Franklin County boys basketball preview evening edition

There is a triple header at the Sesser-Vailer Holiday tournament of christopher-bearcatsthree county teams tonight.  The final session starts at 5:00 pm with Christopher against New Athens; followed by Thompsonville and Steeleville; then Sesser-Valier and Galatia in the night cap.

Christopher (3-4) vs New Athens (3-6)

There is one necessity for the Bearcats, that is to get Bradley Young more involved in the offense.

St. Louis Post Dispatch photo

New Athens is led by 6′ 6″ junior Jaxon Heintz.  They have a pretty good guard in Theo Dudeck.

The Yellow Jackets own a 10 point win over Flora, which raised my eyebrows.

I am going with the Bearcats by five. It is going to be a grueling fight for whoever plays at 7 o’clock Thursday night.

Thompsonville (3-4) Steeleville (6-3)

The Tigers look like they might have been poised for a seven or tville-logoeight seed until the wheels fell off a couple of weeks ago.  This is what Tiger coach Pete Gordon has to say coming into tonight’s game; “Steeleville is good, they are well coached. We will have our hands full.  If we can compete and fight, we can have a shot at a w.”

Steeleville destroyed T’ville last year in the consolation championship game.  However, a short handed Tiger team played with them

The big question for the Tigers is, Can they stop Owen Gross.  I am curious who gets the defensive assignment on him.  I say it will be steelevilleJared Payne.  Corbin Fitch and Tyson Kessler might guard him as well.

The SVHT is a pivotal point in the Tigers season.  Even if they are two and out and compete, they are poised for a good second half.

I am going with Steeleville by 12 tonight.

Sesser-Vailer (2-6) at Galatia (3-5)

pitchforkThere are a lot of similarities.  Both teams like to play a lot of people.  Both teams like to push it.

Clark Lance better get him an extra RC product before the game starts from the hospitality room.  He will be announcing a lot of points and a lot of subs.

This will be a very high scoring game.  The back court for both

teams I give a draw.  The Devils have the edge inside.

I am trying to take of an adjective to describe this but the best I could come up with is Galatia plays wild.  They want their opponent to play like this.

I expect it to be a good ball game.  I am going with S-V by six.

Sesser Valier Holiday Tournament -very balanced

by Steve Dunford -franklincounty-news.com

This has the potential to be the best tournament in history.  Three teams in the tournament that were penciled in to be potential favorites are below .500

Number one seed Woodlawn is 3-4, and so is number five seed Goreville.  To be honest about the Goreville Blackcats it would not surprise me if they are in Peoria come march.  Number two seed Chirstopher is 2-3.  All three have played a very tough schedule.

Since the deck has been shuffled if I had to seed the tournament today I would go with the following:

  • 1)  Waltonville

Sesser-Valier High School- Southern Illinoisan file photo

Sesser-Valier High School- Southern Illinoisan file photo

  • 2)  Chester
  • 3)  Steeleville
  • 4)  Goreville
  • 5)  Woodlawn
  • 6)  Christopher
  • 7)  Sesser-Valier
  • 8)  Marissa-Coulterville
  • 9)  Century
  • 10) Johnston City
  • 11)  Cobden
  • 12)  New Athens
  • 13)  Galatia
  • 14)  Odin
  • 15)  Thompsonville
  • 16)  Zeigler-Royalton

By no means I am not questioning the coaches in their seeding.  It has been a weird year.  Things have changed so much in the two week span.

The Chester Yellow Jackets out of the Black Diamond West come back to the tournament, after being at Pinckneyville a few years. They join conference foes Christopher, Z-R, and the host Sesser-Valier  They replace the Egyptian Pharaohs.  I thought Egyptian went to Dongola, but I was mistaken.  I do not have a clue where the Pharaohs went.

Another team that is back this year, is the Galatia Bearcats.  They left to go to Eldorado for a few years.  They are out of the Greater Egyptian conference.  Thompsonville is in the GEC as well.   There is a potential rival game in the consolation bracket if the parings play out.

Here is the order of my preview.  I am going to go with the Franklin County schools first.  Then I am going to go by seed order.  For the unseeded teams, I am going by opponents of the county schools first. I will do Galatia first of the unseeded teams, because I cover the GEC.

The bracket is at the end of the preview.  I tried to put it at the top, but I could not add text underneath it.  I had an awesome response from coaches.  The tourney should be a dandy.

CHRISTOPHER BEARCATS

SEED:  #2christopher-bearcats

RECORD:  3-4

COACH:  Eric Stallman

ENROLLMENT AND CLASS: 243 (1A)

CONFERENCE:  Black Diamond West

RESULTS AGAINST TEAMS IN THE FIELD (1-2)

lost to Woodlawn at home 49-46

lost to Waltonville at home 43-41

beat Sesser-Valier on the road 59-56

The Bearcats have had some close ones. They finished second in their own Turkey Tournament, losing to Wayne City in the championship game.  They lost in overtime to Flora who plays in the tough Little Illini Conference on Thursday night.

Guard Kaelab Pedigo has been a scoring machine for the Bearcats this year.  Jared Curry a 6′ 5″ has been a jack of all trades from playing the point to the five spot.

Defenders have been keying on Bradley Young, one of the top scorers in Southern Illinois last season.  He has been held below double figures in a lot of games.  He is due to reel off 30 against some opponent.

Sharpshooter guard Gabe Schimpf is Pedigo’s running mate.  He has signed a letter of intent to play baseball for SEMO.  Freshman Bryce Pratt is the fifth starter for the Bearcats.

Coach Eric Stallman had this to say about the tournament.  “The Sesser-Valier Holiday Tournament is a very good 1A tournament. We look forward to the opportunity to play some very good teams.”

The Bearcats first round opponent is New Athens at 5 P.M. tomorrow.

SESSER-VALIER RED DEVILS

RECORD 2-6

COACH:  Shane Garner

ENROLLMENT AND CLASS 215 (1A)

CONFERENCE:  Black Diamond West

RESULTS AGAINST TEAMS IN THE FIELD (1-1)

Won at home against Chester 70-67

Lost at home against Christopher 59-56

The Devils have four starters coming back from last year’s squad that finished fifth in the tournament;  point guard Lukas Gunter, shooting guard Charles Farmer, Preston Launius who plays the tree spot, and post player Jaimie Lance.   Joshua Gunter, Addison Page, Clayton Smith and Seth Boles will see a lot of time on the floor Sesser-Valier this week.

S-V has played a brutal schedule so far, participating in the DuQuoin Tip-off Classic as well as losing to state ranked Okawville.

Here is what Red Devil coach Shane Garner said about the field; “This year’s tourney could go many different ways. I wouldn’t be surprised is any of the top eight teams won it. Many different styles and match ups. Biggest factor will be who can consistently play at a high level for four straight days. Each round will be a battle and could go in any direction.”

“We are focusing on playing a complete game. Being consistent in what we do well. Our thoughts are being simple. Take care of the ball and take open shots. Keep the ball in front of us, rebound and go get it. If we can be good at the simple we should have opportunities to win ball games next week. We are deep and that’s in our advantage and obviously being at home helps. We are looking forward to a great week of basketball.”

The Devils play Galatia tomorrow night at 8 pm.

THOMPSONVILLE TIGERS

RESLUTS AGAINST TEAMS IN THE FIELD: (1-0)

Beat Zeigler-Roaylton 51-38 in the Consolation Championship at the Christopher Turkey Tournament

The Tigers are one of the tallest and youngest teams in the tournament.  Their leading scorer is sophomore point guard Tyson Kessler.  Anthoney Darge a 6′ 7″ sophomore, Reed Raubach a 6′ 4″ sophomore, and Corbin Fitch a 6′ 1″ freshman are all in the Tiger’s rotation.

A pair of senior guards Jared Payne and Cory Wilce have been three year starters for T’ville.

The Tigers were off to a 3-2 start but were blown out by Carrier Mills and Webber Township in their last two games.

Thompsonville coach Pete Gordon had this to say about the tournament; “I believe these players are ready to compete at a higher level.  I need them to believe it.  We have addressed some effort issues we have had early, now we need to walk the walk.”

The Tigers play Steeleville at 6:30 pm tomorrow night.

Lost to Thompsonville 51-38 at the Christopher Turkey Tournament.

The Tornadoes have a very good back court tandem of Steven Anderson and Brendan Whiting.  One the Z-R front line is Cam Newton (and yes it was C-Z-R’s QB this season), Nolan Domenick and Jakob Baxter.

Here is what Z-R Coach Matt Morgan had to say about the tournament;  “Coming into the tournament we will have had 17 days off since our last game so you sometimes don’t know what to expect. We have had a very good 2 weeks of practice and our kids have worked tirelessly.”

“The whole season is a process and this is another part of that process. The tournament itself is very deep with a lot of good teams. I’m excited to get started and see what happens.”

The Tornadoes open against Woodlawn at 1:30 P.M.

The Cardinals have became a Dynasty in 1A Basketball the last few years by taking home hardware from Peoria in recent history.  They finished second in 2008-09, 3rd in 10-11, state champs 2011-12, and finished fourth last season.

The Cardinals were hit heavily with graduation.  Three role players are back from the state tournament team in Jordan Hoppa, Trey Isaac and Blake Wollerman.

Lost to Chester in the Trico Tournament 61-54

Won at Marissa-Coulterville 41-27

I had a great conversation talking HS basketball with coach Bryce Bainter on  Friday.  I will publish the post season sites and assignments next week.  The assignments have not changed in the regional/sectional complex for the 1A teams in the northern part of the sectional.  Steeleville will be ” Road Warriors” again as the regional sites are Wayne City and Crab Orchard.  The SVHT gives them the chance  to see local teams.

Coach Bainter filled me in on the Warriors; ” Owen Gross is averaging 13ppg., Reid Frederking 10 ppg.,, Andrew Grafton 9 ppg. Smith and Sutton are averaging around 7 ppg each.

WALTONVILLE SPARTANS

CONFERENCE:  Midland Trail

ENROLLMENT AND CLASS:  103

OPPONENTS PLAYED IN THE FIELD (2-0)

Beat Christopher on the road 43-41

Beat Woodlawn on the road 56-49

The Spartans come in the hottest team in the field.  After starting 1-2, they have reeled off five in a row.  They finished fourth in the Christopher Thanksgiving Tournament, losing to conference foes Wayne City and Webber Township back to back.  Those four “W” teams in the  Midland Trail will be very dangerous come February.  Tuesday night they had a very impressive win over a very good Crab Orchard Trojan team 61-46.

Two transfers that are no strangers to the tournament are playing well for the Spartans; Isaac McPhail from Chirstopher, and Zane Wilson from Sesser-Valier.  Throw in Dalton Banach,  who is one of the better 1A defenders in the south, Caleb Jordan, and big man Tanner Spihlmann, I say Waltonville has to be the favorite to cut the nets down.

Here are some thoughts from Coach Tyler Mitchell on the tournament; “Yes, we are playing well right now. My biggest concern would be how are we going to respond after two days off playing at 9a.m.”

“Will we be ready to go?  Cobden by no means is a bad team, and have been playing with a lot of good teams from what I’ve seen. It won’t be an easy first round and the fact that we play that early after two days off, can be concerning for any coach.”

GOREVILLE BLACKCATS

Conference:  Black Diamond West

Opponents played in the field:  (1-1)

Lost to Johnston City 78-75 in their own tournament

Won at Cobden 77-67

I have watched the Blackcats several times this season.  I want to think superintendent Steve Webb, AD/Coach Todd Tripp, and play by play man Tim Petrowich for streaming games from there.  It helps me greatly with coverage.

When putting this together I realized all of Goreville’s losses has been against 2A teams.  They have played a brutal schedule that will help them this week.

The Blackcats are led by one of the better guards and a post player/3 man in the South in Braden Webb and Brant Glidewell.  Peyton Massey and Tanner Dunn has played a lot of varsity minutes for Goreville.  Their fifth starter, Davis Helton, is a blue collar post player that crashes the boards hard.

Here is what Coach Todd Tripp says about the SVHT.  “The tournament is pretty wide open I believe the potential second round games could be really good this year.”

GAMES AGAINST COMMON OPPONETS IN THE FIELD

Beat Steeleville in the Trico Tournament 61-54

Lost to Sesser-Valier 70-67 at home

The Yellow Jackets have everyone back except Jason Schwartz from a 20-9 team last season.   Savion Smith is 6 3″ and can play all over the floor.  Deomonte Martin was the point guard.  Jack Weir was a blue collar post player in the inside.  I remember Jake Golding being the same type of player.  Drake Bollman was the sixth man, and Jake Haberberger was the first guard off the bench.

They ran the field in their own tournament before dropping their first two conference games to Vienna (who is 8-1) and Sesser-Valier. The Yellowjackets have wins over Anna-Jonesboro and Trico during this stretch.

This is what coach Brad Norman had to say about the field;  “I feel like the Sesser-Valier Tournament has as much equal talent across the board as I have ever seen. I think the top eight  teams all have a shot at making it to the championship round.”

“We are battling some injuries. but feel as if we can compete with anybody on any given night. I believe the team that can utilize their bench and be consistent every night, will be the team that wins it all.”

I guarantee you, this is the toughest seven seed in the history of the tournament.

JOHNSTON CITY INDIANS

The Indians have SIU football bound 6′ 6″ Max Edwards in the middle.  They have some good athletes can chuck up the three, in Wyatt Rix, Lucas Galdoni, Chase Shelby, and the Hall’s (I assume they are brothers.

The Indians looked like they were poised for a very high seed.  The wheels fell off when they entered conference play.  They like to get up and down the floor and live and die by the three.

Coach Rod Wallace is back for his second tour of duty as coach of the Bearcats.  He also spent some time as the women’s coach at Southeastern Illinois College.

They have a couple of sharp shooting guards in Luke Lawrence and Devyn Verbeck who I remember from last year.  Coach Wallace will run people in and out in waves and they will run and gun.

This is what coach Wallace had to say about the tournament and their season so far,  “I am planning on playing in the winner’s bracket. We will see how that works out for us.   We have been very close in several big games and fell just short. Most of the time we have self destructed. Hopefully it will be a different outcome on Monday.”

Coach Widdersheim gave me a very good summary about his team;  “This is my first year coaching the New Athens Varsity team.  I took over for Marc Derwort who had a very successful nine year stint with the program.  We are currently 3-6 overall and 1-1 in our conference.”

“Wins have been against O’Fallon First Baptist Academy, Flora and Dupo.  Losses have been against Okawville, Hillsboro, Freeburg, Carlyle, Trico and Valmeyer.  We ended up getting 4th place at the Kaskaskian Classic in Carlyle over Thanksgiving.  We’ve got a pretty experienced team with six seniors on the rosters.”

“We’ve got a good balance of post play and guard play that has kept us competitive against the bigger schools on our schedule.  The boys are continuing to make improvements every day and we are excited to be a part of the SVHT again this year.”

One player that will be exciting to watch this week is Kyle Smith, who is the number three scorer in the Metro East at 22 points a game.  Tony Stoddard averages 11 a contest for the Meteors.  James Inman, and Blaine Knope will see a lot of time for M-C this week.

The Meteors went up to the Metro East Lutheran tournament and played some stiff competition up there and gave some teams a game.  One thing that stands out is they played the hosts to 10 points.

I had a great conversation with coach Wine on the 23rd, and expect the Meteors to have a great week at the SVHT

Holiday Tournament Previews released on Christmas night

Steve’s Ramblings

Steve Dunford –  franklincounty-news.com

First of all let me explain my reasoning for releasing the previews on Christmas night.  I am doing this in honor of the late voice of the West Frankfort Redbrids, Bruce A. Fasol.  He used to have his tournament preview on WFRX at 7 P.M. on Christmas night.  I recorded a lot of audio tape of it back in the day.  I will have Sesser-Valier, and Eldorado completed.  Since Pinckneyville does not start until the 27th.  I might need some extra time.  If not on Christmas I will have that completed on the 26th.

The late long time Redbird broadcaster Bruce Fasol with his long time color man Rick Westemeyer, in Bruce's bird perch. Westemeyer is now the voice of the Redbirds.

The late long time Redbird broadcaster Bruce Fasol with his long time color man Rick Westemeyer, in Bruce’s “Bird Perch. Westemeyer is now the voice of the Redbirds.

If anyone has any info about any teams from the DTHC, please let me know.  I want to  keep every fan informed.

I will not be able to attend any holiday tournament this year.  I am going to rely on different media sources to keep everyone informed.

The IHSA released sites and parings this week for the postseason.  I will be posting them and breaking them down                                                                   after the first of the year.

I had it all laid out for the county teams on this post.  I looked at the meter and it was 600 words.  I could not access the site for a while. It did not auto save.  I guess it was the Lord’s way of saying I was one winded.

I love talking to coaches.  I talked to Marissa-Coulterville coach Scott Wine on the phone for about an hour.  He filled me in on the teams in the Cahokia conference.  I have had several conversations with coaches this week.   I love it…

Speaking of talking basketball, I love taking to Rich Herrin over the years.  I have had a lot of good conversations with him after Morthland games.  I sit behind the bench so I can watch him coach and soak every minute of it.

Since it is Christmas, I have a story to tell about coach Herrin.  I was talking to Norman “Doc” Melvin at Christmastime last year.  He told me that Coach Herrin received his first cell phone as a Christmas gift several years ago.

There were all the numbers loaded in it.  Doc receives a call from Coach Herrin after 11 P.M. on Christmas night wanting to talk basketball.  He was going through his contacts calling everyone.  You “gotta” love it.

I think you see why I call it ramblings. I just say random things.  I have had my highest compliments on this time of post since I started writing.  They used to be one long paragraph and punctuation optional.  You will see more.  By the way I have hit the over 400 mark again.

I want to wish everyone reading a Merry Christmas.  Remember the reason for the season.  A baby was born of a virgin and went to the cross, so that a rotten sinner like me could have eternal life.  He died for you too.  That is what the season is all about.

Rivalry night in Franklin County

Steve Dunford-Franklin County Hoops And Gridiron

There are only two games involving county schools tonight and they are playing each other.  The West Frankfort Redbirds make the short six mile trip up Route 37 to Rich Herrin Gym, to play the Benton Rangers.  The Christopher Bearcats have a short eight mile trip up Route 148 to take on the Sesser-Valier Red Devils.

West Frankfort (0-1)(1-3) at Benton (1-0)(7-0)

The Rangers are off to the fast start like last year as they were wf-redbirdsundefeated going into the Duster Thomas Hoops Classic.  The Redbirds has a o fer off their record in holiday tournament play as they picked up their first two wins at the Eldorado Holiday Tournament.  Here is what Ranger Coach Ron Winemiller had to say about the match-up this evening.  “I expect both teams to be verybenton-rangers prepared for what we like to do. I expect WF will try and use their size and force the ball inside. I hope our ball pressure can cause them some problems. It doesn’t matter what the records are it is Benton vs West Frankfort, so you know both teams will play with a lot of passion. “

Redbird Coach Kevin Toney had this to say about tonight.  “I hope we can handle the ball against them.  They make everything so difficult on both ends of the floor and it will be a challenge.  But that is what every team attempts to do.  We need to go into another teams gym, and put all the distractions out of our mind.  We just need to play how we know we can play.”

I jot down keys to the game.  I had the Redbirds size and length could give the Rangers problems, just as Coach Winemiller said.  The Rangers have went nine deep with out missing a beat. West Frankfort is much deeper this year as well.

Benton’s press is ferocious.  If the Redbirds struggle with it, it could be a long night.  In addition they can flat out shoot the basketball.  So can Noah Allen.

West Frankfort will start 6′  6″ and 6′ 5″ in Austin Glodich and Keagan Thrash.  They can bring 6′ 5″ off the bench in Bradlee Croslin.  The Rangers tallest guy that has saw significant time is Parker Williams at 6′ 3″

Derek Oxford and Timmy Henson are four year starters, if you count Henson’s freshman year at Thompsonville.  Austin Wills has logged a lot of varsity minutes.

Throwing in the anticipated “junior five” for Benton, I have to give the edge to the Rangers by 12 tonight.  The Redbirds will be ready to play in a hard fought contest.

Christopher (2-3)(0-0) at Sesser-Valier (1-0)(2-4)

This is the BDC West opener for Christopher.  Sesser-Valier pulled a major upset in defeating the Chester Yellow Jackets in their only christopher-bearcatsconference game of the year.

Both teams were involved barn burner losses on Tuesday night.   The Bearcats lost on a buzzer beater 43-41 to the Waltonville Spartans by former Bearcat, Isaac McPhail. The Red Devils were involved in a track meet down at Johnston City Losing 88-86.

Kaleab Pedigo can shoot the rock, so can Charlie Farmer.  Gabe Schimpf can fill it up in an blue and orange uniform tonight.

Going into the season, I was concerned about the Bearcats post game.  Jaredpitchfork Curry shot up to 6’5″ and Cole Sanders transferred from Z-R over the summer.

I would be at one or the other place tonight if I could.  One thing I would be curious about which Devil will guard Bradley Young.  I have a feeling it will be Joshua Gunter.  The Z word is not in Shane Garner or Eric Stallman’s vocabulary.

A couple advantages that S-V has over Christopher is they are deeper at the three spot whether it be Gunter, Preston Launius, or Addison Baxter.  They are more physical in the post with Jamie Lance, Addison Page, and Seth Boles.

Curry has been playing the point for the Bearcats setting the offense and going in and posting up.  Lukas Gunter is one of the better 1A point guards in Southern Illinois but advantage Curry in this position with the height advantage.  Curry will cause match-up problems all over the floor tonight.

It is no secret the Bearcats like to run.  With Shane Garner able to play 10 or 11, it would be to the Devils advantage.

If two tom cats were fighting in 18 bottoms from each town, there would be maroon and red and grey in the crowd.  There would be Maroon and Orange in a cat fight between the two at the Valier Patch as well.

I have went over several scenarios in my head who will come on top in this one.  I have had some with Sesser-Valier and Christopher winning on my legal pad full of scribbles.

I have been told I have instincts as a prognosticator.  I am going with the Bearcats in a buzzer beater by Pedigo hitting a three.  Young will have at least 15-20 tonight.

I am either the most loved or hated man in the county tonight.  And old geezer like me trying to be a prognosticator does not matter much.  What I have to say will go out the window at tip-off.

IHSA estabishes pitch counts for HS baseball

The Illinois High School Association (IHSA) Board of Directors met at its regularly scheduled meeting at the IHSA office in Bloomington ihsaon Monday, December 12, 2016, where the Board voted to implement a pitching regulation Policy in the sport of baseball. The pitch limitations are effective immediately and will be used by IHSA member schools during the 2017 baseball season this spring.
The limitations approved by the Board closely mirror the pitching limitations jointly developed by the IHSA’s Baseball Advisory Committee and Sports Medicine Advisory Committee. The most significant change from the original recommendation is dropping the maximum number of pitches in a game from 115 pitches to 105 pitches.

Click here to see the Pitch Count Guidelines Policy.

“This was a collaborative effort that goes a long way toward making high school baseball in Illinois safer,” said IHSA Sports Medicine Advisory Committee member Dr. Preston Wolin. “I want to thank the IHSA Board, the Sports Medicine Advisory Committee, the Baseball Advisory Committee, and all the people who were indispensable in this process for their efforts.”

Dr. Wolin was a guest of the Baseball Advisory Committee at their August meeting, where he presented the recommendations of the Sports Medicine Advisory to the group.

The Board of Directors reviewed the pitching limitation recommendation in the fall and chose to present it to the IHSA membership for feedback during the Association’s annual Town Hall Meetings in November.

“Kudos to the Baseball Advisory and Sports Medicine Advisory committees for working together on behalf of student safety,” said IHSA Executive Director Craig Anderson. “We believe that the NFHS and its state association membership have been leaders in this area in all sports, but ultimately, the high school season encompasses a short window. The IHSA is developing a process for schools to submit their game-by-game pitching counts via the IHSA website, which will be presented to coaches and school personnel prior to the season. Franklin County boys basketball preview 12/13/16

Steve Dunford-Franklin County Hoops and Gridiron

There are three boys’ games on tap this evening for the county teams.  The Benton Rangers host the Carmi-White County Bulldogs; (both teams are undefeated) the Christopher Bearcats host the Waltonville Spartans; and the Sesser-Valier Red Devils travel to Johnston City.  It is safe to say this is the best docket of games for the regular season.

Carmi-White County (6-0 ) at Benton (6-0)

The Bulldogs have been survivors in most of their games.  Benton had their first barn burner down at Herrin Friday night.  It has been well documented the heroics of Timmy Henson at the end of the game.

I see a little match-up problems possibly inside for the Rangers tonight.  However, the Rangers are what everyone expected coming into this year.  This is the first of three games this week for the Rangers in the newly renovated Rich Herrin gym.

After being road warriors, the Rangers will be pumped to be home in their new digs.  I am going Rangers by seven.

Waltonville (3-2) at Christopher (2-2)

waltonville-spartansThe Spartans were expected by most to cutchristopher-bearcats down the nets in the Christopher Turkey Tournament.  Instead they were defeated by Wayne City and Webber Township to take home fourth place.

Bradley Young is long overdue for the Bearcats.  I feel for the opponent when he lights it up for 30+ one night.  Jared Curry has been playing exceptionally well.  I wonder if Kaleab Pedigo and his running mate from last year, Isaac McPhail will guard each other.

This was penciled in by most prognosticators (I don’t know if I qualify for that or not) to be the championship game of the Turkey Tournament.  The Bearcats would have come in the underdogs into the championship game.  I have to go with Christopher by three in a dandy tonight.

Sesser-Valier (2-4) at Johnston City (3-4)

pitchforkThe Indians has fallen off the face of the johnston-city-indiansearth.  When they were off to a 3-0 start I was seeing a possible number one seed at the Sesser-Valier Holiday Tournament.  They now have a number eight seed.

I can see SIU football bound Max Edwards causing problems on the board for the Devils.  When I watched some video from Goreville, it seemed like JC lived and died by the three.  I don’t know what happened in their two blowout losses, but it seems like the home run ball is gone.

After S-V defeated Chester at home, their stock is on the rise.  It is a bearish market for the Indians.  I am going with Red Devils by five.

High School Basketball Preview 12/9/16

Steve Dunford Franklin County Hoops and Gridiron

Five out of the six teams in the county will be in action tonight, four will have conference games.  The games will be previewed below.  I have the county schools going 1-4 tonight.  I might be the most hated man in the county right now after you read this.  Around 10 P.M. I hope I am the biggest liar in the county.  It does not get any better than HS basketball on a cold winter’s night around Southern Illinois.

Benton (5-1) at Herrin (4-1)

This is the conference opener for both SIRR Ohio division teams tonight.  Benton is coming off a 5-0 Goreville Tournament championship.  Herrin is coming off of a strong 4-1 showing at the Pyramid Plus on Thanksgiving week.

Herrin has basically the same core coming back from last year in

Nessler, Spell, and the Downen twins.  Benton has the same core as well too.

Rust might be a factor for the Tigers tonight, not playing in two weeks.  The Goreville Game on Saturday night of the tournament was the only real test the Rangers has had.

I say the Rangers will come out of Memorial gym tonight at the skin of their teeth.  I am going with the Rangers by three in a barn burner.

Harrisburg (1-2) at West Frankfort (1-1)

Harrisburg is coming off of a 1-2 week at the Ernie Bozarth Classic in Murphysboro.  The Redbirds were defeated at Eldorado last Tuesday night by twelve points, in which the Eagles seemed to dominate.  Tonight, both teams open SIRR Ohio play.

Blake Drue might be out for the season for the Bulldogs, but Coach Randy Smithpeters has a lot of role players that are back from last year.  At the top of the list is 6’ 3” junior Isaiah Saulsbury.

This is one of those games that you don’t really know what to expect.  What I do not see is the Redbirds having an answer to shut down Salusbury.  I am going with Harrisburg by five.  I hope that when I make the walk home from Max Morris gym, I will be wrong, talking about a Redbird victory.

Chester (5-1)(0-1) at Sesser-Valier (1-4)(0-0)

Earlier in the week I would have said Yellow Jackets by 20.  The questions I have, Is Vienna that good, Did Chester overlook them, or do they miss Dylan Schwartz that bad?

Chester losing Wednesday night still has me shaking my head.  The Devils might have got blown out at Okawville Tuesday night, but was far from being embarrassed up there.

I am going Chester by 10.  This is one of those match-ups that peaks my curiosity and I am looking forward to seeing how it turns out.

Zeigler-Royalton (1-3)(0-0) at Vienna (5-1)(1-0)

As I said earlier, I am still shaking my head about the Eagles making the long road trip and beating Chester Wednesday night.

I am afraid it is going to be a long night for the Tornadoes down at the Eagles Nest.  If Z-R gets hot from the outside, and Vienna overlooks them, the Tornadoes might be able to stay around or spring the upset.

I have to go with Vienna by 20.

Thompsonville (3-3) at Webber Township (4-1)

This is a rematch in the opening round of the Christopher Thanksgiving Tournament where Webber defeated T’ville 62-56.

I am just going to say this.  If Tigers play tonight like they did Tuesday night down at Carrier Mills, the Trojans will blow them out.  If they have showings like they did when they have played NCOE this year, it might be a good ball game; and Thompsonville might leave Bluford with a win tonight.

I have to go with the law of averages.  I have to go with Webber by eight, especially at home.

Several Franklin County former basketball players recognized on RLC Alumni Weekend

One thing in this picture, I noticed there are a lot of coaches and some officials in the picture.  Nearly every Franklin County High school had alumnus  who attended the event.  I wonder if Ron Stanart sang the National Anthem before the Warriors’ Game?
