Former Hall of Fame basketball coach David Lee would tell his teams, “just win trips down the floor and the rest will take care of itself.” Coach Dan Dewerff may have given his team much the same advice Wednesday night.

The Redbirds held a short lead at two of the three quarter breaks going into the final frame. At times, the Redbirds cruised and held as much as a 13-point lead in the second half. However, a Joel Boulds three point shot was enough to send the Eagles into an overtime period at Max Morris gym.

It is then that the timely message of “winning trips” began to pay off. In the overtime, the Redbirds held Eldorado to three points total.

Tyler Deaton scored all three of those points. Meanwhile the Redbirds cobbled together some offense of their own, basically from the free-throw line. The only field goal scored was a Braxston Koehl bucket, and ensuing free throw. What did not show up in the box score was the fact that the Redbirds controlled the rebounding boards, limitting Eldorado to single shots in the extra period.

In the extra period, the Redbirds were 8 of 11 from the foul line as they wrapped up the victory.

With the win, the Redbirds are now 2-0 in pool play in the tournament. Saturday’s match-ups are determined by pool play and the Redbirds could move to the title game with a win Friday night. Friday’s 9 p.m. game is a match-up with Carterville. The winner will play for the championship against the winner of the other pool.

The Redbirds were led by sophomore Braxston Koehl with 17, and senior Trenton Easley with 14.   Eldorado was led by Joel Boulds’ 15 points.

Redbirds begin holiday tournament play in Eldorado

By BRUCE A. FASOL

The West Frankfort Redbirds begin play at 11:30 a.m. Friday in the Eldorado Holiday Tournament. The tournament was delayed one day by the blizzard. The schedule stays the same as it was bracketed, just that play days will be today, Saturday, and the tournament will conclude on New Year’s Eve.

In the first round, the Redbirds will play Fairfield. The Mules are the 8th seeded team in the tournament.

Like Dan Dewerff’s Redbirds, the Mules have a sub .500 record going into play. The game is viewed as a toss up by most observers. The Redbirds own one of their two wins on this floor, having beaten host Eldorado earlier in the season in a regular season match-up.

The winner of this game has a 3 p.m. appointment Saturday with probably top-seeded Harrisburg. The loser of the Harrisburg/Hardin County game will play the loser of the Redbird game in the consolation bracket on Saturday morning at 8:30am.

The Redbird game can be heard online at  www.wfschools.org.

Redbirds win on the road

By BRUCE A. FASOL
Have the West Frankfort Redbirds improved any this year? The answer is “yes”. Friday night the ‘Birds held a 9 point lead on the road, and could not hold it. Tuesday night their lead ballooned to 17 points, but again the opponents made a run at the Redbirds. This time, Dan Dewerff’s team stayed focused, and rebuilt their lead enroute to a 81-71 decision in Eldorado.
Playing some of their best basketball of the year, the Redbirds built on a lead after one quarter and went into the locker room with a 35-25 advantage.
Eldorado came out in quarter three a much more disciplined ball club That allowed them to cut into the Redbird lead. A pair of three point shots in the third and fourth quarter by Richard Graceffa  actually made it a three-point game in the final frame.
However, the Redbirds stayed poised. They ran a series of plays that ended in lay-ups, and trips to the free throw line. Nic Korolenko himself earned two old-fashioned three point plays with a bucket and a free throw twice down the stretch. The last triple trip down the court came with 2:38 remaining.
It was the incredible free throw clinic that Redbirds put on that iced the game for the visitors. In the fourth quarter alone, the Redbirds were of 16 of 19 from the charity line . Trent Easley sealed the win with a 15 of 16 performance in the game. In the fourth quarter alone, Easley hit all 12 free throws he attempted. Sophomore Braxton Koehl got his jumper to fall with consistency, and was an impressive 7 for 10 from the line, too.
The Redbird defense helped cause three key turnovers late in the game that kept Eldorado at arms length in the end. The turnovers came within a minute of each other beginning at the 2:01 mark of the fourth quarter.
West Frankfort was led in scoring with the 20 points of Braxton Koehl, 17 for Trenton Easley, 17 for Nic Korolenko, 8 for Gage Williams, 6 for Zack Fort, 4 Evan Keller, 3 for Drew Maller. Starter Christian Dunning was injured in the first half minute of the ballgame. His physical condition is being evaluated.
The junior varsity lost to Eldorado 54-28 and remain winless.
With the win, the Redbirds are 1-3 for the season. The ‘Birds are home Friday when they host Massac County in the Ohio Division opener for both teams. The JV game begins at 6 p.m.
