers defeated Webber Township on Tuesday and lost to the defending champions Egyptian on Friday night.

Strong play from junior guard Jake Towers, whose defense held Thompsonville’s Brady Householder to no field goals and only two free tosses, was a big key in the victory. Householder, started the tournament with 20 points in an opening win and was the “straw” that stirred the young Tiger team. Towers and senior Tyler Atchison led the Cats in scoring with 13 points each , 6-feet-6-inch senior Kevin Mercks had six, senior R.J. Kuh had 3 and junior Eric Young had 7 points while freshman Josh Calloni had 4 points and Hunter Wheeler one free throw.

The Cats jumped to 15-7 first quarter lead behind two baskets from Young and Atchison while the Tigers were having trouble with fouls as leading scorer Ryan Darnell and twin brother Lance each picked up two fouls. Both teams scored 9 each in the second frame and the Cats were up 24-16 at half.

In the third quarter at the 6:12 mark, Young led a fast break and hit Atchison with a nifty pass for a score, Towers stole the ball on the next exchange and  hit Kuh who then fed big Mercks for another great example of the Cats team work. The hosts outscored the Tigers 16-10 in this quarter as Atchison scored 7 and Calloni 4. The Tigers only got 5 shots up in the quarter because they spent so much time at the free throw line where they were 3-for-8.

In fact the free throw line is where both teams spent a large portion of the night and if you happened to go by either high school early in the morning this week there may be some early free throw shooting going on. Thompsonville shot 15-for-30 for the game while the Cats were only 18-for-39 for a 31 percent effort for a combined 69 tosses shot.

Thompsonville was led in scoring by the Darnell’s, Ryan with 14 and the left-handed Lance with 10. Others who scored were

Immediately following the championship game in which Waltonville upset the favorite Egyptian Pharaohs 57-49 the all- tournament team was announced and the Bearcats; Atchison, Mercks and Young were named as were the Tigers’ Ryan Darnell and Householder. Others selected for this honor included J.C. Chapman of Cobden, Jordan Hale and Trey Witges of Waltonville and two named for the  second year Egyptian’s Justin Prewitt and MVP Devantae Price (for the second year).

The Bearcats return to action December 4 when they travel to Elverado for their first Black Diamond Conference game. The Tigers face Elverado Nov. 27 at home.

Christopher Bearcats open Turkey Tournament with a win

Staff Report

The  Christopher Bearcats opened their 38th Turkey Tournament defeating the Wayne City Indians 59-22 Monday night.

Also scoring for the Bearcats was Jake Towers, 5 points, RJ. Kuh 7 points and Eric Young with  6 point. s Young, last year’s leading scorer was hampered with foul trouble, enabling  Christopher’s sixth man freshman Hunter Wheeler a baptism  to varsity basketball

Other Cats scoring was Maurice Brown with 3, Luke Saeger with 3 and freshman Josh Calloni and Ethan Conner with 2 points each. Also seeing action was Tony Hodge, Lane Gibbens, and Austin Williams.

Jimmy Mayberry led the Indians with 7 points.

Tom’s Turkey Tournament Trivia

By Tom Wheeler

The 38th Christopher Thanksgiving Tournament starts Monday and it sure brings back memories for this ol’ Coach. So I thought, since I’ve seen every tournament. Here is some trivia that you may or may not remember.

I’ll just ramble so try to stay with me.

Three teams have been in the tourney all 38 years: Christopher, Zeigler-Royalton and Webber Township … Galatia coached by Benton’s Don Smith won the inaugural tournament and two years later his brother Ron Smith won the tournament with Coulterville … Christopher defeated Coulterville in 84,85,and 86 in the Championship game, in 86 current Sparta athletic director Richie Williams was the Eagles coach, his starting point guard was Gary Gischer who later coached at Christopher, Williams also coached in the tournament at Elverado where  he got so excited one night he ripped the seat out of his pants … the St. Louis Cardinals Corey Bailey played in the tournament with Crab Orchard before moving to Marion for his senior year … Rodney Seips of Egyptian also played minor league baseball … the biggest star to ever attend the tournament was tennis great Jennifer Capriati, who came to see Shane Boner play (she dated Shane’s brother in California) … Logan athletic director and baseball coach Jerry Halstead played in the first tournament with Carterville when he started as a freshman … Z-R’s Matt Swalls was MVP in 1981 and teammate Sean Connor in 1983, Matts group won the tournament but Sean was the first player to win from a team that wasn’t champions (they finished fourth) … their best tourney team may have been in 1982 but the Tornadoes were busy winning the IHSA Class A state championship in football in Bloomington as  all five basketball starters played football … Bruce Weber, coach at Kansas State, came to the tourney to scout Egyptian’s Dana Ford when he was at SIU … Current CCHS freshman coach Rick Cook was 12-0 as varsity coach in his four tournaments … my wife Lynda sure loves Turkey week as there are NO suppers prepared that week, I’m usually found in the great hospitality room along with many ‘regulars’ … CCHS revealed a beautiful new portable floor for the 77-78 season but this year’s floor won’t take a back door to that one …

Looking back I can’t believe how many of my ex-teammates coached in the tournament like John Kretz, Rick Cook,(fast pitch) Ed Belva,Steve Strickland, Wendell Wheeler, Russ Hobbs, Mike Henson, Wes Choate, Nick Laur(slow pitch) Cliff Davis, Ken Dillingham,  (McKendree basketball) Roger Yates (Coal Belt baseball) and Don Gines (McLeansboro Jr. High basketball) … Mt. Vernon legend Doug Creel coached in the tournament at Thompsonville and his best player was current West Frankfort Lady Red Birds coach Matt Hampelman … ZR’S superintendent George Wilkerson played in the tournament as did CCHS’s super Rich Towers (MVP in 86) … Varsity coaches who played in the tournament include CCHS coaches Eric Stallman, Jeff Minor, Jeff Gossett, and Gary Gischer, ZR’S Quinn Laird, Matt Morgan, Jamie Moyers and Brent Kreid, Thompsonville’s Brandon Chapman and Brock Harris … now it’s time for more trivia from the 2012 tournament and with six members of the all-tournament team returning, including 2011 MVP Devantae Price of defending champion Egyptian, it should bring more great basketball to kick off the 2012-23 season.
