Yesterday’s high school baseball action

In Boys Baseball, Z-R-C  defeats Vienna 2-1 in nine innings.  Aaron Abrahamsen with a ground ball error that scores Steven Anderson to win it. Gabe Schimpf and Anderson with two hits. Luke Garver was outstanding in relief with 5 no hit innings to get the win. 13-4 now on the season.

Z-R-C takes the short road trip to Bill McKee Field this afternoon to take on the West Frankfort Redbirds.  I will be there to cover both teams this afternoon.

Ian McMahon pitches six shutout innings to give Benton an 8-0 win over Harrisburg. There is a link with the game story on the website and Facebook page to the Benton Evening News Story.

W-S-V- picks up a 10-3 Midland Trail conference win over the Cisne Lions yesterday afternoon.

West Frankfort at Murphysboro was rained out yesterday.  There is no makeup date.

The Thompsonville Tigers game against Pope County yesterday and Hardin County Thursday has been postponed.  There were several players out of town for spring break.

Recent High School Baseball action

Z-R-C picks up a pair of wins Saturday.  First they defeat Johnston City 11-6.  Nick Hale with the win. Steven Anderson, Shane McCowen and Bryce Pratt all with two hits. Pratt with  three RBI’s and Anderson drove in two runs.

In game two Gabriel Motsinger pitches a shutout as the Tornadoes down the Crab Orchard Trojans, 8-0.  Kaeleb Pedigo has three hits on the afternoon, Steven Anderson and Luke Garver with two each.

Z-R-C improves two 12-4 on the season and scheduled to have a home game with the Joppa Rangers at 4:30 this afternoon, weather permitting.

The Waltonville-Sesser-Valier Spartans go on the road to pick up an 8-5 road win over the Odin Eagles in Midland Trail Conference play Saturday.

On Thursday the Benton Rangers pick up a home SIRR Ohio Conference Win at Benton 17-7.

Redbird reliever Brendan Johnson pitches 1 2/3 innings to pick the victory in a come from behind win over Harrisburg Thursday.

Also on Thursday afternoon, Brendan Johnson comes out of the Redbird bullpen and picks up the win, in a come from behind victory over the Harrisburg Bulldogs 10-7.

The Rangers and Redbirds are slated for a 4:30 start this afternoon at Bill McKee field, weather permitting.

In high school girls softball the  Benton Rangerettes will be facing the West Frankfort Redbirds at 4:30 weather permitting.

Benton Lions’ Club, Rend Lake College host 39th annual All-Star Games

The Benton Lions Club and Rend Lake College teamed up Friday night to host the 39th annual Basketball All-Star Games. Four boys teams and two girls team–made up of 107 young athletes from all over Southern Illinois high schools–took to the court for a night of fun, no-pressure basket“It was a lot of fun,” said Sesser-Valier’s Hannah Garacia. “It’s nice to know that you’re coming in with nothing at stake… it’s just everyone having a good time playing basketball.”The athletes also competed in 3-point tournaments and the boys took part in a slam dunk challenge.

Several Franklin County basketball players are Lions Club All Stars

In what was one of the original All-Star games in the state of Illinois, the 39th Annual Lions Club All Star Games will be played tomorrow night at James “Hummer” Waugh gym on the campus of Rend Lake College.

Nathan Wheeler, Coordinator of Digital Media & Marketing for Rend Lake College had this to say about the event.  “There was such an overwhelming response to the club’s guest list this year that it has forced a change in format. Instead of one boys Purple vs Gold game, there will be two boys games (30 minutes each), featuring two different Purple and Gold teams and 2 game MVP’S. The girls format is unchanged from previous years.”

“The event will include all the staples from previous years — Dunk Contest, Three Point Contests, Apparel & MVPs.”

Playing in the girls game from Franklin County are the following: Alexis Abney, Mikayla Abney, Ally Gisher and Kaylee Pedigo from Benton; Hannah Garascia, Jaylin Hayley; and Taylor Frank from Sesser-Valier-Waltonville; Maddie Gossett and Megan Wilson from Christopher; and Morgan Griffith from West Frankfort.

Playing in the boys games from Franklin County are the following: Austin Wills and Timmy Henson from Benton; Noah Allen and Austin Glodich from West Frankfort; Kaeleb Pedigo and Gabe Schimpf from Christopher and Brendan Whiting from Zeigler-Royalton.

Schimpf has 10 K’s in as the Tornadoes beat Seneca

ZEIGLER, IL-  Gabe Schimpf, coming of a three homer day against W-S-V Saturday, strikes out 10, and goes 2-3 at the plate as Z-R-C defeats Seneca 4-2 in high school baseball action yesterday.  Dalton Humphrey picks up the save for the Tornadoes.

Along with Schimpf’s two hits, Shane McKowen, Kaleb Pedigo, and Steven Anderson have a base hit each for Z-R-C.

The Tornadoes travel 10 miles south on 148 to face the Herrin Tigers at 4:30 this afternoon.

Z-R-C defeats Webber Township 6-1 yesterday

ZEIGLER-  The Z-R-C Tornadoes defeated the Webber Township Trojans 6-1 in girls softball action yesterday.

Savannah Sherman led the way for the Tornadoes offensively going 2-3 and driving in three runs.  Trinity Noto went 2-3 drove in two and had a triple. Zoe Hudson went 2-3 with a triple and and an RBI.

Z-R-C will make the short trip to West Frankfort on Thursday to take on the Redbirds.

Z-R-C beats Meridian….improves to 5-0

ZEIGLER-  The Tornadoes exploded for nine runs in the fourth and fifth innings to beat the Meridian Bobcats 11-2 in high school baseball action yesterday afternoon.

Gabe Schimpf goes 3-5 from the plate and drives in two;  Kaleb Pedigo 2-3 with two RBI’s, and Steven Anderson goes 2-4 on the afternoon.

Bryce Pratt picks up the win on the mound for Z-R-C.  TJ Nichols took the loss for Meridian and picks up one of their two hits.

The Tornadoes host the Woodlawn Cardinals this afternoon at 4:30

Here is how I am going to handle baseball-softball coverage this season.  I am going to write something similar to this throughout the season.  Playing basically every day, it is a different animal than football or basketball.

BENTON-  Ian McMahon goes 2-3 at the plate, Braden Picklesmeyer 1-3 and Parker Williams 1-2  as the Rangers beat the Mules 5-4 yesterday at Evalodi field.

Hamilton Page picked up the win yesterday as Benton improves to 3-0.

ZEIGLER-  Victoria Flowers and Madi Severs went 2-3 at the plate, Williams and Hoppers drove in a run, as the Lady Tornadoes win a shortened contest.

Megan Wilson picked up the win for Z-R-C.

West Frankfort 9  Crab Orchard 0

WEST FRANKFORT – The Lady Redbirds exploded for six runs in the bottom of the sixth, in yesterday’s defeat of the Lady Trojans.

Allie Herron goes 3-3 at the plate with a pair of triples and a doubles, Mati Hampleman also has a perfect day at the plate.  Jenna Herron goes 2-3 with a double.  Sydney Chambliss has two hits also.

Stephanie Tucker (who also was the winning pitcher), Maddy Britton, and Rhiann Lucas also hit safely for WF.

After some games getting pushed back a day or two because of the weather,  high school baseball was off to a chilly start around the region.

In Evalodi field yesterday Parker Williams goes 3-3 at the plate, Tyson Houghland 3-4, and Hamilton Page 2-3 as Benton defeats Centralia 17-7.  Page picks up the win for the Rangers.

At the Webber Township Tournament Gabe Schimpf goes 3-4 at the plate and pitches a shutout, as Z-R-C defeats NCOE 9-0.

W-S-V also picks up a win at Webber yesterday as Seth Boles goes 4-4, hits a grand slam and drives in seven runs as the Spartans defeat the Odin Eagles 12-10.

Whiting in Country Financial Three Point Showdown at Peoria

Zeigler-Royalton’s Brendan Whiting will be participating in the Country Financial Three Point Showdown this weekend at the Class 1A/2A State Tournament at Peoria this weekend.

On the girls side of things, there were three young ladies advanced to state in Bloomington from Franklin County; West Frankfort’s Megan Berry and Cali Wright in 2A and Galatia-Thompsonville’s Kassidy Rizor in 1A.

Whiting 1,000 pointsBrendan eclipsed the 1,000 point mark for his career in a game against Sesser-Valier.  This is what Z-R Coach Matt Morgan had to say about his playing career.   “Looking back and seeing the 5’4 110 pound freshman ,walk into our summer workout and knowing how he developed into the player that he has is absolutely amazing. I don’t know if I know of a kid that has put more effort and time into their game than Brendan has. The kid is a gym rat that loves the game more than anyone can understand. I am excited to see what the future holds for him.”

Whiting earned the right to go to Peoria after being on of the to shooters at the Norris-City Omaha Sectional.  His team mate Nolan Domenick, as well as Chirstopher’s Bradley Young advanced from the Crab Orchard Regional.

Along with Whiting and Domenick, Steven Anderson and Cam Newton participated at Crab Orchard.  Along with Young, Jared Curry, Gabe Schimpf, and Gabriel Mostinger for Christopher.  For Sesser-Valier, Tyler Winchester, Addison Baxter, Charles Farmer, and Lukas Gunter was in the contest.

Up at the Wayne City Regional, Jared Payne, Tyson Kessler, Zach Krikman, and Reed Raubach shot for the Thompsonville Tigers.  Payne and Kessler was in a tie-breaker in a shootout for five spots and did not advance.

All of us back home tonight will be rooting for you Brendan Whiting.  The times that I have crossed paths with him he an excellent young man. Again, good luck to you at Carver Arena whem you participate.
