My insights on the Redbirds win over Harrisburg Friday night

by Steve Dunford

HARRISBURG, IL –  If Channel 3 would have still been shooting video Friday night, Darren Kinnard would have a Deuce and the Abuse to talk about on Sports Extra.

The three sacks by the West Frankfort defense of Bulldog QB Isaac Crabb. the third resulting in a Redbird safety, put a few exclamation points on a 37-24 win against the Harrisburg Bulldogs at Taylor Field Friday night.

The writers in the Southern Illinoisan picked Harrisburg to win.  In my preview, I picked the Bulldogs.  I used to do a little prognosticating in the past, and was told I pick with my heart and on my sleeve instead of my head.  It was a struggle, but I used my head on this one.

I did not get to talk to coach Berry after the game.  I will e-mail him either tomorrow or Wednesday.  I would be less intimidated approaching him than Kevin Toney.  I already found out what he has to say in those situations.   I am still not the level on previewing girls basketball yet, but from Matt Hampleman it would have been one of the lectures I’ve had for over 30 years starting with “little Stevie.”

Everyone knows that I am a film junkie.  I am not saying this to be cocky, but I do my homework as much as possible.  I reach out to the other teams coaches in my previews.

When I saw the linebacker corps of Jordan Bartok and company on film in week one against Mt. Carmel, being the Redbirds being a mainly run team, I thought the Harrisburg defense would give the Birds trouble.

When Connor Eaton on the second drive of the game broke out for 11 yards on the first play of the drive, then run it in for a 56 yard touchdown on the third play, at that point I began to say it is a winnable game.

After Harrisburg took a 14-7 lead late in the first quarter the Redbird defense took over.  One Bulldog drive is was Blake Engler, the other it was Ben Souders who was double digits in tackels.   I know Madison Allen ran for 215 yards against Pinckneyville but he was dominant defensively, which I had him for 13 tackles to lead the way, and rushing well over 100 yards.

T.J.  Vanzant and Brendan Johnson came up big in the second half.  Kyle Hammers and Sam Cooksey had great games on both sides of the ball.  Brock Johnson came up big defensively as well.  I had Bricen Forgatch with four tackles, with three coming on special teams.  I don’t want to leave anyone out, but a lot of kids had career games.

I was hearing rumblings starting with my trip to Casey’s before I left for Saline County,  that defensive coordinator Ryan Patton had the Birds fired up.

One of the things about being part of the media now is some of the great people you get to meet.  One is Sherman Owens, the voice of the Harrisburg Bulldogs on WEBQ.

One thing that I have learned, especially football games, is to be in earshot of one of the broadcasters or both.  When the Redbirds had it in the bag, I heard Sherman say something like this, “Berry and West Frankfort running the same thing, did it to us two years in a row.”

He made sure I noticed his Cub hat and let me have it because the Cardinals lost that afternoon.  After the game when he went to a commercial, I told him one Redbird team evened the score.

Harrisburg falls to 2-2 on the season, and is on the road next Friday night to take on the Massac County Patriots.

I am going to try to find out the condition of Bartok and Hunter Smith over the next couple of days.  I had a sick feeling in my stomach when Bartok went down.  He is being looked at by some D-1 and what used to be 1-AA schools.  I hope he recovers soon.

The Redbirds improve to 3-1 on the afternoon, and it is the Turkey game against the Benton Rangers at high noon.  It is going to be a hotly contested game, as well as being hot and humid.

I will feature all the cheerleaders in each preview throughout the year. (Thank you Amy Johnson for the use of the picture)

The West Frankfort Redbirds open Ohio division play tonight against the Harrisburg Bulldogs.

The Redbirds were on the road last week and beat Sparta, 33-16.  The Bulldogs picked up their second win of the season, 21-14 over Boonville, IN.  It was their second win in three weeks from a team from the Big 8 Conference, which is made up of Indiana schools except Mt. Carmel.

Here is what West Frankfort Coach Brian Beery had to say about the Bulldogs coming into tonight’s matchup, “Harrisburg is a very good football team. They have depth, and some very good running backs. Defensively we will have to contain speed backs, and stop #44 (Jordan Bartok)  in the middle. I expect this to be a very physical game, and the team that is the most physical will win, plain and simple.”

I spoke to new Harrisburg Coach Gabe Angelly had to say about facing the Redbirds tonight.  He is a long time assistant that took over after long-time Harrisburg Coach Al Way ended his third tour of duty with the Bulldogs.  He said, “(West Frankfort QB) Connor Eaton is a tough kid, and creates a lot of opportunities for them. We will have to play well to contain him.

He also said with Bartok, that Hunter Smith and Carl Russ are their biggest threats in the backfield.  He also mentioned how Chandler Bowling and Hunter Jackson has stepped up on the defensive end.   He also said that two sophomores, QB Isaac Crabb and RB Carl Russ are maturing more every game.

I watched film this week from Harrisburg’s week one game with Mt. Carmel.  The Bulldogs have four very good linebackers in Jackson, Bartok, Kent Cletcher, and Presley Gauch.  This might cause the Redbirds some problems tonight with their running game.

I know there could be some changes since week one, but Mt. Carmel had a tough time on the ground, but when they went to the air in the second half, that could be the weak link.

Eaton has been hooking up more and more with WR’s Kyle Hammers and Mason Clay.  For the Redbirds to stay with the ball game, they will have to throw the football.

The win over Harrisburg last year was a turn around to the program for the Redbirds.  I expect a very close hard fought game.  I am going to be rooting hard for WF tonight, but I have to go with the Bulldogs at home by seven.

Redbirds move to 2-1 on the season with a 33-16 victory over Sparta Friday night

by Steve Dunford

SPARTA, IL – Last year  running the quarterback keeper/fake, either QB Brandon Beery, FB Logan Tomanovich or both would pile up a lot of yards on the ground.  This season it is QB Connor Eaton and RB/FB Madison Allen.   The duo, as well as some stingy Redbird defense, left Randolph County with a 33-16 victory Friday night over the Sparta Bulldogs.

Sparta stated the game with a six play drive and the Redbirds took over on downs.  The get on the board with a ten play grinding drive at the 4:46 mark in the first, as Eaton scored on a 15 yard touchdown run.  The extra point failed as it was 6-0 West Frankfort.

On the third play of the Sparta drive, Kyle Hammers picked off a Kijah Banda pass.  The Redbirds get inside their own ten, but could not punch it in, Sparta takes over on downs.

On the next possession, the Bulldogs were three and out, forcing to punt into their own end zone.  WF takes over at the Sparta 28.  On the first play of the drive Connor Eaton runs it in and the Redbirds go up 12-0, at the 9:14 mark of the first half.

On the first play of the Bulldog drive, Madison Allen strips the ball and gives it right back to West Frankfort.  The Redbirds are four and out as the Sparta defense has a fourth down stop.

Sparta then has a ten play drive and the Redbirds hold them on 4th down, with a minute and some change in the first half.  WF lets the clock run out and both teams go to the locker room with it still 12-0 West Frankfort.

The Redbirds won the coin toss at the start of the game and they deferred.   A nice kickoff return by Kyle Hammers give the Redbirds field position near the 50.  WF was knocking on the door again as they were deep into Bulldog territory.  A series of penalties brought the Redbirds nearly back to where they started.

Facing a third and 24, at the 41 yard line, Connor Eaton throws a perfect strike to WR Mason Clay for the touchdown.  The extra point failed.  With eight minutes and some change on the clock in the third quarter, West Frankfort was up 18-0.

Sam Cooksey picks off the second play of the next Sparta drive.  The Redbirds were three and out.

Junior QB Kijah Banda puts the Bulldogs on his shoulders and in this drive picks up a big chunk of the 129 yards rushing he had on the night.  Sparta puts together a very long 12 possession drive, and Banda runs it in for a one yard TB.  He then hits Tony Williams for  the two point conversion to make it 18-8 West Frankfort with 9:53 to go in the game.

The Bulldogs then try an on side kick.  Sparta touches it then Brock Johnson recovers.  I breathed a big sigh of relief because it looked to me there was a Redbird hand on it before Sparta deflected it.

After the onside kick Eaton finds Hammers for a 39 yard pass on the third play of the drive. On the next play Allen runs it in from 16 and runs in the two point conversion as well to make the Score 26-8 West Frankfort with 7:45 left to go.

After a five play Sparta drive which featured a 39 yard run by Banda, West Frankfort takes over on downs.  On the fifth play of the WF drive, Eaton scores his third touchdown of the night from the ten, Cooksey kicks the extra point to make it 33-8 West Frankfort with 3:38 to go.

Sparta then goes to Carlos Keen at QB.  The go on an air assault.  Keen finds Oyston Connors in the end zone in the final few ticks of the game.  The two point conversion was good, for a 33-16 final.

West Frankfort improves to 2-1 on the season and opens SIRR Ohio Division play Friday night on the road facing the Harrisburg Bulldogs, who were 21-14 winners over Boonville, IN last Friday night.

Sparta falls to 0-3 on the season and will open Mississippi Division play facing the Pinckneyville Panthers, who were whipped by the Benton Rangers 41-0 last Friday night.  Sparta has dropped 16 consecutive games spanning over the last three seasons.  I can see the losing streak possibly ending on the turf at Pinckneyville.

Week 3 Preview: West Frankfort 1-1 at Sparta 0-2

by Steve Dunford

The two SIRR Ohio schools in the county flip Mississippi opponents this week as West Frankfort (1-1) travels to Sparta (0-2) and Pinckneyville (0-2) travels to Benton (1-1).

The Redbirds, led by 213 yards on the ground by RB Madison Allen , and QB Connor Eaton with 154 yards rushing as the Redbirds defeated the Pinckneyville Panthers 36-14.

Here is Coach Brian Berry’s thoughts on the Pinckneyville game. “ I felt the defense played much better (our first team defense was not scored on) this game. I believe there is still room to get better, but we did take a step in the right direction.

Offensively, we played a better game having fewer fumbles, however we still have work to do in this area as we continue our ball security drills this week. All the running backs had a good game, but because Allen had no fumbles for the game, he got more carries during the second half than the other running backs.”  (The box score for the Pinckneyville game will be at the end of the story.)

Sparta is coming off of a 29-13 loss to the Benton Rangers last Friday night.  One thing that is noted is the Sparta defense, held the Benton offense scoreless in the second half.  Here is coach Beery’s thoughts about going into Friday night’s game with Sparta,  “Sparta is a very athletic team. They have the ability to take it to the house on any given play due to their athleticism. We must contain their speed, while continuing to improve on our pass coverage (there was a few time Pinckneyville caught us misaligned last week). Offensively, we MUST take care of the ball, continue to improve our run game, and do a better job finding a balance in our passing game.

I also spoke with Sparta coach Rob Kirk. First he has a few things to say about his team’s Week Two loss to Benton,   It had been a 14 game streak that was broken holding Benton scoreless in the second half. “Benton is a playoff caliber team, with a potential All State QB in Hamilton Page, so we were glad to see our pass defense finally pick up after so many years of developing better DB’s. We matched up well with Benton, and it was fun being apart of a competitive game again. A couple years ago we were the top defense for the first six weeks and with some key injuries and seniors who graduated we had to pull up young players who didn’t have the time to develop at the JV level and were brought straight up to varsity.”

About his team’s upcoming matchup with West Frankfort Friday night, he said,  “We are close to becoming a winning program again and we will have a big test vs. WF. We expect them as always to be big and physical and Coach Beery is always good at having some tricks up his sleeves.”

“Offensively we are controlling the ball better and earning first downs which only helps our defense. We have had some key injuries on our offensive line but they should be back by Pinckneyville or Nashville. We have had some success running the ball (Jonathan Williams, Ethan Evans, Seth Berry, Clayton Sheldon) and throwing the ball (Ostyn Connors, Kerry Harris, Nate Meierotto, Carlos Keen).”

“Our QB is a returning starter and a junior this year and is really doing a great job running the offense, while going both ways at Linebacker. We finally are playing as a team, we feel as though every week we have the most talent on the field and when they play as a team we will be hard to beat. After an 0-9 season, Sparta football is starting to build some loyalty in its program again, were looking forward to picking up a win and ending the 14 Game losing streak.”

WEST FRANKFORT, IL (Amanda Jarzynski, DuQuoin Call.  Please click on the link above for the full story.  Here is an excerpt below.)

Panthers’ senior Tyler Rice came up big in his team’s 36-14 loss Friday night to the West Frankfort Redbirds. The wide receiver, who also plays linebacker for the Pinckneyville squad, stripped the football from the Redbirds’ quarterback Connor Eaton, scooped up the loose ball and sprinted 90 yards for the touchdown.

This put the Panthers on the board in the second quarter, but West Frankfort still led 12-7.

The Redbirds clicked for 469 rushing yards as Madison Allen led the way with 213 and three touchdowns. Eaton followed with 168 rushing yards.

Southern Illinois High School Scoreboard: WF Redbirds-Team of the week.

The Redbirds in the final three minutes of halftime, getting ready to put together an impressive second half. Thank you Caryn Novak for letting me use your pictures.

There is not any upsets tonight.  I have to give the team of the week to the West Frankfort Redbirds.  I thought it would be a low scoring tight game.  Michael Marlo did an outstanding job brining it to me tonight.  I wish I was there .

There will be another homer pick tomorrow on Sportsvoice.  I look for Mike Murphy and Scott Hudson to give the Herrin Tigers the team of the week.  It is well deserved.

S-V-W-W makes the long trip to Albion tonight, pulled off another impressive win against the Edwards County Lions.  They were last weeks team of the week, they deserve some special mention.

A-J executes thier game plan, defeat the WF Redbirds in opener

by Steve Dunford

WEST FRANKFORT, IL –  Both coaches, Brett Detering, of Anna-Jonesboro and Brian Beery of West Frankfort told both teams in practice on Thursday, what they needed to do to pick up a victory last night.

Detering said they needed to pick up more yards on the ground, as the Redbirds held them to 56 in Week 1 down at Anna last year.  Beery said they needed to limit turnovers and penalties.

A-J rushed for 257 yards last night, WF coughed up the ball five times, three in the first quarter.  Wildcat running back Jayce Turner ran wild for the Wildcats, as I had him picking up 196 yards on the night.  (My good friend Moury Bass, the voice of the Anna-Jonesboro Wildcats on WIBH, had him for an even 200).

Turner scored three touchdowns, and came up with some key tackles playing in the A-J secondary, as he led them to a 43-18 victory over the Redbirds last night at Johnson Field.

A-J wins the coin toss and elects to receive in the second half.  West Frankfort starts at their own 27,  Madison Allen has a 14 yard run on the first play of the game to get the ball close to the 50,  Two plays later, sophomore QB Connor Eaton was picked off at the Wildcat 43 yard line at the 9:44 mark.

A-J gets on the board at the 5:58 mark of the first quarter,  on the first of three touchdowns by Turner, on a nine play drive that Turner had his number called a lot on that drive.  The extra point was good and the score was 7-0.

The Redbirds take over at their own 28.  On the second play from scrimmage, Brendan Johnson breaks loose and has the ball stripped deep in the A-J red zone.  The ball rolls in the end zone, and the Wildcats get a touchback.

Both teams swap possessions quickly as A-J was three and out, and the Redbirds fumble and give the ball right back.

The Wildcats play their signature grinding smash mouth as I call it, football, in an 11 play, six minute drive.  Quarterback Bryce Osman scores on a two-yard quarterback keeper.  The extra-point was good, and the score was 14-0, A-J at the 9:28 mark of the second quarter.

West Frankfort is three and out, and Arieh Hart, comes up with a 35 yard punt return, to give Anna-Jonesboro very good field position.    They punch it in on a two yard run by Turner, his second touchdown of the night.  They miss the extra point, and it was 20-0 Wildcats at  the 6:16 mark of the second quarter.

The Redbirds give it right back to A-J on a six play drive near mid-field.  The Wildcats score again at the 1:15 mark of the first half with Osman running another QB sneak.  Hart picks up the two point conversion, and it was 28-0, Anna-Jonesboro.

I was thinking the game would see a running clock toward the end, and with the 7:30 p.m. start, it might be over before a lot of the other games across Southern Illinois that started at 7:00 p.m.

Things became a little interesting in the last few seconds of the first half.  Kyle Hammers, has a 75 yard kick return for a touchdown.  The extra point was blocked, which the score was 28-6, Wildcats.

Anna-Jonesboro fumbles the kickoff and the Redbirds take over around the A-J 40.  The Redbirds go to the air and Eaton finds Sam Cooksey for a 17 yard pass.  He finds Kyle Hammers in the end zone after two incomplete passes.  The two point conversion failed as the score was 28-12, Wildcats.

Brendan Johnson kicks an on side kick successfully.  Eaton hits Kyle Hammers with a 35 yard pass.  Eaton then takes two more shots at the end zone before the horn sounds and both passes were deflected in the end zone.  It still remains 28-12 at the half.

On the opening drive of the second half, Turner marches the ball down the field.  A-J is faced with a third and long.  The Wildcats run the Wildcat with wide out Dalton Goddard finds Damien Crisp in the end zone for a 28 yard touchdown pass.  The two-point conversion was good, to make the score 36-12, Anna-Jonesboro at the 8:00 minute mark of the third quarter.

The teams then trade fumbles and the Redbirds have a seven play drive in which they had to punt.

Turner gets his third and final TD of the night on a three yard run completing a nine yard drive.  The drive was highlighted by a 30 yard pass from Ozamn to Kyle McMahan.  The extra point was good and the score is 43-12, with 8:04 left in the third.

The Redbirds really looked sharp on a 12 possession drive, as Madison Allen scores on a five yard run.  The extra point was blocked.  AJ runs out the last two minutes.  As the final was 43-18.

Anna-Jonesboro (1-0) hosts Murphysboro (0-1) Friday night.  The Redbirds (0-1) will play the Pinckneyville Panthers (0-1) on Friday night as well.

HS Football Week 1 Scoreboard: S-V-W-W pulls big upset at Carmi-White County

by Steve Dunford

I am going to give an upset of the week.  Congratulations to coach John Shadowens and the Sesser-Vailer-Waltonville-Woodlawn Red Devils for defeating the Carmi-White County Bulldogs on the road 27-12.  This is my upset of the week.

I had to go with the Franklin County School, however I think it is notable the Harrisburg Bulldogs went to the pit in Mt. Carmel and defeated the Purple Aces 17-14 tonight.
