Z-R-C defeats West Frankfort 7-4 in a battle of cross county rivals

by Steve Dunford

WEST FRAKNFORT, IL –  The story of the afternoon was the battle of the bullpens.  Freshman Gabriel Motsinger came on in relief in the top of the fifth, pitching three scoreless innings to pick up the save for starter Nick Hale for the Tornadoes.

For the Redbirds, Tyson Broy pitched 5 1/3 innings only giving up one earned run.  West Frankfort starter Zach Lindsey had some hard luck behind him, only lasting 1 2/3 innings, giving up five runs and one of them earned.

The Redbirds defense on the afternoon was shoddy with seven errors.

I asked both coaches about the effort they got out of their bullpens.  Tornado coach Page Kirkpatrick said, “Motsinger got the ground balls when we needed them or a big strikeout, as he fanned three.

West Frankfort coach Michael Warren said, “Broy picked us up and gave us a chance. Lindsey did not have his best stuff, but he was decent.  The defense behind him let him down.  When you spot a good HS team four runs, it is tough to come back.”

Z-R-C scored two in the top of the first.  Gabe Schimpf singles over SS Bryson Dorris head. Kaeleb Pedigo beats out an infield single.  Steven Anderson and Bryce Pratt have RBI singles.  The Redbirds go down in order.

In the top of the second Dalton Carpenter reaches with a bloop single. Jason Cole reaches on a fielders choice and ends up aboard with an error.  Hale tries to sacrifice and it fails as a good play by Lindsey to gun Carpenter down at third.  Pedigo picks up another RBI single scoring Cole.  Anderson then has an RBI base hit scoring courtesy runner Cam Newton.  Shane McKowen picks up a base hit.  Warren then brings Broy into the game and Bryce Pratt grounds out.  The score is 5-0

West Frankfort makes some noise in the bottom of the inning.  Lindsey reaches on an error. Jaryd Clark and Dorris follow with base hits. Brendan Russel draws a walk and an RBI.  Brandon Glass grounds into a double play.  The Redbirds had bases loaded and no one out and only scored one, which makes it 5-1 after two.

Both teams go down in order in the third.

In the top of the fourth, Shimpf picks up a one out single and steals second, and ends the inning stranded at third.

In the bottom of the inning Logan Elko singles.  Jaryd Clark hits a one out double.  Dorris reaches on a two base error scoring Elko and Clark.  Tornado shortstop Luke Garver robs Brendan Russell of a double on a screaming line drive.  Glass strikes out

Z-R-C goes down quietly in the top of the fifth.  WF makes some noise though as they have bases loaded with no one out with a pair of singles from Lucas Wolfe and Peyton Overturf.  Elko Ks.  Lindsey grounds into a fielders choice scoring Wolfe.  Jared Clark pins Schimpf up against the warning track.  Motsinger put out the Redbird fire as he came in with two on no one out.  After five West Frankfort cuts into the lead 5-4

In the top of the sixth, Cole legs out an IF single.  Motsinger drops down a perfect SAC bunt.  Schimpf gets a base hit to center and Glass throws a perfect strike to 2B Jacob Russell who entered the game in the second when Broy took the mound to gun down Schimp.  He drives in Cole.  Pedigo flies out to right.

In the bottom  of the sixth, Dorris opens with a single.  B. Russell grounds into a fielder choice as 2B Kaeleb Pedigo with a diving stop flips to SS Luke Garver  for the force out.  Motsinger fans two in a row as it is 6-4 Z-R-C after six.

In the top of the seventh, Anderson reaches with a single. he swipes second and third.  An overthrow by Peyton Overturf brings Anderson into score.  The Tornadoes go down quietly then.

In the bottom of the seventh a diving catch by CF Gabe Schimpf robs Tyson Dorris of at least a double.  Overturf gets on with a base hit and Elko grounds into a double play for a 7-4 final.

The Tornadoes improve to 14-4 on the year.  Coach Kirkpatrick said “When you beat a quality opponent out of the Black Diamond on the road it is huge for us.  He went on to say that other than beating 1A defending State Champion Goreville, it is their biggest win of the year.”

The Tornadoes go on the road to face the Vienna Eagles tomorrow afternoon, who they won a 2-1 extra inning thriller at home Tuesday in BDC play.

The Redbirds fall to 5-6.  They will play the Herrin Tigers on the road tomorrow in SIRR OHIO play, weather permitting for both games as the forecast looks unfavorable.

BENTON, IL (Amanda Jarzynski, Benton Evening News. Please Click to read the full story. Here is an excerpt) While the Rangers did their work against the Redbirds on the baseball diamond, the Benton Rangerettes also challenged the Redbirds on the softball diamond in Benton Park. After not having played in a week due to inclement weather, the Rangerettes were challenged, but came out with a 10-2 victory over their Franklin County foes. “It really felt like we haven’t played in a week… there were times in the game when it showed,” said Ryan Miller, Rangerettes’ coach. “We played a little rusty… we hit the ball pretty well for the most part. We’re going out there and putting the ball in play which is something I’m really happy about. We’re putting pressure on the defense and we’re playing good defense ourselves.”

They also cheered for their head coach Brett Blondi who reached his 200th coaching career victory. “It’s nice. Better than losing 200, I guess,” Blondi said after the win. “We’ve been so lucky to have such good kids and support from the community, parents, administration and teachers. It’s a really nice place to coach and call home.” Blondi gave full credit of his accomplishment to the young athletes on the Rangers’ roster. “These guys are such good guys,” he said. “They pick each other up. They play with a level of maturity that I’m not used to. The guys in the past would tense up a little, but these guys play with confidence that if they make a mistake they can come back and win.”

Kevin Toney salutes his seniors

Senior Night at FCHS against Pinckneyville (Richard Sitler-Southern Illinoisan photo)

There have been several senior classes that has been featured. West Frankfort boys high school basketball coach Kevin Toney sent me some words about his seniors a week or so after the season.  Here are his words unfiltered.

Since I have lived in West Frankfort the last year and a half, I have crossed paths with these young men in several circles.  It was an honor to watch them play the last two seasons.- sd

Noah Allen:  For the last two years, Noah Allen has been a leader in every way possible. He was selected by his teammates as the hardest worker on the team. That’s quite an honor. He was a young man who always expected the absolute best from himself and would not be satisfied with anything less. He has been an absolute joy to coach. Noah will be a success in any field he chooses.

Jaryd Clark:  Jaryd is a three-sport athlete that brought a lot to the team. His dedication, intelligence, and cooperative nature were necessary elements for this team and how Jaryd played was the epitome of team play. His younger teammates could watch Jaryd use him as a role model for so many important things. I look forward to watching Jaryd’s contributions as he enters into adulthood.

Scotty Clinton:  Scotty is an exceptional athlete who is quicker than some might expect and then also stronger than he may appear. Those attributes allowed Scotty to surprise some defenders. He also was eager to play a physical type of game without regard to the size of the opponent. Everyone could admire his willingness to play that type of physical game especially with a recurring shoulder injury. It was great to get to know Scotty this season.

Austin Glodich:  Austin has improved tremendously in the last two years. Extremely athletic for his size, he has the capability to rebound it on the defensive end, put it on the floor in transition, and then dunk at the offensive end. Those are not Austin’s strongest attributes, however. What will benefit Austin in the future is his ability to communicate and to easily converse with adults. We will miss his personality as well as his production.

Stanley Powell:  Stanley appreciated being on the team more than most high school young man and he never took that for granted. Stanley’s energy and hard work had a huge influence on all of us…daily. When it came time for Stanley to play, he did not merely want to play and to get a bucket, he always wanted to play WELL. He always wanted to be a great teammate and he certainly always was.

Ethan Riddle:  Ethan was able to give us many valuable minutes this season by being prepared and keeping a great attitude. His quickness and defensive grittiness are things that were obvious to all. He’s such a hard worker! His contributions were many and should not be overlooked. Ethan displayed a great attitude every day and will be successful in any endeavor he chooses. I look forward to watching Ethan progress as a young man.

DiAngelo Russell:  “D” moved to West Frankfort under difficult personal circumstances; however, his attitude and willingness to learn enabled him to make the team and his personality endeared him to his teammates. Always asking questions during practice and listening intently to others, DiAngelo was certainly able to learn, not just about our basketball program, but he also learned a lot about high school athletics. Planning on joining the military, I hope the lessons “D” learned will carry him to a successful career after high school.

Andrew Sturgill:  Andrew was the kind of blue-collar, hard-nosed defender that most folks would be glad pay money to watch him guard bigger opponents! I wish I had more Andrew Sturgills on the court. When it came time to determine our defensive match-ups, there was no one on our schedule that I hesitated asking Andrew to guard. No one. He matured physically a great deal in the past year. But it’s also obvious that Andrew was much more confident in his abilities when he was on the court. He will also be a young man who will contribute greatly to the entities with which he is involved.
