Sesser-Valier takes MWC championship

By Bruce A. Fasol

Rick Metcalf has always been known as a good basketball coach. He was a college assistant at Murray State University. As head boys varsity basketball coach at Sesser-Valier and Vienna he also achieved much success.

Some of that success came when he coached the Red Devil boys team to West Frankfort Mid-Winter Classic basketball titles in the 90’s. Now, Metcalf has become the answer to a trivia question. He is the first person to coach boys and girls teams to MWC titles.

The Lady Red Devils knocked off Herrin 61-54 Thursday night to win the 2013 crown. But, it was not easily accomplished. Sesser-Valier had to dig themselves out of a 15 point hole in the very first quarter. But, they didn’t panic and slowly cut the Lady Tiger lead. Rachel Marlo flipped the “on” switch in the second quarter scoring 15 points by herself in the frame to lead the come back. They not only caught the Tigers but passed them in that memorable frame. Marlo hit two 3-point shots in the final half minute to give Sesser-Valier a bucket lead at the break.

In the second half, Herrin fought back but could come no closer than 5 points. Abby Horn put the team on her back scoring 8 straight points at one juncture of the fourth quarter. However, SV held off the Lady Tigers for the championship.

BMS boys improve to 15-3 with win over West Frankfort

By Jim Muir

Derek Oxford and Austin Wills combined for 43 points and the Benton Middle School 8th grade boy’s basketball team rolled to its 11th straight win Thursday night, a 62-31 drubbing of cross-county rival West Frankfort.

The Junior Rangers jumped to an 18-7 first quarter lead and upped the advantage to 37-19 at halftime.  Still, BMS coach John Cook was not overly satisfied with his team’s play.

“Despite what the scoreboard said we weren’t happy with how we played, especially on the defensive end,” said Cook.  “We picked up some silly fouls from not being in our help positions and from trying to block shots.  That’s not the type of team we are, that needs to improve.”

Oxford tallied 28 points to go along with nine rebounds with Wills getting 15 points and four assists.  Tyson Houghland also notched double figures with 12 points and eight rebounds.

After some halftime adjustments Cook said he was pleased with this team’s second half play.

“The second half was much better in terms of playing a tight solid defense and checking off the glass,” he said. “We had some nice possessions on offense where we got pints off of our execution rather than off one pass and a shot.”

Despite winning 11 straight and improving to 15-3 overall Cook said he and his players were not “totally satisfied” with the win.

“We won so I am not disappointed and 10 games ago I would have probably been thrilled with a win like this,” said Cook.  “But, I don’t think anyone on our side was satisfied tonight, which is a good thing.  For us it’s not always about the scoreboard.  Our goal is to get better every game, we like that approach.”

Rounding out the scoring for Benton, Brett Bonenberger had three points, Parker Williams scored two points and Gehrig win had one point.  Also seeing action in the game was Oliver Davis, Blane Pankey, Scott Mosely, Jordan Richey, Hamilton Page, Troy Tillman and Jourdan Garbo.

In the preliminary contest Blane Pankey led the way for Benton with 10 points as the BMS 7th grade squad improved to 12-4 with a 40-24 victory over West Frankfort.

The 7th grade squad, coached by Andy Davis, rolled out to a 10-4 first quarter score and then put the game away in the second frame by outscoring the Redbirds 15-1 to open up a 25-5 halftime advantage.

Hamilton Page narrowly missed double figures with 9 points and he was followed by Brett Bonenberger with seven points, Gehrig Wynn with six points, Parker Williams with four points and Mason Wills and Drew Owens with two points each.  Also seeing action for Benton was Eldon Owens, Joey Craig, Parker McGuire, Triston Summers, Robbie Moore, Braxton Lutz, Ethan Kreiger, Avery Potter, Branden Luster, Peyton Mosley, Logan Darr and Jordan Bowlin.

Both BMS squads are back in action on Tuesday Jan. 22 when they travel to Marion.

BMS 8th grade team wins 10th in a row, defeat Herrin 47-40

By Jim Muir

The Benton Middle School Junior Rangers picked up a big road win Tuesday night defeating Herrin 47-40.

The victory, the 10th in a row for Coach John Cook’s squad avenges an early season loss to Herrin and improved the 8th grade team’s overall record to 14-3. The Junior Rangers played Herrin to an 8-8 tie a the end of the first quarter but fell behind 20-19 at the intermission.

“I was a little disappointed at halftime because of the mental mistakes we were making at both ends of the floor,” said Cook. “We has some mis-communications on what defense we were in and we weren’t balancing the floor very well on the offensive end against their 3-2 zone defense.”

Benton pulled even again at the end of three quarters and then road the hot hand of Derek Oxford to outscore Herrin 19-12 in the fourth to pick up the victory. Oxford recorded a double-double with 26 points and 10 rebounds.

“I have been impressed with the character we have shown the past couple of games,” said Cook. “Last week we overcame a 12-point deficit at Carbondale to beat them. And we ground it out at the end to get this win. It is never easy to beat Herrin at their place. Their size really creates some match up problems for us, but we took care of the ball down the stretch and hit some big shots when we needed them most. Also, we went 13-16 from the free throw line for the night which was huge for us.”

Cook said the Junior Rangers have now beaten every team on their schedule except for Marion. Benton will get that chance on Jan. 22 when the two teams meet at Marion.

Along with Oxford’s 26 Benton also got 10 points from Austin Wills while Blane Pankey added four points, Oliver Davis and Gehrig Wynn had three points each and Tyson Houghland had one point.

In the preliminary contest Parker Williams hit the winning 3-pointer to give Benton a 38-35 win over the Herrin 7th grade team.

Williams heroics was the exclamation point on a terrific comeback by Coach Andy Davis’ team which trailed virtually the entire game. Benton trailed 11-2 at the end of the first quarter and trailed 21-10 at halftime. Benton outscored Herrin 12-11 in the third quarter but still trailed by double digits – 32-22 heading to the final frame.

The Benton squad held Herrin to only three points in the third quarter outscoring their hosts 16-3 in the final frame to pull out the exciting victory and improve to 12-3 overall.

Williams led Benton with 14 points followed by Gehrig Wynn with eight points, Hamilton Page with seven points, Brett Bonenberger with six points and 10 rebounds, Bland Pankey with two points and Drew Owens with one point. Mason Wills and Eldon Owens also saw action for Benton.

Both BMS squads are back in action on Thursday, Jan. 17 when Franklin County rival West Frankfort comes to town.

BMS boys pick up big road win at Carbondale

By Jim Muir

Derek Oxford scored 28 points and the Benton Middle School Junior Rangers overcame a 12-point first quarter deficit en route to a gutsy 58-41 road victory Thursday night against always-tough Carbondale.

“Last night was the slowest start we have had all year and on top of that Carbondale is very athletic and their ball-defense created a lot of problems for us early,” said BMS coach John Cook. “Before we knew it we were down 13-1 and we hadn’t even gotten into our offense yet.”

The 8th grade squad closed the first quarter strong but still trailed 20-10 at the end of the first stanza. It was all Benton in the second frame as the Junior Rangers outscored Carbondale 20-8 to to turn the 10-point first quarter deficit into a 30-28 halftime lead.

Cook said Oxford, who has started on the 8th grade team since he was in sixth grade, “took the game over” when his team fell behind early.

“Derek really put us on his back in the first half,” said Cook. “We went to a straight motion offense and set a lot of high ball screens in order to free up our guards and relieve them of some of that pressure. We did a great job of keeping the floor balanced and really attacking the goal.”

While Oxford tallied 28 and barely missed a double-double with nine rebounds Cook said it was a “real team effort” that secured the road win.

“We had a pretty good idea of what Carbondale was doing offensively in the second and half and we held them to only 13 points,” said Cook. “Austin Wills really handled the ball well and Tyson Houghland had his biggest night of the season. We played excellent team defense and got a lot of good minutes from Oliver Davis, Gehrig Wynn, Blane Pankey and Jordan Richey.”

Houghland netted 18 – his high mark of the season – to go with six rebounds. Also scoring for Benton was Pankey with seven points and two rebounds, Wills with three points and two rebounds and Oliver Davis with two points and three rebounds. Also seeing action for Benton was Wynn and Richey.

The Junior Rangers shot 48 percent from the field (19-39) and hit 5-13 three-pointers with Oxford hitting four shots from beyond the arc. The Junior Rangers also shot 15-20 from the charity stripe for 75 percent.

The win improves the BMS 8th grade team’s overall record to 13-3.

In the 7th grade contest Carbondale broke open a close game with a big third quarter to take a 42-21 victory over the BMS squad.

Benton trailed 9-7 after one quarter and both teams scored 10 points in the second frame as Carbondale maintained a two-point lead at 19-17. Benton managed only four points in the second half and was outscored 10-2 in the third quarter and 13-2 in the final frame. The loss drops the 7th grade record to a still impressive 10-3 with two of the losses coming against Carbondale.

Hamilton Page, Gehrig Wynn and Eldon Owens led Benton in scoring with five points each followed by Brett Bonenberger with four points and Parker Williams with two points. Also seeing action for Benton was Blane Pankey, Drew Owens, Joey Craig, Mason Wills, Parker McGuire, Triston Summers, Robbie Moore, Braton Lutz, Ethan Kreiger, Peyton Mosely, Branden Luster and Jordan Bowlin.

Both BMS teams are back in action on Tuesday, Jan. 15 when they travel to Herrin. The game that was scheduled for Jan. 14 has been moved to Jan. 28 and that will also be 8th Grade Night.

Adeoye’s clutch free throws lift Vols to huge win on ‘Marion Night’

CARTERVILLE – It played out like a Hollywood script. Former Marion High School star Aaron Adeoye hit the game-winning free throws with two seconds left on the clock to lift John A. Logan College to a heart-stopping 72-71 win over Kaskaskia College Wednesday on “Marion Night” at the college.

A 6-foot-7 sophomore forward, Adeoye took a pass from freshman point guard Connor Wheeler (Du Quoin) and was fouled as he went up for a shot in the lane. One of Adeoye’s contacts was knocked out of his eye on the play. With play stopped, Wheeler scurried over to the bleachers and grabbed some solution from Adeoye’s mother. After a time out, the former Wildcat calmly knocked down both tosses. The ensuing ovation was deafening. A desperation half-court shot by the Blue Devils fell way short of the target and the Volunteers escaped with their most exciting win of the season, even bigger than the road win at Three Rivers, Mo. in November.

This was a game that Kaskaskia seemed to own. But Logan refused to surrender.

Trailing by 12 (68-56) with 6:19 remaining, the hometowners rallied. Wheeler stepped up with a couple of big outside shots. Adeoye worked his magic inside. Sondale Conner had a highlight-reel slam dunk. And James Williams tied the game with 44 seconds to play on a shot from beyond the arc from the left side.

With 11 seconds left, Kaskaskia’s Daquan Boyd was fouled and made one of two free throws for a 71-70 lead. That set the stage for Adeoye’s heroics.

“I just knew I had to make the free throws to win the game,” Adeoye said. “So, I took a deep breath and tried to hit them. Fortunately, they went in.”

Vols head coach Kyle Smithpeters was ecstatic with his team’s 16-3 run to close the game.

“We, the coaching staff, challenged our kids when we got down 12. We knew we had to get some stops and we needed a little luck along the way, too. I’m very happy for the kids. They didn’t fold. This win is a group effort all the way around.”

Adeoye led the Vols with 15 points and 10 rebounds. Wheeler followed with 13 points and dished out five assists. Williams tickled the twine for 12 points. Jay Johnson netted eight. Conner had seven. Herrin native Jamie Jones hit both shots he took and finished with five points and four rebounds. Kaylen Shane tacked on four points as did DeVaughn Johnson. Murphysboro’s Pierre House added two points.

Kaskaskia was paced by R.J. Kwiatkowski’s 24 points. The Centralia grad drained eight 3-pointers. No other Blue Devil reached double figures.

Now 3-1 in league play and 8-4 overall, the Vols travel to Olney Saturday night.

BMS Junior Rangers defeat Harrisburg

By Jim Muir

All basketball coaches will tell you that there are nights when the offense is just not as crisp and sharp as they would like but they will quickly add that defense should never have an off night.

That was the theme for the Benton Middle School 8th grade basketball team Tuesday night as they upped their season mark to 12-3 with a 61-31 home victory over Harrisburg.

“We were a little sloppy on the offensive end tonight,” said Junior Rangers coach John Cook. “But, we really played well on the defensive end. We always preach holding teams to under 40 points a night and have been able to do that in 12-of-15 games this year.”

The BMS squad jumped out to a 13-9 fist quarter lead and then outscored Harrisburg 17-5 in the second quarter to take a commanding 30-14 halftime lead.

Cook also credited a decisive advantage in rebounds as another key to the game.

“We out-rebounded them 43-25 so we didn’t give them second and third chances,” said Cook. “It was just another all-around good team win for us.”

Derek Oxford led Benton in scoring with 23 points and also grabbed nine rebounds despite being hampered by foul trouble. Austin Wills turned in a double-double with 10 points and 12 rebounds. Wills’ work on the boards drew high marks from his coach.

“Austin was struggling with his shot a little,” Cook said. “But, he stepped up big with six offensive and six defensive rebounds.”

Cook also pointed to “the little things” that added to the victory over the Bulldogs.

“Oliver Davis stepped up and defended their best player when Oxford and Wills were in foul trouble and held him to five points on the night,” said Cook. “Things like that sometimes go unnoticed, but people who know basketball know how important little things like that are.  Our kids understand it as well as anyone.”

Tyson Houghland continued to play well for Benton and also hit double figures with 11 points to go with four rebounds and two steals. Rounding out the scoring for Benton was Davis, Blane Pankey and Jordan Richey with three points and Hamilton Page, Brett Bonenberger and Tony Tillman with two each.  Also seeing action for Benton was Gehrig Wynn, Scott Mosely, Parker Williams and Jourdan Garbo.

The Benton 7th grade squad, coached by Andy Davis, was also victorious and improved to 10-2 overall with a 39-26 victory over Harrisburg.

Benton led 8-5 after the first quarter and extended the lead to 19-9 at halftime.

Brett Bonenberger led the way for Benton with 14 points and was followed by Drew Owens with six points, Parker Williams with five points, Hamilton Page, Blane Pankey and Gehrig Wynn with four each and Mason Wills with two points.  Also seeing action for the 7th grade team was Eldon Owens, Joey Craig and Robbie Moore.

Both BMS squads are back in action on Thursday, Jan. 10 when they travel to Carbondale.

BMS boys start 2013 with a pair of wins

By Jim Muir

The Benton Middle School eighth grade team got the 2013 portion of its schedule off to an excellent start with a 61-29 victory over Christopher.

The Junior Rangers showed no ill effects following a three week layoff through the Christmas holiday racing out to a 16-8 first quarter lead en route to a 32-11 halftime score.

BMS 8th grade coach John Cook said he was pleased with his teams’ performance after the 21-day holiday break.

“Going in I expected there to be a little rust and fatigue,” said Cook. “I saw some fatigue but not much rust. I thought we did an exceptional job on the defensive end holding Christopher to only three field goals in the first half. Our guards played tight on their three-point shooters and our big men did a great job of hedging and communicating on ball screens.

Cook pointed out that Christopher began the game in a triangle-and-two defense guarding Benton’s leading scorers Derek Oxford and Austin Wills man-to-man to slow their offensive output.

“I thought Tyson Houghland and Gehrig Wynn stepped up for us, combining for 17 first half points, and forced Christopher to go back to their base 2-3 zone defense in the second half,” said Cook. “I expect more teams to start playing gimmicks against us in the second half of the season but I also expect us to show teams that we aren’t a one or two-dimensional team. We have a lot of depth.”

The 8th grade team was paced in scoring by Oxford who scored 21 points and also led the team in rebounding with nine. Houghland also turned in a solid outing hitting double figures with 12 points. Rounding out the Benton scoring was Jordan Richey with six points, Austin Wills, Oliver Davis and Gehrig Wynn with five points each, Blane Pankey with three points, Scott Mosely and Troy Tillman with two each. Also seeing action in the 8th grade game was Hamilton Page, Jourdan Garbo, Parker Williams and Brett Bonenberger.

BMS was also victorious in the 7th grade game notching a 47-22 victory over the Bearcats. Benton jumped out to a 13-4 first quarter score and then outscored Christopher 15-5 in the second frame to take a 28-9 halftime lead. Benton upped the advantage to 37-12 after three quarter and coasted to the victory. Benton’s 7th grade team is now 9-2 overall with the win.

Brett Bonenberger led the way for coach Andy Davis’ team with 14 points followed closely by Blane Pankey who added 12. Also scoring for Benton was Drew Owens with six points, Triston Summers and Mason Wills with 4 each, Parker Williams with three, Hamilton Page and Parker McGuire with two each. Also seeing action in the 7th grade contest was Gehrig Wynn, Eldon Owens, Joey Craig, Robbie Moore, Braxton Lutz, Ethan Kreiger, Branden Luster, Peyton Mosely, Logan Darr and Jordan Bowlin.

Both BMS teams are back in action on Tuesday, Jan. 8 when they host Harrisburg. The 7th grade game begins at 5:30 p.m. with the varsity game following.
