Redbirds take on State Ranked Eldorado…Z-R and S-V play again

Steve Dunford – franklincounty-news.com

Last night two of the teams we cover ended their season.  Hamilton County ended their season with a 60-46 loss to the hosts at the Flora Class 2A regional.

Thompsonville ended their campaign at 7-18 as they fell to the Woodlawn Cardinals 50-38, at the Wayne City Class  1A regional. It was a  valiant effort by the Tigers as they were without the services of one starter and their sixth man because of illness.

West Frankfort is still on the road to Peoria as they improved to 10-16 with a 68-63 win over the hot shooting Johnston City Indians at the Eldorado Class 2A regional.

Their reward is getting to play the hosts tonight at 7:00 p.m. at Duff Kingston Gym.  The Eagles come into the game 26-3 and ranked sixth in the latest Associated Press Class 2A Statewide Poll.

During the Midwinter Classic the Redbirds gave the Eldorado everything they wanted, losing 48-44.  WF turned in one of the gutsiest performances I ever witnessed on a basketball floor.

It will take that type of performance or even a little more for the Redbirds to pull the upset tonight.  Eldorado is not flashy or pretty at anything they do, they just win and win a lot.

Game time is 7:00 p.m.   If you can not make it catch Rick Westemeyer and Michael Marlo on WFRX 95.5 The Fan.

Two county rivals, Zeigler-Royalton (3-20) and Sesser-Valier (16-13) that are thirteen miles apart from each other will head down to Williamson County to play in the Crab Orchard Class 1A regional.

In my book, the Devils are coming into the regional as the hands on favorites.  They are peaking at the right time.  They picked up two big road wins last week against Christopher and Chester.

The Tornadoes are playing well.  They picked up a recent victory against a good Webber Township ball club, who notched their 16th win last night.  They have recently gave Goreville and Chrstopher all they wanted.

S-V comes in as a heavy favorite blowing out the Tornadoes twice.  Z-R will not roll over and play dead.  If they pulled the upset it would be the shot heard around the state, however it should be a good hard fought ball game.

Game time is 6:00.  Tonight’s game will be broadcast on WMIX-FM 94.1 with Danny Czerwinski and Wes Choate.

Benton is still in the regular season.  They go on the road to face the Salem Wildcats tonight as it is their last tune up before the Class 3A regionals start next week.

FCHS Cheer Coach Crissy Rains talks about her seniors

I have been using “unpugged” comments from coaches about their seniors.  I asked FCHS Cheer Coach Crissy Rains if I can use this, in which she posted on Facebook.  She graciously gave me permission. -sd

Tonight, we celebrated our seven, beautiful Senior cheerleaders. What a special group these young ladies have been. I’ve watched them grow up before my eyes and cannot believe that this was their last home game.

Elizabeth, was a tiny baby when I first met her. Her family would sit in front of me in church and often I would just adore her precious

self. Today, I know her heart and recognize the bright and inspiring future that lies ahead for her.

Kassy, Rheann and Fairen, have only cheered for me for the last four years, but many more on the sidelines while their sisters cheered for me, as well. They have always been spirited, serious about their craft and a lot of fun to be around. They are rooted in friendship and a deep love for cheer!

Lexi, took a year off her Sophomore year and oh how she was missed! Her gentle way, need for perfection, hard work and perseverance will never be forgotten.

Kourtney, is my candid, straight forward, beauty that makes me laugh. Her open book style has been most uplifting and refreshing because she’s so true to who she is!

And last, but furthest from least, is Dakota. This timid, meticulous, talented and genuine doll has grown so much in four years! I have pushed her out of her comfort zone and watched as she and her stunt group dominated on the floor. She never gave up and continually strived to extend her personal best, even when it was really scary and sometimes, overwhelming.

They are lovely, talented, smart and funny! They have made me proud and prideful! Today and always, they will remain in my heart and I wish them the very best in their incredibly bright futures!

WF, T’ville, and Hamco start post season play tonight

Steve Dunford-franklincouny-news.com

February Fever will be turning into March Madness soon as Class 1A and 2A boys basketball teams tonight start on the Road to Peoria.

Three teams that I cover will be starting their post season journey tonight.  It is ironic that in the three games tonight, they are all first time opponents too each other.

WEST FRANKFORT (9-16) vs JOHNSTON CITY (15-15) at the ELDORADO CLASS 2A REGIONAL 7:00 P.M.

The Indians rotation consists of Wyatt Rix, a 6′ 1″ senior, 6′ 2″ E.J. Thompson a 5’9″senior, Chase Selby a 5’9″ sophomore, Gage Hall a 6′ 0″ senior, and Huston Hall a 5’9″ sophomore.  All in this group can shoot the lights out.

The two others are superstars on the gridiron and are two pretty decent basketball players in 6′ 3″ Luca Galdoni and 6′ 6″ Max Edwards, who will be playing linebacker for Nick Hill’s SIU Salukis the next four seasons.  In my opinion JC does not get Edwards involved in the offense as much as they should.

The Indians are 2-4 against common opponents.  They beat Anna-Jonesboro and Goreville at the Goreville Invitaional.  Lost to Carmi-White County twice, and were blown out twice by Eldorado.

West Frankfort is 2-2 against common opponents.  They lost two heart-breakers to  A-J and Eldorado and won two barn-burners against Carmi and Goreville.

The keys to tonight are; which team can control the tempo and who is hot.  Johnston City lives and dies by the three.  They like to run.

The Redbirds have a size advantage down low with Austin Glodich and Keagan Thrash.  If Noah Allen is hot, the Redbirds will most likely move on and face the Eldorado Eagles.

If Johnston City is shooting the lights out and running and gunning, they will be playing Eldorado.

The first one to 50 points wins.

HAMILTON COUNT Y (6-21) vs FLORA (13-16) at the FLORA CLASS 2A REGIONAL 7:00 P.M.

Most of the Wolves offense goes trough Trevin Smith and Jeffery Gaither two 5′ 11″ senior guards.

Flora is 2-1 against common opponents losing to Edwards County and narrowly defeating Christopher in OT and Fairfield.

The Foxes are 1-4 against common opponents losing to Edwards County twice, Christopher and splitting with Fairfield, the last an overtime win at the Mule Barn.

The Wolves even though they are not big point producers have a little size inside.  They held Christopher’s Bradley Young to eight points when they played back in December.

The Foxes are not the same team as the start of the year.  Oakley Dial does not have to carry the bulk of the offensive load.  Matt Rubenacker and Jake Whipple have become scoring threats for Hamco as the season progressed.

I think it will be a close tight ball game tonight.

THOMPSONVILLE (7-17) vs WOODLAWN, (12-13) 7:30 P.M. at the WAYNE CITY CLASS 1A REGIONAL

The Woodlwan Cardinals are led by 5′ 8″ Blake Wollerman and 6″3 Jordan Hoppa.  The others in the rotation for the Cardinals are 5′ 10″ Senior Zack Ashby, 6 0″ Junior Trey Issac, 5′ 11″ Sophomore Jackson Bennett, 6′ 1″ freshman Blake McKay, and 6’0″ junior Kaden Devore.

Woodlawn is 1-1 against common opponents.  They lost to Webber Township by one at home and was nearly upset by Zeigler-Royalton in the first round of the Sesser-Valier-Holiday-Tournament.

Thompsonville is 1-2.  They lost to Webber Township twice, once narrowly in the opening game of the Christopher Turkey Tournament, and was blown out at Bluford.  They beat Z-R in the consolation championship of the Turkey Tournament.

The Tigers match up well at the guard position.  The match-up to watch is down low with Jordan Hoppa.  He can also step out and hit the three. For T’ville to stay in the game Anthoney Darge and Jake Dixon have to stay out of foul trouble.

T’ville has been playing much better of late.  You have to say Woodlawn is the favorite.  This is one of those games that Woodlawn can either win by 20 or Thompsonville could upset them.

It is the post season.  Everyone is 0-0 coming into tonight in reality. Let it all begin.

WEST FRANKFORT, IL – Click on the link to read the full article. Here is an excerpt) His defender having stumbled, West Frankfort’s Noah Allen finally had space and started a drive to the lane. But before Allen could think about a shot, a Pinckneyville man quickly cut him off and forced him to pass. A few more ineffective passes later, the Panthers had forced a turnover and turned it into points. It was that kind of mindset that coach Bob Waggoner sought in the regular season finale, and it was that kind of mindset that rendered their non-conference visit to West Frankfort a rout before halftime.

Z-R coach Matt Morgan weighs in on his seniors

Steve Dunford – franklincounty-news.com

This is the second in a series that I just let coaches talk about their seniors.  I got this idea after talking to Thompsonville coach Pete Gordon about his seniors.

Z-R cheerleaders with Coach Morgan's daughter Briley

Z-R cheerleaders with Coach Morgan’s daughter Briley

Some of these young men were my son Andrew’s teammates in football playing for C-Z-R.  He talked to me several times about their work ethic.

The Tornadoes play harder than any team in Southern Illinois.  As of late they are playing well, staying in the ball game with two of the top Class 1A teams in Southern Illinois, Christopher and Goreville.

Here is coach Matt Morgan’s comments about his seniors:

Jakob Baxter: Jakob is a kid that has not gotten a lot of playing time over the course of this season, but he has never complained one time and is the leader in the bench. He is always on his teammates about cheering and has such a positive attitude. He’s a work horse that plays extremely hard every minute he has. I’m gonna really miss having him around.

Steven Anderson: Steven has been our Point Guard for 3 years now and the growth and maturity that he has shown on and off the floor is amazing to see. I am so proud of his development and the type of person he is. He’s got a bright future.

“This is a young man that dedicates his life to sports and I have no doubt that he will continue playing athletics beyond this school year! When you have a competitive drive like Steve does, big things are possible!”

Nolan Domineck: Nolan is a team first kid that has been willing to do anything I’ve asked over the past 4 years. His dedication to our program and willingness to do what is best for the team cannot be put into words.

He leaves an impact on the program moving forward that will stay with our younger players for years to come. He improved his game each year and showed the underclassmen what it takes to “Establish a Culture”

Cam Newton: Cams game has progressed so much over the past four years. His knowledge of the game is probably the best of anyone I have ever coached. Having him is like having another coach on the floor and he is someone that you know you can trust.

I don’t expect Cam to be away from the game of basketball long.  I fully expect him to be involved in coaching in the near future.

Austin Bolinger: AB is one of the best leaders I have ever coached! He is always willing to step up and encourage teammates if needed but also will chew someone’s butt if they need it.

His progression as a post player has been fun to watch. He has the heart of a champion and a relentless work ethic. He’s going to be successful in life because of that.

Brendan Whiting: Looking back and seeing the 5’4 110 pound freshman walk into our summer workout and knowing how he developed into the player that he has is absolutely amazing. I don’t know if I know of a kid that has put more effort and time into their game than Brendan has.

The kid is a gym rat that loves the game more than anyone can understand. I am excited to see what the future holds for him.  I fully expect him to continue his playing career. Seeing him grow and mature as a person has been even more special. He understands

The Zeigler-Royalton senior basketball players with Coach Morgan's son, Grayson

that the sky is the limit for him and I expect him to take advantage of that.

All the seniors mean so much to me. The biggest impact that this group has left on me is the relationships that they built with my son Grayson.

My son looks up to and idolize each and everyone of them as positive influences and role models. For that, I am FOREVER grateful!

Thompsonville goes on the road to Norris City tonight.

Steve Dunford – franklincounty-news.com

THOMPSONVILLE, IL –  The Tigers are playing much better basketball as of late. I am going to bring you up to date.  Since a 50-27 loss at Hardin County, T’ville has been on a roll.

A week ago Thursday, the Tigers make the long trip to Tamms to play the Egyptian Pharaohs.   They come out of there with a 50-37 win.

Tiger sophomore Reed Raubach jacks a three in a game down at Joppa two weeks ago. (Samantha Sullivan-Thompsonville High School Boys Basketball Facebook page. Give her a call at 499-6465 if you need an event photographed.

Tyson Kessler led Thompsonville with 16.  Anthoney Darge came close to having a double double with 15 points and nine rebounds.

Corbin Fitch chipped in nine.  Jared Payne had seven points and rebounds as well.  Both Fitch and Payne had four steals.

Last Saturday night the Tigers go on the road Elkville to play another South Egyptian opponent, the Elverado Falcons.

Honestly I was leery making the trip over there after the Falcons upset Meridian the night before.  It is not the easiest place to play on the road either.

It was the Tigers who came close to pulling the upset, as they led most of the way, lost the lead and stormed back to go in to overtime tied at 51 .

Foul trouble and fatigue plagued the Tigers in the final frame as they lost 66-52.

Tyson Kessler had another good night with 18 points and four assists.  Corbin Fitch added eight.  Jared Payne also had eight on the night.  He had four assists and had five rebounds also.

Jake Dixon came off the bench and played well.  He scored six on the night and added four boards.

Last Tuesday night they played their arch rival Galatia Bearcats in a game that did not count in the GEC standings.  Tville picked up a 59-51 win.

It was Senior Night for Cory Wilce, Tyson Kessler, and Noah Summers, who got the start.

Cory Wilce came up big on the night.  He had 19 points on four threes and went 7-8 from the line.

Tyson Kesler added 15 and also went 7-8 from the charity stripe.

Jared Payne had 11 points and had five assists.

Corbin Fitch was the fourth Tiger in double figures with ten points. Something that jumped out at me was he was five for five from the field.

Luke Lawrence led the Bearcats with 15 points on the night, Kody Matthews 14, and Devin Verbeck chipped in ten.  This trio between them sunk eight threes on the night.

The Tigers go into tonight’s game with NCOE with a 7-16 record.  Two of those wins are against the Fighting Cardinals.   They will face the Woodlawn Cardinals Monday Night in the first round of the Wayne City Class 1A Regional.

I think Thompsonville will match up with Wollerman and Isaac well.  Jordan Hoppa’s strength and height might give the Tigers some trouble in the post.  It is a winnable game for T’ville in the regional Monday night the way they have been playing of late.

Galatia is 10-14 on the season.  They have a tough one tonight on the road at Carrier Mills.  They will play a familiar foe in Crab Orchard in the first,  The Bearcats dropped a 46-43 decision in the semi finals of the GEC tournament.

Let February Fever begin.

Benton faces Marion in the first round of the Carterville Class 3A Regional

Steve Dunford – franklincounty-news.com

When the seedings came out last night, The IHSA used geography for the play in games of the complex which made sense.  I figured there would be a good chance that the Rangers would be facing the Marion Wildcats.  They will be playing them on Wednesday night, March 1st., at 7:00 p.m. at Carterville.

I know several were disappointed, feeling the Rangers were low balled, I was at first.  Here is what I was thinking.  To get out of a regional, you are going to have to face either Carbondale or Centralia anyway.March Madness

Yes, an extra night of rest might have been beneficial.  However, the lay out of the bracket gives the Ranger coaching staff one last look at Carbondale playing a familiar opponent.

For Marion, Justin Shadowens is very exciting to watch.  He reminds me of the Energizer Bunny.  He is one of the better point guards I have watched in a long time.  He is a Lukas Gunter/Seth Ramsey type player.

Jackson Connor will be a treat for Ranger fans to watch as well.  He is the son of Zeigler-Royalton standout Sean Connor.  He does not play like a freshman on the court.  He has the capabilities of being a high level Division 1 player, like his dad was at Notre Dame.

Marion Coach and Benton resident Dave Brown goes eight or nine deep.  They do have a little of a size advantage on the Rangers.  This has been going into games several times this year.

I am a little old school when I give regional parings.  After the complex, they are regionals.  I give the seeds as such.  I also give pairings one round at a time for local teams.  For the whole Class 3A state tournament bracket copy the link below:

Ron Winemiller talks about his seniors

Since High School basketball is coming to a close, I asked the county coaches to share their thoughts on their seniors. -sd

Derek Oxford has meant a lot to this program over the last 4 years. He started his first game at Pinckneyville as a Freshman in the Duster Thomas Hoops Classic, and had 15 in the first half. He is a great leader and an even better kid than he is an athlete.

Austin Wills has worked tirelessly on his game. He has spent a lot of time in the gym to make himself a great shooter. He has made himself a great shooter. He has had a great career.

Timmy Henson was just what we needed when he moved in from Thompsonville. One of the first games he started was a win at Massac his Sophomore year and he has done nothing but help us win ever since.

Scott Mosley and Tony Tillman have been great teammates that have come to practice everyday and worked.

Rangers receive the fourth seed in regional/sectional complex

The seedings were released this afternoon for the class 3A and 4A boys basketball teams statewide.  The Benton Rangers (25-2) are the four seed in the Carterville/Centralia Class 3A Regional/Sectional Complex.

Centralia is hosting and they received the two seed.  It is a guarantee the Rangers will be going to Carterville.  It is most likely their first round opponent will be the Marion Wildcats.

Game times and pairings will come out tomorrow afternoon.  We will share them on the site.

Below are the seedings and records:

1.  Carbondale (17-7)

2.  Centralia (16-9)

3.  Murphysboro (19-5)

4.  Benton (26-2)

5.  Marion (15-10)

6.  Herrin (14-10)

7.  Salem (12-12)

8.  Massac County (11-12)

9.  Carterville (13-11)

10.  Mt. Vernon (7-18)

Sesser-Valier outlasts Christopher in a marathon

Steve Dunford franklincounty-news.com

CHRISTOPHER-  Tuesday night the Sesser-Valier Red Devils defeated the Christopher Bearcats 85-81 in overtime.  It was senior night for Kaeleb Pedigo, Gabe Schimpf, Zach Snell, and Andrew Dunford.

There was no flow to the game at all.  There were a lot of walks to the north and south end of “The Cave” as there were 53 fouls called in the contest 27 on Sesser-Valier and 26 on Christopher.  Jamie Lance and Seth Boles fouled out for the Devils, and Gabe Schimpf, Bradley Young and Jared Curry fouled out for the Bearcats.

I have watched a lot of high school basketball in my nearly 47 years on this earth.  S-V had one of the best nights at the free throw line I

ever witnessed. (28-30 94%)  Christopher was very good as well (23-28 82%)

The Red Devils bench came into play as fouls began to mount up on both teams.  Coach Shane Garner has a nine man rotation in my opinion is the deepest bench of any Class 1A school in Southern Illinois.  Christopher Coach Eric Stallman had to go a lot deeper into his bench than the Bearcats have been accustomed to this season.

In the first quarter Charles (I had to go back and correct for calling him Charlie) Farmer came out red hot.  He had the Devils first seven points for S-V in the first two and 1/2 minutes of the game.  It was tied at seven then.

The Bearcats began clicking on all cylinders as they went on a 22-7 run over the next four minutes.  Young had 12 of his 21 points on the night.

Farmer stopped the bleeding at the end of the first as he hit a 15 foot baseline jumper in the closing seconds of the quarter to cut the Bearcat lead down to 29-16.  He had 12 of his 26 on the night as well.

In the Second Quarter fouls started to mount up for both teams. Bradley Young picks up his third in the first minute of the quarter. Jared Curry goes down with his third about the 3:30 mark.  Jamie Lance and a couple other Devils also had three as well.

Christopher was in the double bonus at the end of the first quarter. Sesser-Valier was in it early. There were only two field goals for each team in the quarter.

There were only two field goals for each team in the quarter.  It was looking like the Bearcats were going to pull away.   The Bearcats had a 40-26 lead when Curry picked up his third foul just under the three minute mark.

Coach Stallman played a little McLeansboro ball the rest of the way…there were a couple of unforced turnovers and the Devils capitalized.  Both teams went to the popcorn break (Christopher has the best, and a huge sack for $1) with the Bearcats up 40-30.

Out of the locker rooms Christopher comes out and on the first two possessions come out with Young being hit on a fast break and Pedigo hitting a couple free throws in the first 30 seconds.  To put Christopher up 44-30.  Pedigo was there a lot as he was 12/12 at the line.  It looked like the Bearcats were well on their way to a blowout.

The next possession Young’s reappearance into the game did not last long as he picked up his fourth foul.  Curry picked up his fourth one just right after that.  Mainly they played a 2-3 but they also played a 3-2 and went to a 1-3-1 on a couple of possessions.

Lukas Gunter began to pick apart that zone, with dribble drive penetration, either from layups or getting fouled.  Most of his game high 29 came in the second half, going 19-20 from the free throw line.  Tyler Winchester also took advantage of it bombing four very deep threes in his 14 points on the night.

The momentum swung quickly to the Devils as they began to chip away.  Addison Baxter with a very deep three in front of the Sesser-Valier coaching staff to give the Devils the lead 53-52 with :42 on the clock at the end of the third.

Christopher coughs the ball up and the Devils could not convert on a possession as they had a chance for several stickbacks and the quarter ended with the Devils holding on to the one point lead.

The Devils come out the gate to start the fourth quick with back to back steals from Lukas Gunter and to go up 57-52.

The Devils keep a five point lead with L. Gunter and Pedigo trading trips to the line.  The Devils go up 63-56 at the 4:30 mark with a couple more free throws from the Red Baron who struck again. (WMIX broadcaster Danny Czerwinski’s name for Lukas Gunter)

Bradley Young then goes on a tear. The exclamation point was a break away two handed dunk to tie it up at 65 with two minutes and change left on the clock.

In the closing seconds of regulation,  Gabe Schimpf knocks down a pair of free throws to give Christopher the first lead in a long while. Tyler Winchester answers back with a three to put S-V back up 68-67.

Bryce Pratt (Cool Hand Luke for the Bearcats down the stretch this year)  goes 1/2 from the line, the Devils turn the ball over and Young finds Pratt in the post to put Christopher up 70-68.

The Red Baron struck again from the line again and Schimpf has a three that rims in and out at the buzzer as both teams are tied at 70 at the end of regulation.

In the extra frame, Pedigo and Schimpf strap the Bearcats on their back as Curry and Young foul out.  Tyler Winchester hits another three at the 2:46 mark of OT to give the Devils a three point lead and they kept the lead until Zach Snell drills a deep three with :39 seconds left to tie it up at 81.

Lukas Gunter goes down and hits two more free throws, and Pedigo misses a layup.  Charles Farmer ices it from the free throw line to give the Devils the four point victory.

Sesser-Valier improves to 15-13 on the season and 7-4 in the Black Diamond West.  They go on the road to face Chester on Friday night, before starting play in the Crab Orchard Class 1A regional against Zeigler-Royalton  Tuesday at 6:00 pm.

Christopher falls to 14-12 on the year and also 7-4 in the conference.  They make the short bus trip to Z-R on Friday to finish out the regular season.  They will play on Wednesday at the Crab Orchard regional facing the winner of Steeleville and Elverado, Wednesday at 6:00 p.m.

The Bearcats loss gave the BDC West championship to Goreville as they fell back two in the loss column with one game to go.
