The state House approved a measure Thursday that would dub October of this year as “Zombie Preparedness Month.” Despite the name, lawmakers aren’t actually gearing up for a real zombie apocalypse. The measure instead encourages people to learn more about natural disasters and ensure they have emergency supplies that could last up to 72 hours.

Illinois legislators are proposing to boost immigrant protections statewide in response to President Donald Trump’s executive orders on immigration, a move advocates say would essentially give the state “sanctuary” status. One proposal says schools, medical facilities and places of worship don’t have to give access to federal immigration authorities or local law enforcement working on their behalf. Another proposal would limit cooperation and communication between local police and immigration authorities.
Q&A: AFSCME starts vote on authorizing state employee strike
SPRINGFIELD (Doug Finke- Springfield Journal Register – Click to read the entire story – here is an excerpt) Members of the largest state employee union began voting Monday on whether to authorize a strike against the state that would be the first in the union’s history. & The vote — which will continue for at least the next three weeks — does not mean a strike will occur, but if it is approved, it would authorize the union’s bargaining committee to call a strike in the future. & Here are some questions and answers about the vote, which runs through Feb. 19. & Who can vote? “Every union member who is eligible to strike is eligible to vote,” said Anders Lindall, spokesman for the American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees Council 31. “We want everyone to vote.”
Lisa Madigan seeks to stop state workers’ pay until budget passed

Bruce Rauner approve a spending plan to end a more than 18-month budget stalemate. & The motion filed Thursday asks the St. Clair County Circuit Court to dissolve by Feb. 28 a preliminary injunction that allows for state workers to be paid during the budget impasse. American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees Council 31 spokesman Anders Lindall said the union was “shocked and extremely disappointed” by the filing. & “Despite all the chaos in state government in the past two years, the people of Illinois have been able to count on state employees being on the job to serve them,” Lindall said. “The last thing Illinois needs is the further instability that blocking state payroll could cause.”

Bruce Rauner’s state of the state address, lawmakers in Springfield say they’re making progress on resolving Illinois’ budget impasse. Senators in Springfield Tuesday said they’re working on the details of a proposed budget package that could end the impasse. They say the controversial sugary beverage tax that was originally included in the deal is now off the table, but they are looking at more changes and potential taxes that could help improve conditions around the state without burdening taxpayers.
